    Superfluidity of "dirty" indirect excitons and magnetoexcitons in two-dimensional trap

    The superfluid phase transition of bosons in a two-dimensional (2D) system with disorder and an external parabolic potential is studied. The theory is applied to experiments on indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells. The random field is allowed to be large compared to the dipole-dipole repulsion between excitons. The slope of the external parabolic trap is assumed to change slowly enough to apply the local density approximation (LDA) for the superfluid density, which allows us to calculate the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature Tc(n(r))T_{c}(n(r)) at each local point rr of the trap. The superfluid phase occurs around the center of the trap (r=0\mathbf{r}=0) with the normal phase outside this area. As temperature increases, the superfluid area shrinks and disappears at temperature Tc(n(r=0))T_{c}(n(r=0)). Disorder acts to deplete the condensate; the minimal total number of excitons for which superfluidity exists increases with disorder at fixed temperature. If the disorder is large enough, it can destroy the superfluid entirely. The effect of magnetic field is also calculated for the case of indirect excitons. In a strong magnetic field HH, the superfluid component decreases, primarily due to the change of the exciton effective mass.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    We model the generation of words with independent unequal probabilities of occurrence of letters. We prove that the probability p(r)p(r) of occurrence of words of rank rr has a power asymptotics. As distinct from the paper published earlier by B. Conrad and M. Mitzenmacher, we give a brief proof by elementary methods and obtain an explicit formula for the exponent of the power law.Comment: 4 page

    A two-dimensional, two-electron model atom in a laser pulse: exact treatment, single active electron-analysis, time-dependent density functional theory, classical calculations, and non-sequential ionization

    Owing to its numerical simplicity, a two-dimensional two-electron model atom, with each electron moving in one direction, is an ideal system to study non-perturbatively a fully correlated atom exposed to a laser field. Frequently made assumptions, such as the ``single active electron''- approach and calculational approximations, e.g. time dependent density functional theory or (semi-) classical techniques, can be tested. In this paper we examine the multiphoton short pulse-regime. We observe ``non-sequential'' ionization, i.e.\ double ionization at lower field strengths as expected from a sequential, single active electron-point of view. Since we find non-sequential ionization also in purely classical simulations, we are able to clarify the mechanism behind this effect in terms of single particle trajectories.     Splitting of Long-Wavelength Modes of the Fractional Quantum Hall Liquid at ν=1/3\nu=1/3

    Resonant inelastic light scattering experiments at ν=1/3\nu=1/3 reveal a novel splitting of the long wavelength modes in the low energy spectrum of quasiparticle excitations in the charge degree of freedom. We find a single peak at small wavevectors that splits into two distinct modes at larger wavevectors. The evidence of well-defined dispersive behavior at small wavevectors indicates a coherence of the quantum fluid in the micron length scale.     Ejection Energy of Photoelectrons in Strong Field Ionization

    We show that zero ejection energy of the photoelectrons is classically impossible for hydrogen-like ions, even when field ionization occurs adiabatically. To prove this we transform the basic equations to those describing two 2D anharmonic oscillators. The same method yields an alternative way to derive the anomalous critical field of hydrogen-like ions. The analytical results are confirmed and illustrated by numerical simulations.     Localization Length in Anderson Insulator with Kondo Impurities

    The localization length, ξ\xi, in a 2--dimensional Anderson insulator depends on the electron spin scattering rate by magnetic impurities, τs−1\tau_s^{-1}. For antiferromagnetic sign of the exchange, %constant, the time τs\tau_s is {\em itself a function of ξ\xi}, due to the Kondo correlations. We demonstrate that the unitary regime of localization is impossible when the concentration of magnetic impurities, nMn_{\tiny M}, is smaller than a critical value, ncn_c. For nM>ncn_{\tiny M}>n_c, the dependence of ξ\xi on the dimensionless conductance, gg, is {\em reentrant}, crossing over to unitary, and back to orthogonal behavior upon increasing gg. Sensitivity of Kondo correlations to a weak {\em parallel} magnetic field results in a giant parallel magnetoresistance.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    Gene identification for the cblD defect of vitamin B12 metabolism

    Background Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential cofactor in several metabolic pathways. Intracellular conversion of cobalamin to its two coenzymes, adenosylcobalamin in mitochondria and methylcobalamin in the cytoplasm, is necessary for the homeostasis of methylmalonic acid and homocysteine. Nine defects of intracellular cobalamin metabolism have been defined by means of somatic complementation analysis. One of these defects, the cblD defect, can cause isolated methylmalonic aciduria, isolated homocystinuria, or both. Affected persons present with multisystem clinical abnormalities, including developmental, hematologic, neurologic, and metabolic findings. The gene responsible for the cblD defect has not been identified. Methods We studied seven patients with the cblD defect, and skin fibroblasts from each were investigated in cell culture. Microcell-mediated chromosome transfer and refined genetic mapping were used to localize the responsible gene. This gene was transfected into cblD fibroblasts to test for the rescue of adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin synthesis. Results The cblD gene was localized to human chromosome 2q23.2, and a candidate gene, designated MMADHC (methylmalonic aciduria, cblD type, and homocystinuria), was identified in this region. Transfection of wild-type MMADHC rescued the cellular phenotype, and the functional importance of mutant alleles was shown by means of transfection with mutant constructs. The predicted MMADHC protein has sequence homology with a bacterial ATP-binding cassette transporter and contains a putative cobalamin binding motif and a putative mitochondrial targeting sequence. Conclusions Mutations in a gene we designated MMADHC are responsible for the cblD defect in vitamin B12 metabolism.     Fluctuation-induced traffic congestion in heterogeneous networks

    In studies of complex heterogeneous networks, particularly of the Internet, significant attention was paid to analyzing network failures caused by hardware faults or overload, where the network reaction was modeled as rerouting of traffic away from failed or congested elements. Here we model another type of the network reaction to congestion -- a sharp reduction of the input traffic rate through congested routes which occurs on much shorter time scales. We consider the onset of congestion in the Internet where local mismatch between demand and capacity results in traffic losses and show that it can be described as a phase transition characterized by strong non-Gaussian loss fluctuations at a mesoscopic time scale. The fluctuations, caused by noise in input traffic, are exacerbated by the heterogeneous nature of the network manifested in a scale-free load distribution. They result in the network strongly overreacting to the first signs of congestion by significantly reducing input traffic along the communication paths where congestion is utterly negligible.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Loss of AND-34/BCAR3 Expression in Mice Results in Rupture of the Adult Lens

    PURPOSE. AND-34/BCAR3 (Breast Cancer Anti-Estrogen Resistance 3) associates with the focal adhesion adaptor protein, p130CAS/BCAR1. Expression of AND-34 regulates epithelial cell growth pattern, motility, and growth factor dependence. We sought to establish the effects of the loss of AND-34 expression in a mammalian organism. METHODS. AND-34−/− mice were generated by homologous recombination. Histopathology, in situ hybridization, and western blotting were performed on murine tissues. RESULTS. Western analyses confirmed total loss of expression in AND-34−/− splenic lymphocytes. Mice lacking AND-34 are fertile and have normal longevity. While AND-34 is widely expressed in wild type mice, histologic analysis of multiple organs in AND-34−/− mice is unremarkable and analyses of lymphocyte development show no overt changes. A small percentage of AND-34−/− mice show distinctive small white eye lesions resulting from the migration of ruptured cortical lens tissue into the anterior chamber. Following initial vacuolization and liquefaction of the lens cortex first observed at postnatal day three, posterior lens rupture occurs in all AND-34−/− mice, beginning as early as three weeks and seen in all mice at three months. Western blot analysis and in situ hybridization confirmed the presence of AND-34 RNA and protein in lens epithelial cells, particularly at the lens equator. Prior data link AND-34 expression to the activation of Akt signaling. While Akt Ser 473 phosphorylation was readily detectable in AND-34+/+ lens epithelial cells, it was markedly reduced in the AND-34−/− lens epithelium. Basal levels of p130Cas phosphorylation were higher in AND-34+/+ than in AND-34−/− lens epithelium. CONCLUSIONS. These results demonstrate the loss of AND-34 dysregulates focal adhesion complex signaling in lens epithelial cells and suggest that AND-34-mediated signaling is required for maintenance of the structural integrity of the adult ocular lens.National Institutes of Health (RO1 CA114094); Logica Foundatio

    Spin Relaxation in a Quantized Hall Regime in Presence of a Disorder

    We study the spin relaxation (SR) of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the quantized Hall regime and discuss the role of spatial inhomogeneity effects on the relaxation. The results are obtained for small filling factors (ν≪1\nu\ll 1) or when the filling factor is close to an integer. In either case SR times are essentially determined by a smooth random potential. For small ν\nu we predict a "magneto-confinement" resonance manifested in the enhancement of the SR rate when the Zeeman energy is close to the spacing of confinement sublevels in the low-energy wing of the disorder-broadened Landau level. In the resonant region the BB-dependence of the SR time has a peculiar non-monotonic shape. If ν≃2n+1\nu\simeq 2n+1, the SR is going non-exponentially.
