ABSTRACT - The study was carried out in Mossoró, in the State of Rio Grande do Norte and had as objectives to identify morphometrical data from species of Eimeria genus, to determine occurrence and respective frequencies in young and adult animals, as well as to compare infection intensity in different species. Twenty ranches were visited and feces from 478 animals from both sexes were examined, being 218 under 12 months of age and 260 adults. Eimeria oocysts were found in all surveyed properties, infecting 92.47% of examined animals. Young goats were more affected (95.41%) and shed higher quantities of oocysts in feces than adult animals. Adults presented also high percentages of infection (90.00%). It was not observed any clinical symptoms in the animals. Nine species of Eimeria were identified, presenting the following percentages for young and adult animals, respectively: E. arloingi (37.75%, 42.22%), E. alijevi (14.15%, 10.85%), E. hirci (9.25%, 13.95%), E. jolchijevi (13.6%, 2.47%); E. caprina (7.55%, 8.31%), E. christensen (9.05%, 6.89%), E. caprovina (5.20%, 9.26%), E. ninakohlyakimovae (3.05%, 5.63%) and E. apsheronica (0.45%, 0.54%). E. arloingi was the most frequent species found independently of hosts age

Charge and spin distributions in GaMnAs/GaAs Ferromagnetic Multilayers

A self-consistent electronic structure calculation based on the Luttinger-Kohn model is performed on GaMnAs/GaAs multilayers. The Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor layers are assumed to be metallic and ferromagnetic. The high Mn concentration (considered as 5% in our calculation) makes it possible to assume the density of magnetic moments as a continuous distribution, when treating the magnetic interaction between holes and the localized moment on the Mn(++) sites. Our calculation shows the distribution of heavy holes and light holes in the structure. A strong spin-polarization is observed, and the charge is concentrated mostly on the GaMnAs layers, due to heavy and light holes with their total angular momentum aligned anti-parallel to the average magnetization. The charge and spin distributions are analyzed in terms of their dependence on the number of multilayers, the widths of the GaMnAs and GaAs layers, and the width of lateral GaAs layers at the borders of the structure.Comment: 12 pages,7 figure

Questions in Science textbooks: development and validation of a checklist

Questions require a thoughtful answer and can play diverse educational roles, such as stimulating the learning of new knowledge, as is the case in Problem-Based Learning (PBL) contexts. In this context, the student is placed at the center of the teaching and learning processes and plays an active role in the learning of new knowledge. Bearing in mind the influence that textbooks exert on teaching practices, it is worthwhile questioning to which extent questions included in school science textbooks promote a PBL oriented teaching approach. This paper describes the development and validation of a checklist for analyzing the questions included in science textbooks. After introducing the checklist, an example of its application to a science unit assigned to two junior high school science courses (8th grade) is given, approaching the two disciplines in the area

The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize the culturable rhizobacteria associated with native cacti from Caatinga biome, testing their potential in plant growth promotion and abiotic stress tolerance. Bacterial isolates were examined for plant growth promotion traits and for in vitro abiotic stress tolerance. Promising isolates were 16S rRNA sequenced, tested under greenhouse conditions for plant growth promotion and induction of water deficit tolerance in maize plants. Analysis of variance was used to assess differences among treatments and, when significant, followed by the Scott-Knott?s test. The highest culturable population density was found in Melocactus zehntneri and the most promissing isolates belonged to the genus Bacillus. Under recommended conditions of irrigation, plants inoculated with the isolates CF12.2, CF8.2, and P12.2 presented an increment in root length, leaf number and root and shoot dry weight. Additionally, isolates CF6.1, CF3.1, CF8.2 and P12.2, increased shoot dry weight under water deficit conditions. In this study we identified bacterial taxa for further validation and application as biostimulants in crops grown in drylands
