Spectral modeling of switched-mode power converters in discontinuous conduction mode

    Get PDF
Analytical spectral modeling of switched-mode PWM converters, operating in the discontinuous conduction mode, is presented. The modeling approach is to derive analytical expressions of the converter output response using the extended Volterra functional series. Nonlinear frequency responses, including additional DC offset as well as significant subharmonic and higher harmonic components, due to large-signal perturbations of both the duty ratio and source voltage, are investigated. Their vulnerability to switching frequencies are also described. This modeling approach has been applied to various PWM converters, boost, buck and buck-boost types, operating in the discontinuous conduction mode, and the results are verified.published_or_final_versio

FXN promoter silencing in the humanized mouse model of Friedreich Ataxia

    Get PDF
Background - Friedreich ataxia is caused by an expanded GAA triplet-repeat sequence in intron 1 of the FXN gene that results in epigenetic silencing of the FXN promoter. This silencing mechanism is seen in patient-derived lymphoblastoid cells but it remains unknown if it is a widespread phenomenon affecting multiple cell types and tissues. Methodology / Principal Findings - The humanized mouse model of Friedreich ataxia (YG8sR), which carries a single transgenic insert of the human FXN gene with an expanded GAA triplet-repeat in intron 1, is deficient for FXN transcript when compared to an isogenic transgenic mouse lacking the expanded repeat (Y47R). We found that in YG8sR the deficiency of FXN transcript extended both upstream and downstream of the expanded GAA triplet-repeat, suggestive of deficient transcriptional initiation. This pattern of deficiency was seen in all tissues tested, irrespective of whether they are known to be affected or spared in disease pathogenesis, in both neuronal and non-neuronal tissues, and in cultured primary fibroblasts. FXN promoter function was directly measured via metabolic labeling of newly synthesized transcripts in fibroblasts, which revealed that the YG8sR mouse was significantly deficient in transcriptional initiation compared to the Y47R mouse. Conclusions / Significance- Deficient transcriptional initiation accounts for FXN transcriptional deficiency in the humanized mouse model of Friedreich ataxia, similar to patient-derived cells, and the mechanism underlying promoter silencing in Friedreich ataxia is widespread across multiple cell types and tissues. This research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (R01 NS072418), and the Muscular Dystrophy Association to S.I.B. Texture and chemical composition analyses on the Hg0.66Pb0.33Ba2Ca2Cu3Oy superconductor using the sealed quartz tube technique

    Get PDF
Pb-substituted Hg-based superconductor of Hg0.66Pb0.33Ba2Ca2Cu3Oy has been fabricated using the sealed quartz tube technique. R-T and x-ray diffraction pattern (XDP) measurements show that the specimen has a Tc of 135 K and contains mainly the Hg-1223 phase. Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM/EDX) and transmission electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray analysis (TEM/EDX) were employed to study the texture and chemical composition of the specimen. It is found that the specimen contains round-shaped grains with a mixture of Hg-1223, BaCuO2, and Ca0.85CuO2 phases, square-shaped grains with a formula of PbBa2O3, small single crystals with single Hg-1223 phase, and crystal-like layers with a mixture of Hg-1223 and BaCuO2 phase. We consider that though the doping of Pb can benefit the stabilization of the Hg-1223 phase, it introduces other impurity phases and textures in the specimen at the same time.published_or_final_versio

Compression and amplification algorithms in hearing aids impair the selectivity of neural responses to speech

    Get PDF
In quiet environments, hearing aids improve the perception of low-intensity sounds. However, for high-intensity sounds in background noise, the aids often fail to provide a benefit to the wearer. Here, using large-scale single-neuron recordings from hearing-impaired gerbils—an established animal model of human hearing—we show that hearing aids restore the sensitivity of neural responses to speech, but not their selectivity. Rather than reflecting a deficit in supra-threshold auditory processing, the low selectivity is a consequence of hearing-aid compression (which decreases the spectral and temporal contrasts of incoming sound) and amplification (which distorts neural responses, regardless of whether hearing is impaired). Processing strategies that avoid the trade-off between neural sensitivity and selectivity should improve the performance of hearing aids

Epidemiology of acute primary angle-closure glaucoma in the Hong Kong Chinese population: prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of acute primary angle-closure glaucoma in the Hong Kong Chinese population, and to identify risk factors for this condition. DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: University teaching hospital, Hong Kong. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with acute primary angle-closure glaucoma presenting between 1 March 1998 and 29 February 2000. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Demographic data, presenting symptoms and signs, temporal details of the presentation, and precipitating factors. The crude regional incidence was calculated according to the Hong Kong population census of 1991 and the age-specific incidence was calculated. RESULTS: Seventy-two cases (72 eyes of 72 patients) of acute primary angle-closure glaucoma were recruited. The crude incidence was 10.4 per 100,000 per year in the population aged 30 years and older. Patients at higher risk of attacks were those aged 70 years or older (age-specific incidence, 58.7 per 100,000 per year) and females, who had a relative risk of 3.8 compared with males (95% confidence interval, 1.7-8.4). Only four (5.6%) patients had a positive family history of acute primary angle-closure glaucoma. Seventeen (23.6%) patients were noted to have an upper respiratory tract infection before the attack, and 25 (34.7%) patients had taken antitussive agents. There was a statistically significant inverse correlation between the monthly attack rate and the monthly rate of influenza (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient = -0.388; P=0.031). CONCLUSION: There is a high incidence of acute primary angle-closure glaucoma among Chinese residents of Hong Kong, with elderly females at highest risk. A significant proportion of patients reported upper respiratory tract infection or the use of antitussive medication prior to attacks.published_or_final_versio

Thyroid cancer cells boundary location by a fuzzy edge detection method

    Get PDF
Morphometric assessment of tumor cells is important in the prediction of biological behavior of thyroid cancer. In order to automate the process, the computer-based system has to recognize the boundary of the cells. Many methods for the boundary detection have appeared in the literature and some of them applied to microscopic slice analysis. However, there is no reliable method since the gray-levels in the nuclei are uneven and are similar to the background. In the paper, a fuzzy edge detection method is used and is based on an improved generalized fuzzy operator. The method enhances the nuclei and effectively separates the cells from the background.published_or_final_versio
