    Bibliography of the Echinoderms of the Indian Ocean

    Echinoderms from the point of view of their taxonomy and evolution form one of the most interesting groups of marine animals. Except for the R.I.M.S. “Investigator” collections reported on by various authors there has been no sustained work on this group in this country till detailed investigations were initiated recently by Mr. D.B. James of this Institute. In the course of extensive work carried out, he had taken considerable pains to collect a vast number of references to form a comprehensive bibliography which has been augmented with some of the references collected by Mr. R.S. Lal Mohan for Bulletin Nos. 4 and 11 issued by this Institute. There are in all 691 references listed in the present Bulletin covering all the classes of echinoderms and it is hoped that the availability of a consolidated bibliography like this would act as an incentive to interested workers to take up this group for study. The authors have done their best to make the list as comprehensive as possible. However, it would very much be appreciated if omissions and errors if any, are kindly brought to our notice

    Time-asymmetry of probabilities versus relativistic causal structure: an arrow of time

    There is an incompatibility between the symmetries of causal structure in relativity theory and the signaling abilities of probabilistic devices with inputs and outputs: while time-reversal in relativity will not introduce the ability to signal between spacelike separated regions, this is not the case for probabilistic devices with space-like separated input-output pairs. We explicitly describe a non-signaling device which becomes a perfect signaling device under time-reversal, where time-reversal can be conceptualized as playing backwards a videotape of an agent manipulating the device. This leads to an arrow of time that is identifiable when studying the correlations of events for spacelike separated regions. Somewhat surprisingly, although time-reversal of Popuscu-Roerlich boxes also allows agents to signal, it does not yield a perfect signaling device.     Confusing Sterile Neutrinos with Deviation from Tribimaximal Mixing at Neutrino Telescopes

    We expound the impact of extra sterile species on the ultra high energy neutrino fluxes in neutrino telescopes. We use three types of well-known flux ratios and compare the values of these flux ratios in presence of sterile neutrinos, with those predicted by deviation from the tribimaximal mixing scheme. We show that in the upcoming neutrino telescopes, its easy to confuse between the signature of sterile neutrinos with that of the deviation from tribimaximal mixing. We also show that if the measured flux ratios acquire a value well outside the range predicted by the standard scenario with three active neutrinos only, it might be possible to tell the presence of extra sterile neutrinos by observing ultra high energy neutrinos in future neutrino telescopes.Comment: 22 pages, version to appear in Phys.     Scrub typhus, a zoonosis, is known to present with varied clinical presentation. We present a case of acute mastoiditis who did not respond to conventional antibiotic therapy. The detailed repeat clinical examination revealed lymphadenopathy with eschar and IgM antibodies for scrub typhus by ELISA were positive. Patient had dramatic response to doxycycline therapy

    Sediments accumulate in the Santa Barbara Basin relatively rapidly: about 3-4 mm yr-1 based on the analysis of varves. These deposits are ideal for studying the applicability of nuclear geochronological techniques in a natural situation. Studies of the depth distribution of several radionuclides, manmade 55Fe and naturally occurring 210Pb and Th isotopes, in recent Santa Barbara sediment layers permit an evaluation of the geochemical behavior of Fe, Pb, and Th in coastal waters and have established the usefulness of 55Fe and 210Pb for dating coastial or near coastal sediments deposited during the last decade and half-century respectively

    Genetic diversity and character association analysis based on pomological traits in olive (Olea europaea L.)

    Thirteen exotic genotypes of olive (Olea europaea L.) were studied for the genetic variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis for fruit quality, yield and yield contributing traits at experimental farm of ICAR-CITH, Srinagar during 2009-2013. Maximum variability was recorded for fruit yield and oil content, however, low differ-ences between the phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variations indicated low environmental influences on the expression of these characters. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was obtained with fruit yield per plant, acidity, fruit pulp weight, fruit weight and stone weight. Fruit weight (r=0.329), stone weight (r=0.405) and oil content (r=0.841) were the most important traits, which possessed significant positive association with fruit yield per plant. Path coefficient analysis revealed that among the different yield contributing characters oil content (0.875), fruit weight (0.797) followed by acidity (0.501), peroxides value ( 0.199) and fruit length (0.054) influenced fruit yield per plant directly. The direct effects of these characters on fruit yield were found positive and considerably very high.The selection based on fruit weight, stone weight oil content and yield per plant will be effective for enhancing the fruit and oil yieldand making future olive breeding strategies
