New Zealand Working For Families programme: Methodological considerations for evaluating MSD programmes

    Get PDF
The methodological review is the second part of the evaluation research commissioned by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) in 2005 to help in the preparation of the evaluation of the Working for Families (WFF) programme. This review enumerates the key evaluation questions identified by MSD as central to their policy concerns and considers how the features of WFF could affect evaluation. It details the methodological and data requirements that must be addressed in order to meet the four key evaluation objectives, namely: (1) tracking and evaluating the implementation and delivery of WFF (2) identifying changes in entitlement take-up and reasons for it (3) establishing the impact of WFF on employment-related outcomes (4) assessing WFF’s effect on net income and quality of life more generally. The methodological review complements the literature review by reviewing evaluations from around the world that are pertinent to WFF. An overview of evaluation methods is provided, concentrating on particular issues that arise within the WFF context. Section 2 focuses on implementation and delivery. Section 3 covers the issues related to take-up and entitlement and their evaluation. Section 4 discusses the evaluation methodologies that can be used in evaluating programmes such as WFF and introduces the data requirements they entail. Making work pay is the focus of section 5. Finally, section 6 examines hardship and poverty, living standards and wellbeing.

This document presents a reconnection model of single-phase transformers (SPT) along a real three-phase network of a predominant distribution system of residential loads, obtaining a minimum percentage of current imbalance, by means of a combination of the loads between the three phases of the system, carried out by an optimization model in the Matlab computer program together with GAMS, in which the exhaustive search method is used. This optimization model allows to distribute the SPT in the three phases of the system (A, B, C) in a balanced way, minimizing the difference between the power assumed by each line, then, if the loads are distributed symmetrically, the same will happen with the currents in such a way that the objective of reducing the current balance percentage is fulfilled. To demonstrate the results obtained, the simulation is performed in the DIgSILENT PowerFactory computer program from which current values are obtained with the current connection of the SPT and compared with the values obtained after having applied the proposed reconnection

Helping future teachers to be effective learners: Providing in context learning support for first year teacher education students

    Get PDF
Future teachers need to be effective learners and also effective teachers of learning. However, many Teacher Education students are underprepared for university study and, as a consequence, may, not be effective learners. Thus, they need help to develop the cognitive, metacognitive, motivational and affective strategies which are needed for qualitv learning and their future teaching. Current theory and research suggests that such help is best provided by the discipline instructor in the context of regular teaching. In this paper we outline how students can be helped to be effective learners, describe how we provided such help to a group of first year Teacher Education students through a learning support program; report on the outcomes of the program from the perspective of the students and the instructor, using quantitative and qualitative data; and discuss implications for teaching and learning and Teacher Education programs

Beyond the Light-Cone Propagation of Relativistic Wavefunctions: Numerical Results

    Get PDF
It is known that relativistic wavefunctions formally propagate beyond the light cone when the propagator is limited to the positive energy sector. By construction, this is the case for solutions of the Salpeter (or relativistic Schrödinger) equation or for Klein–Gordon and Dirac wavefunctions defined in the Foldy–Wouthuysen representation. In this work, we quantitatively investigate the degree of non-causality for free propagation for different types of wavepackets that all initially have a compact spatial support. In the studied examples, we find that non-causality appears as a small transient effect that can in most cases be neglected. We display several numerical results and discuss the fundamental and practical consequences of our findings concerning this peculiar dynamical feature

Gain-Reconfigurable Hybrid Metal-Graphene Printed Yagi Antenna for Energy Harvesting Applications

    Get PDF
This paper presents a hybrid metal-graphene printed Yagi antenna with reconfigurable gain that operates in the 5.5-GHz band. The balun and the driven elements are made of copper, while the directors are made of graphene. The graphene acts as a tunable material in the design. By switching the conductivity of the graphene, it is achieved a similar effect to adding or subtracting directors in the antenna. Hence the gain of the printed Yagi can be easily controlled. This could be of special interest in RF energy harvesting in the design of reconfigurable harvesting elements.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech
