    Magnetic properties and geochemistry of the active oxidation front and the youngest sapropel in the eastern Mediterranean Sea

    Magnetic properties (IRM, ARM, xin, S-ratio at 0.3 T, room temperature (RT) hysteresis and thermomagnetic curves) and geochemical data (Fe, S, Mn, Al, Ti, organic C) were studied in two eastern Mediterranean boxcores (ABC26 and BC19) at a resolution of 3-5 mm. The boxcores contain sapropel S1 (9-6 kyr BP) at a few decimetres below seafloor. The magnetic fraction consists predominantly of single-domain (SD) to pseudo-singledomain (PSD) magnetite in the entire cores. The original input of magnetic grains comes from two sources: aeolian dust (both cores) and volcanic ash from the Minoan eruption of Santorini (core BC19 only). Non-steady-state diagenesis has changed the magnetic mineralogy considerably in these alternating organic-rich/organic-poor sediments. During deposition of sapropel S1, reductive diagenesis and pyritization in and just below the sapropel caused lower magnetic intensities, coarser magnetic grain sizes and partial maghemitization. In thermomagnetic curves two types of pyrite can be identified: one oxidizes below 450 uC and the other above 450 uC. The higher oxidation temperature is predominantly found below the sapropel. This may be related to the microtexture of pyrite, which is euhedral below sapropels and mainly framboidal within sapropels. Since the end of sapropel deposition a downward moving oxidation front has oxidized the upper half (c. 5 cm) of the sapropel. The oxidized part of the sapropel is enriched in diagenetically formed Fe oxides with relatively high coercivity and ARM. The maximum coercivity is found in a distinct layer between the present-day Mn- and Fe-redox boundaries at the top of the unoxidized sapropel. The freshly precipitated Fe oxides in this centimetre-thick layer contain a mixture of superparamagnetic (SP) grains and high-coercivity SD magnetite. Higher in the oxidized zone the freshly precipitated Fe oxides have aged into generally slightly lower-coercivity SD grains, with relatively high ARM. In addition to the diagenetic formation of Fe oxides at the top of the sapropel, formation of a ferrimagnetic Fe monosulphide may have occurred within the sapropel during later stages of diagenesis, which may have enhanced the ARM signal in the organic-rich interval in particular

    Scientific and clinical implications of heterogeneity in uveal melanoma

    Uveal melanoma, as opposed to cutaneous melanoma, is a tumor which is predominantly located in the center of the eye. Given its potential aggressive nature with fatal consequences, it is important to start treatment in a timely manner. Currently, treatment consists of decreasing the size of the tumor by means of radiation therapy or surgery, but by mapping the genetic makeup of uveal melanoma, personalized treatment potentially becomes possible. In this thesis we tried to solve a piece of this genetic puzzle by focusing on genetic and cellular differences within and between different uveal melanoma. By means of an innovative new technique, digital PCR, we aimed to visualize this so-called heterogeneity. We demonstrate that we can accurately assess which genetic aberrations are present in uveal melanoma. Moreover, we show in what percentage of cells these aberrations are present. Additionally, we illustrate which cell types play an important role in uveal melanoma development. This way, we characterized a substantial amount of different uveal melanoma based on their heterogeneity profile.     Pitch Memory in Nonmusicians and Musicians: Revealing Functional Differences Using Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation

    For music and language processing, memory for relative pitches is highly important. Functional imaging studies have shown activation of a complex neural system for pitch memory. One region that has been shown to be causally involved in the process for nonmusicians is the supramarginal gyrus (SMG). The present study aims at replicating this finding and at further examining the role of the SMG for pitch memory in musicians. Nonmusicians and musicians received cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left SMG, right SMG, or sham stimulation, while completing a pitch recognition, pitch recall, and visual memory task. Cathodal tDCS over the left SMG led to a significant decrease in performance on both pitch memory tasks in nonmusicians. In musicians, cathodal stimulation over the left SMG had no effect, but stimulation over the right SMG impaired performance on the recognition task only. Furthermore, the results show a more pronounced deterioration effect for longer pitch sequences indicating that the SMG is involved in maintaining higher memory load. No stimulation effect was found in both groups on the visual control task. These findings provide evidence for a causal distinction of the left and right SMG function in musicians and nonmusician

    Phase diagram of a superconductor / ferromagnet bilayer

    The magnetic field (H) - temperature (T) phase diagram of a superconductor is significantly altered when domains are present in an underlying ferromagnet with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. When the domains have a band-like shape, the critical temperature Tc of the superconductor in zero field is strongly reduced, and the slope of the upper critical field as a function of T is increased by a factor of 2.4 due to the inhomogeneous stray fields of the domains. Field compensation effects can cause an asymmetric phase boundary with respect to H when the ferromagnet contains bubble domains. For a very inhomogeneous domain structure, Tc~H^2 for low H and Tc~H for higher fields, indicating a dimensional crossover from a one-dimensional network-like to a two-dimensional behavior in the nucleation of superconductivity.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    In this article an analytical and numerical study of superconducting thin film with ferromagnetic textures of elliptical geometries in close proximity is presented. The screening currents induced in the superconductor due to the magnetic texture are calculated. Close to the superconducting transition temperature TcT_c the spontaneous creation of superconducting vortices becomes energy favorable depending on the value of the magnetization and the geometrical quantities of the magnetic texture. The creation of vortices by elliptic dots is more energy favorable than those created by circular ones. The superconductor covered by elliptic dots array exhibits anisotropic transport properties.Comment: 4 pages, 5figure

    Targeting of the MAPK and AKT pathways in conjunctival melanoma shows potential synergy

    Purpose: Conjunctival melanoma (CM) is a rare but lethal form of cancer. Similar to cutaneous melanoma, CM frequently carries activating mutations in BRAF and NRAS. We studied whether CM as well as conjunctival benign and premalignant melanocytic lesions express targets in the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and AKT pathways, and whether specific inhibitors can suppress CM growth in vitro. Methods: 131 conjunctival lesions obtained from 129 patients were collected. The presence of BRAF V600E mutation and expression of phosphorylated (p)-ERK and p-AKT were assessed by immunohistochemistry. We studied cell proliferation, phosphorylation, cell cycling and apoptosis in three CM cell lines using two BRAF inhibitors (Vemurafenib and Dabrafenib), a MEK inhibitor (MEK162) and an AKT inhibitor (MK2206). Results: The BRAF V600E mutation was present in 19% of nevi and 26% of melanomas, but not in primary acquired melanosis (PAM). Nuclear and cytoplasmic p-ERK and p-AKT were expressed in all conjunctival lesions. Both BRAF inhibitors suppressed growth of both BRAF mutant CM cell lines, but only one induced cell death. MEK162 and MK2206 inhibited proliferation of CM cells in a dose-dependent manner, and the combination of these two drugs led to synergistic growth inhibition and cell death in all CM cell lines. Conclusion: ERK and AKT are constitutively activated in conjunctival nevi, PAM and melanoma. While BRAF inhibitors prohibited cell growth, they were not always cytotoxic. Combining MEK and AKT inhibitors led to more growth inhibition and cell death in CM cells. The combination may benefit patients suffering from metastatic conjunctival melanoma

    Two proof-of-principle experiments towards T1-limited magnetic resonance imaging with NV centers in diamond are demonstrated. First, a large number of Rabi oscillations is measured and it is demonstrated that the hyperfine interaction due to the NV's 14N can be extracted from the beating oscillations. Second, the Rabi beats under V-type microwave excitation of the three hyperfine manifolds is studied experimentally and described theoretically.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure

    Liquid organic hydrogen carriers:Process design and economic analysis for manufacturing N-ethylcarbazole

    This paper revisits the economics of manufacturing N-ethylcarbazole (NEC), a strong candidate for large-scale liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) supply chains, because of its high H2 storage capacity (6 wt%), selective hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions, and favorable reaction enthalpy and reaction temperatures compared to other LOHC systems. Two different process routes for producing NEC from industrial chemicals are selected out of 10 possible options: one using aniline and the other using cyclohexanone and nitrobenzene as feedstock. The required capital and operational costs are estimated to determine a NEC break-even cost for a capacity of 225 ktpa. NEC break-even costs of 3.0and3.0 and 2.6 per kg LOHC are found for the routes. This is significantly less than the 40/kgcostthathasgenerallybeenreportedinliteratureforNEC,thusimprovingtheeconomicviabilityofusingNECasLOHC.Thetotalfixedcapitalcostsareestimatedtobe40/kg cost that has generally been reported in literature for NEC, thus improving the economic viability of using NEC as LOHC. The total fixed capital costs are estimated to be 200 MM and 250MM.Furthermore,thepricesofthefeedstockshowthelargestinfluence(76250 MM. Furthermore, the prices of the feedstock show the largest influence (76% and 72%) on the final NEC break-even costs. The overall LOHC price contribution to the levelized H2 cost is estimated to be 0.77–0.90perkgH2fora60−dayroundtripand0.90 per kg H2 for a 60-day roundtrip and 0.09–$0.10 per kg H2 for a 7-day roundtrip. It is important to note that both routes rely heavily on laboratory scale data and the corresponding assumptions that stem from this limitation. Therefore, this research can serve as a guide to future experimental studies into validating the key assumptions made for this analysis.</p
