Gene mutations in 21 unrelated cases of phenotypic heterozygous protein C deficiency and thrombosis
Mutations have been identified in the protein C gene in 21 patients with venous thromboembolism and phenotypic heterozygous protein C deficiency. In 20 probands, single mutations were the only abnormalities identified by sequencing all coding regions, intron exon boundaries and the promoter region back to -1540. In one proband 2 mutations were identified and in another family 2 mutations were identified (but not both in the proband). Of the 23 mutations, 18 resulted in predicted amino acid substitutions, 3 were mutations resulting in stop codons, one was a mutation within a consensus splice sequence and another a 9 base pair insertion within exon 5 (this region within exon 5 is proposed as a deletion/insertion hot spot). A novel polymorphism was also, uniquely, identified in the propeptide region of the molecule (Pro-21Pro; CCT to CCC) in a kindred from Hong Kong. Cosegregation of the protein C gene mutation with protein C deficiency could be determined in 13 families. In a further family, phenotypic protein C deficiency and the genetic mutation cosegregated in only 4/5 members, The first thrombotic incident occurred in the probands between the ages of 11 and 59 years and 12 individuals suffered recurrent thrombosis. Thrombosis occurred in at least one other family member in 9/21 families, but in 2 of these it was inconsistently associated with protein C deficiency. An independent genetic risk factor, factor V Arg506Gln (FV Leiden) was identified in 2 probands (and 3 family members) and in 4 protein C deficient members of a third family but not in the proband. The results suggest that in the majority of probands with thrombosis and phenotypic protein C deficiency, a single protein C gene mutation is associated with thrombosis. However, it is also possible that additional unknown genetic risk factors contribute to the thrombotic risk. photoproduction on the proton for photon energies from 0.675 to 2.875 GeV
Differential cross sections for the reaction have been
measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged
photon beam with energies from 0.675 to 2.875 GeV. The results reported here
possess greater accuracy in the absolute normalization than previous
measurements. They disagree with recent CB-ELSA measurements for the process at
forward scattering angles. Agreement with the SAID and MAID fits is found below
1 GeV. The present set of cross sections has been incorporated into the SAID
database, and exploratory fits have been extended to 3 GeV. Resonance couplings
have been extracted and compared to previous determinations.Comment: 18 pages, 48 figure
Search for the pentaquark in the reaction
A search for the \thp in the reaction was completed
using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. A study of the same reaction,
published earlier, reported the observation of a narrow \thp resonance. The
present experiment, with more than 30 times the integrated luminosity of our
earlier measurement, does not show any evidence for a narrow pentaquark
resonance. The angle-integrated upper limit on \thp production in the mass
range of 1.52 to 1.56 GeV/c for the reaction is
0.3 nb (95% CL). This upper limit depends on assumptions made for the mass and
angular distribution of \thp production. Using \lamstar production as an
empirical measure of rescattering in the deuteron, the cross section upper
limit for the elementary reaction is estimated to be
a factor of 10 higher, {\it i.e.}, nb (95% CL).Comment: 5 figures, submitted to PRL, revised for referee comment
Survey of A_LT' asymmetries in semi-exclusive electron scattering on He4 and C12
Single spin azimuthal asymmetries A_LT' were measured at Jefferson Lab using
2.2 and 4.4 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons incident on He4 and C12
targets in the CLAS detector. A_LT' is related to the imaginary part of the
longitudinal-transverse interference and in quasifree nucleon knockout it
provides an unambiguous signature for final state interactions (FSI).
Experimental values of A_LT' were found to be below 5%, typically |A_LT'| < 3%
for data with good statistical precision. Optical Model in Eikonal
Approximation (OMEA) and Relativistic Multiple-Scattering Glauber Approximation
(RMSGA) calculations are shown to be consistent with the measured asymmetries.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Single pi+ Electroproduction on the Proton in the First and Second Resonance Regions at 0.25GeV^2 < Q^2 < 0.65GeV^2 Using CLAS
The ep -> e'pi^+n reaction was studied in the first and second nucleon
resonance regions in the 0.25 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 0.65 GeV^2 range using the CLAS
detector at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For the first time
the absolute cross sections were measured covering nearly the full angular
range in the hadronic center-of-mass frame. The structure functions sigma_TL,
sigma_TT and the linear combination sigma_T+epsilon*sigma_L were extracted by
fitting the phi-dependence of the measured cross sections, and were compared to
the MAID and Sato-Lee models.Comment: Accepted for publication in PR
Photodisintegration of He into p+t
The two-body photodisintegration of He into a proton and a triton has
been studied using the CEBAF Large-Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson
Laboratory. Real photons produced with the Hall-B bremsstrahlung-tagging system
in the energy range from 0.35 to 1.55 GeV were incident on a liquid He
target. This is the first measurement of the photodisintegration of He
above 0.4 GeV. The differential cross sections for the He
reaction have been measured as a function of photon-beam energy and
proton-scattering angle, and are compared with the latest model calculations by
J.-M. Laget. At 0.6-1.2 GeV, our data are in good agreement only with the
calculations that include three-body mechanisms, thus confirming their
importance. These results reinforce the conclusion of our previous study of the
three-body breakup of He that demonstrated the great importance of
three-body mechanisms in the energy region 0.5-0.8 GeV .Comment: 13 pages submitted in one tgz file containing 2 tex file and 22

Exclusive electroproduction on the proton at CLAS
The reaction has been measured, using the 5.754
GeV electron beam of Jefferson Lab and the CLAS detector. This represents the
largest ever set of data for this reaction in the valence region. Integrated
and differential cross sections are presented. The , and
dependences of the cross section are compared to theoretical calculations based
on -channel meson-exchange Regge theory on the one hand and on quark handbag
diagrams related to Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) on the other hand.
The Regge approach can describe at the 30% level most of the features
of the present data while the two GPD calculations that are presented in this
article which succesfully reproduce the high energy data strongly underestimate
the present data. The question is then raised whether this discrepancy
originates from an incomplete or inexact way of modelling the GPDs or the
associated hard scattering amplitude or whether the GPD formalism is simply
inapplicable in this region due to higher-twists contributions, incalculable at

Exclusive Photoproduction of the Cascade (Xi) Hyperons
We report on the first measurement of exclusive Xi-(1321) hyperon
photoproduction in gamma p --> K+ K+ Xi- for 3.2 < E(gamma) < 3.9 GeV. The
final state is identified by the missing mass in p(gamma,K+ K+)X measured with
the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. We have detected a significant
number of the ground-state Xi-(1321)1/2+, and have estimated the total cross
section for its production. We have also observed the first excited state
Xi-(1530)3/2+. Photoproduction provides a copious source of Xi's. We discuss
the possibilities of a search for the recently proposed Xi5-- and Xi5+

First Measurement of Beam-Recoil Observables Cx and Cz in Hyperon Photoproduction
Spin transfer from circularly polarized real photons to recoiling hyperons
has been measured for the reactions and
. The data were obtained using the CLAS
detector at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies between 1.6 and 2.53
GeV, and for . For the , the
polarization transfer coefficient along the photon momentum axis, , was
found to be near unity for a wide range of energy and kaon production angles.
The associated transverse polarization coefficient, , is smaller than
by a roughly constant difference of unity. Most significantly, the {\it
total} polarization vector, including the induced polarization ,
has magnitude consistent with unity at all measured energies and production
angles when the beam is fully polarized. For the this simple
phenomenology does not hold. All existing hadrodynamic models are in poor

Prospective study of the primary evaluation of 1016 horses with clinical signs of abdominal pain by veterinary practitioners, and the differentiation of critical and non‑critical cases
Background: The majority of research on the evaluation of horses with colic is focused on referral hospital populations. Early identification of critical cases is important to optimise outcome and welfare. The aim of this prospective study was to survey the primary evaluation of horses with clinical signs of abdominal pain by veterinary practitioners, and compare the initial presentation of critical and non-critical cases.
Results: Data from 1016 primary evaluations of horses presenting with clinical signs of colic were submitted by 167 veterinary practitioners across the United Kingdom over a 13 month period. The mean age of the study population was 13.5 years (median 12.0, range 0–42). Mean heart rate on primary presentation was 47 beats/min (median 44, range 18–125), mean respiratory rate was 20 breaths/min (median 16, range 6–100), and median gastrointestinal auscultation score (0–12, minimum–maximum) was 5 (range 0–12). Clinical signs assessed using a behavioural severity score (0–17, minimum–maximum), were between 0 and 6 in 70.4 % of cases, and 7 12 for 29.6 % of cases. Rectal examination was performed in 73.8 % of cases. Cases that responded positively to simple medical treatment were categorised retrospectively as ‘non-critical’; cases that required intensive medical treatment, surgical intervention, died or were euthanased were categorised as ‘critical’. Eight-hundred-and-twenty- two cases met these criteria; 76.4 % were ‘non-critical’ and 23.6 % were ‘critical’. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify features of the clinical presentation associated with critical cases. Five variables were retained in the final multivariable model: combined pain score: (OR 1.19, P 2.5 s (OR 3.21, P = 0.046, 95 % CI 1.023–10.09), weak pulse character (OR 2.90, P = 0.004, 95 % CI 1.39–5.99) and absence of gut sounds in ≥1 quadrant (OR 3.65, P < 0.001, 95 % CI 2.08–6.41).
Conclusions: This is the first study comparing the primary presentation of critical and non-critical cases of abdominal pain. Pain, heart rate, gastrointestinal borborygmi and simple indicators of hypovolaemia were significant indicators of critical cases, even at the primary veterinary examination, and should be considered essential components of the initial assessment and triage of horses presenting with colic
