An alternative approach to the construction of Schur-Weyl transform
We propose an alternative approach for the construction of the unitary matrix
which performs generalized unitary rotations of the system consisting of
independent identical subsystems (for example spin system). This matrix, when
applied to the system, results in a change of degrees of freedom, uncovering
the information hidden in non-local degrees of freedom. This information can be
used, inter alia, to study the structure of entangled states, their
classification and may be useful for construction of quantum algorithms.Comment: 6 page

Evidence for a heritable predisposition to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Abstract

Background

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) came to attention in the 1980s, but initial investigations did not find organic causes. Now decades later, the etiology of CFS has yet to be understood, and the role of genetic predisposition in CFS remains controversial. Recent reports of CFS association with the retrovirus xenotropic murine leukemic virus-related virus (XMRV) or other murine leukemia related retroviruses (MLV) might also suggest underlying genetic implications within the host immune system.

Methods

We present analyses of familial clustering of CFS in a computerized genealogical resource linking multiple generations of genealogy data with medical diagnosis data of a large Utah health care system. We compare pair-wise relatedness among cases to expected relatedness in the Utah population, and we estimate risk for CFS for first, second, and third degree relatives of CFS cases.

Results

We observed significant excess relatedness of CFS cases compared to that expected in this population. Significant excess relatedness was observed for both close (p <0.001) and distant relationships (p = 0.010). We also observed significant excess CFS relative risk among first (2.70, 95% CI: 1.56-4.66), second (2.34, 95% CI: 1.31-4.19), and third degree relatives (1.93, 95% CI: 1.21-3.07).

Conclusions

These analyses provide strong support for a heritable contribution to predisposition to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. A population of high-risk CFS pedigrees has been identified, the study of which may provide additional understanding.</p
Mapping of Schistosomiasis and Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis in the Regions of Centre, East and West Cameroon
Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) are a major public health problem in Cameroon. The national control strategy of these diseases was based on historical data collected 25 years ago, which might be outdated in some situations due to several factors including control activities, improved or degraded sanitation and hygiene, socio-economic improvement and disease transmission dynamics. To help planning, improving control strategies and evaluation of control activities, there was a need to update the distribution of schistosomiasis and STH. We conducted parasitological surveys in three regions of Cameroon, i.e. Centre, East and West. Our results showed a significant decrease of STH infection prevalence and intensities in all these three regions, in comparison to previous mapping data, with an overall decline of prevalence from 81.1–93% to 10.5–46.6%. These results show the positive impact of annual deworming campaigns, and illustrate the progressive success of the national programme for the control of schistosomiasis and STH in Cameroon. Furthermore, our results showed an increase of the number of high transmission foci of schistosomiasis, and allowed identifying new health districts requiring mass treatment with praziquantel, and those where deworming should be reinforced
The Effects of Playing with Thin Dolls on Body Image and Food Intake in Young Girls
This study experimentally tested the effects of playing with thin dolls on body image and food intake in 6- to 10-year-old Dutch girls (N = 117). Girls were randomly assigned to play with a thin doll, an average-sized doll, or Legos in a no doll control condition. After 10 min, they participated in a taste-test and completed questionnaires about body image. No differences were found between conditions for any of the body image variables. However, girls who played with the average-sized doll ate significantly more food than girls in other exposure conditions. Although no support was found for the assumption that playing with thin dolls influences body image, the dolls directly affected actual food intake in these young girls
MTV and MGV: Two Criteria for Nonlinear PCA
ized Variance) are popular criteria for PCA with optimal scaling. They are adopted by the SAS-PRINQUAL procedure and OSMOD (Saito and Otsu,1988). MTV is an intuitive generalization of linear PCA criterion. We will show some proper-ties of nonlinear PCA with these criteria in an application to the data of NLSY79 (Zagorsky,1997), a large panel survey in the U.S., conducted over twenty years. We will show the following. (1) The effectiveness of PCA with optimal scaling as a tool for large social research data analysis. We can obtain useful results when it complements analyses by regression models. (2) Features of MTV and MGV, especially their abilities and deficiencies in real data analysis. 1
