A study on radiative pion capture as a source of background in the search for muon to electron conversion at the Mu2e experiment.

The following thesis will cover the process of radiative pion capture in the Mu2e experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Radiative pion capture (RPC) is a process that is able to mimic the signal of an electron spawned from the neutrino-less conversion of a muon. In this paper we will discuss the current Standard Model accepted by physicists, and discuss charged lepton flavor violation, which is the motivation behind Mu2e. This paper will cover the theory behind Mu2e and RPC, as well as the apparatus involved in the Mu2e experiment. Next, software and simulations used to carry out the RPC study will be explained in detail. Following this discussion, final results of this background study will be presented. These results indicate that the RPC process is estimated to have little effect on the Mu2e experiment throughout its lifetime

From Self-Sufficiency to Personal and Family Sustainability: A New Paradigm for Social Policy

Current social policy that affects welfare recipients focuses on the concept of self-sufficiency where leaving welfare for work is the goal. While this approach has reduced welfare rolls, it has not necessarily helped low-income people improve their economic, educational, or social outlook. This paper suggests that the concept of Personal and Family Sustainability (PFS) may be a better way to evaluate and direct social policy. A definition of PFS is developed from the environmental and community development roots of sustainability and four domains for creating PFS indicators are introduced

The Right to Counsel in Police Interrogation Cases: \u3cem\u3eMiranda\u3c/em\u3e and \u3cem\u3eWilliams\u3c/em\u3e

This article will consider some of the theoretical and practical ramifications of the Williams decision and compare its protections to the protections offered by Miranda. The article, focussing on the right to counsel, discusses the nature of the police conduct which is prohibited by each decision, the time at which the protections involved become effective, and the standard by which a waiver of the rights will be measured. The article concludes that there may be significant differences in the application of the two cases and that a uniform rule based on the sixth amendment may be superior to the present approach
