We live in a tightly knit world. Our emotions, desires, perceptions and decisions are interlinked in our interactions with others. We are constantly influencing our surroundings and being influenced by others. In this thesis, we unfold some aspects of social and economical interactions by studying empirical datasets. We project these interactions into a network representation to gain insights on how socio-economic systems form and function and how they change over time. Specifically, this thesis is centered on four main questions: How do the means of communication shape our social network structures? How can we uncover the underlying network of interests from massive observational data? How does a crisis spread in a real financial network? How do the dynamics of interaction influence spreading processes in networks? We use a variety of methods from physics, psychology, sociology, and economics as well as computational, mathematical and statistical analysis to address these questions

There are only a few possiblilties for naming the inhabitants of places in the United States: New Yorker, Chicagoan, Philadelphian, Bostionian, Scrantonite. There may be more exotic forms for those from towns with French or Spanish names, but the possibilities fall far short of even Britain, where Oxonians come from Oxford, Cantabrigians from Cambridge, Liverpudlians from Liverpool, and Mancunians from Manchester. In my home town of Newcastle in New South Wales, we used to pride ourselves on our knowledge of Latin, calling ourselves Novocastrians

This is a summary of important findings from a continuous quality improvement (CQI) program for type 2 diabetes care in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care (PHC). The program has been in place for more than 10 years, with 175 health centres across Australia giving the ABCD National Research Partnership permission to analyse data from this program. Researchers looked at data from audits of type 2 diabetes care in community controlled, government and non-government health services in very remote, remote, rural and urban areas. They found important messages about improving mental health and wellbeing care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with type 2 diabetes. The messages are relevant to caring for people with other chronic illnesses, such as heart disease and kidney disease. The ABCD National Research Partnership works across states and territories in Australia to improve the quality of primary health care available to Indigenous people. This document contains two research briefs containing: A summary of research findings for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers/Health Practitioners A summary of research findings for Community Health Board

The ABCD National Research Partnership works across states and territories in Australia to improve the quality of primary health care available to Indigenous people. Researchers looked at data from clinical audits in community controlled, government and non-government health centres in very remote, remote, and non-remote areas. Over a number of years they measured and compared the following five items of type 2 diabetes care: 1 laboratory tests 2 physical checks by the health centre team 3 physical checks by specialists 4 brief interventions for nutrition and exercise 5 education and counselling interventions for tobacco and high-risk alcohol use.
