    Physical properties of single-crystalline fibers of the colossal-magnetoresistance manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3

    We have grown high-quality single crystals of the colossal-magnetoresistance (CMR) material La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 by using the laser heated pedestal growth (LHPG) method. Samples were grown as fibers of different diameters, and with lengths of the order of centimeters. Their composition and structure were verified through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microcopy with EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis) and by Rietveld analysis. The quality of the crystalline fibers was confirmed by Laue and EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction) patterns. Rocking curves performed along the fiber axis revealed a half-height width of 0.073 degrees. The CMR behavior was confirmed by electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements as a function of temperature.Comment: 11 pages (including 3 figures); to appear in Appl. Phys. Let

    User evaluation of an interactive learning framework for single-arm and dual-arm robots

In our previous work, we proposed an interactive learning framework that enables a user to intervene and modify a segment of the robot arm trajectory. The framework uses gesture teleoperation and reinforcement learning to learn new motions. In the current work, we compared the user experience with the proposed framework implemented on the single-arm and dual-arm Barrett’s 7-DOF WAM robots equipped with a Microsoft Kinect camera for user tracking and gesture recognition. User performance and workload were measured in a series of trials with two groups of 6 participants using two robot settings in different order for counterbalancing. The experimental results showed that, for the same task, users required less time and produced shorter robot trajectories with the single-arm robot than with the dual-arm robot. The results also showed that the users who performed the task with the single-arm robot first experienced considerably less workload in performing the task with the dual-arm robot while achieving a higher task success rate in a shorter time.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    A new picture of the Lifshitz critical behavior

    New field theoretic renormalization group methods are developed to describe in a unified fashion the critical exponents of an m-fold Lifshitz point at the two-loop order in the anisotropic (m not equal to d) and isotropic (m=d close to 8) situations. The general theory is illustrated for the N-vector phi^4 model describing a d-dimensional system. A new regularization and renormalization procedure is presented for both types of Lifshitz behavior. The anisotropic cases are formulated with two independent renormalization group transformations. The description of the isotropic behavior requires only one type of renormalization group transformation. We point out the conceptual advantages implicit in this picture and show how this framework is related to other previous renormalization group treatments for the Lifshitz problem. The Feynman diagrams of arbitrary loop-order can be performed analytically provided these integrals are considered to be homogeneous functions of the external momenta scales. The anisotropic universality class (N,d,m) reduces easily to the Ising-like (N,d) when m=0. We show that the isotropic universality class (N,m) when m is close to 8 cannot be obtained from the anisotropic one in the limit d --> m near 8. The exponents for the uniaxial case d=3, N=m=1 are in good agreement with recent Monte Carlo simulations for the ANNNI model.Comment: 48 pages, no figures, two typos fixe

    Seleccion de especies y procedencias del genero Eucalyptus para la region costera de Bahia, Brasil.

    Con el objetivo de evaluar y seleccionar las mejores especies y/o procedencias de Eucalyptus para la region costera del Estado de Bahia (Brasil), el presente trabajo fue establecido en la Hacienda Buri, de la empresa Reflora/Ferbasa, provincia de Pojuca, Estado de Bahia, ubicada entre las coordenadas 12ø2S~51"Lat. S y 38ø19~40"Long. W, con altitud respecto al nivel del mar de 55 m. La precipitacion media anual es de 1.200 mm, concentrada entre los meses de abril y julio, con temperatura media de 25øC. Los suelos son acidos y de baja fertilidad natural. Los plantones fueron producidos en vivero de la Ernbrapa Semi-Arido, en Petrolina-PE, y conducidos al campo con altura media de 25 cm y plantados con espaciado de 3,0 m x 1,33 m, sin abono de fundacion. Fueron testadas cinco procedencias de E. urophylla, cuatro de E. camaldulensis, tres de E. brassiana y E. pellita, dos de E. citriodora, E. grandis y E. tereticornis y una de E. drepanophylla. Ei diseflo estadistico fue el de bloques al azar, con parcelas en lineas de cinco plantas, con diez repeticiones. En la evaluacion a los 30 dias del plantio, fue observado 100% de supervivencia en todas las especies y buen desempeflo silvicultural sin problemas fitosanitarios. A los 8 meses de edad los resultados apuntan variaciones significativas para la altura y supervivencia. Las especies/procedencias de mayor desarrollo en la region de Pojuca-BA, fueron E. urophylla, Proc. 14540, E. tereticornis Proc. CPATSA, E. grandis Proc. Rio Claro-SP, E. camaldulensis Proc. 14517, con alturas de 3,94; 3,64; 3,51; 3,46 y 3,45 m respectivamente, y estadisticamente superiores a las demas, con supervivencia por encima de 83%
