Non-minimally coupled dark matter: effective pressure and structure formation
We propose a phenomenological model in which a non-minimal coupling between
gravity and dark matter is present in order to address some of the apparent
small scales issues of \lcdm model. When described in a frame in which gravity
dynamics is given by the standard Einstein-Hilbert action, the non-minimal
coupling translates into an effective pressure for the dark matter component.
We consider some phenomenological examples and describe both background and
linear perturbations. We show that the presence of an effective pressure may
lead these scenarios to differ from \lcdm at the scales where the non-minimal
coupling (and therefore the pressure) is active. In particular two effects are
present: a pressure term for the dark matter component that is able to reduce
the growth of structures at galactic scales, possibly reconciling simulations
and observations; an effective interaction term between dark matter and baryons
that could explain observed correlations between the two components of the
cosmic fluid within Tully-Fisher analysis.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, references added. Published in JCA
Re-examining the relationship between audiometric profile and tinnitus pitch
Objective: We explored the relationship between audiogram shape and tinnitus pitch to answer questions arising from neurophysiological models of tinnitus: ‘Is the dominant tinnitus pitch associated with the edge of hearing loss?’ and ‘Is such a relationship more robust in people with narrow tinnitus bandwidth or steep sloping hearing loss?’ Design: A broken-stick fitting objectively quantified slope, degree and edge of hearing loss up to 16 kHz. Tinnitus pitch was characterized up to 12 kHz. We used correlation and multiple regression analyses for examining relationships with many potentially predictive audiometric variables. Study Sample: 67 people with chronic bilateral tinnitus (43 men and 24 women, aged from 22 to 81 years). Results: In this ample of 67 subjects correlation failed to reveal any relationship between the tinnitus pitch and the edge frequency. The tinnitus pitch generally fell within the area of hearing loss. The pitch of the tinnitus in a subset of subjects with a narrow tinnitus bandwidth (n = 23) was associated with the audiometric edge. Conclusions: Our findings concerning subjects with narrow tinnitus bandwidth suggest that this can be used as an a priori inclusion criterion. A large group of such subjects should be tested to confirm these results
Olber's Paradox for Superluminal Neutrinos: Constraining Extreme Neutrino Speeds at TeV-ZeV Energies with the Diffuse Neutrino Background
The only invariant speed in special relativity is c; therefore, if some
neutrinos travel at even tiny speeds above c, normal special relativity is
incomplete and any superluminal speed may be possible. I derive a limit on
superluminal neutrino speeds v >> c at high energies by noting that such speeds
would increase the size of the neutrino horizon. The increased volume of the
Universe visible leads to a brighter astrophysical neutrino background. The
nondetection of "guaranteed" neutrino backgrounds from star-forming galaxies
and ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) constrains v/c at TeV--ZeV energies.
I find that v/c <= 820 at 60 TeV from the nondetection of neutrinos from
star-forming galaxies. The nondetection of neutrinos from UHECRs constrains v/c
to be less than 2500 at 0.1 EeV in a pessimistic model and less than 4.6 at 4
EeV in an optimistic model. The UHECR neutrino background nondetection is
strongly inconsistent with a naive quadratic extrapolation of the OPERA results
to EeV energies. The limits apply subject to some caveats, particularly that
the expected pionic neutrino backgrounds exist and that neutrinos travel faster
than c when they pass the detector. They could be improved substantially as the
expected neutrino backgrounds are better understood and with new experimental
neutrino background limits. I also point out that extremely subluminal speeds
would result in a much smaller neutrino background intensity than expected.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, fixed titl

Structure Determination of Racemic Trichogin A IV Using Centrosimmetric Crystals
Direct methods of crystal structure solution are greatly facilitated in centrosymmetric space groups where the complexity of the phase-problem is reduced. For most peptides and proteins, crystallization in a centrosymmetric arrangement is precluded by an intrinsic dissymmetry due to the constituent chiral amino acid residues. The synthetic accessibility of peptide sequences containing amino acids of either chirality offers the possibility for co crystallization of racemic crystals. We report here the first use of such an approach for the de novo structure determination of a medium-sized molecule, trichogin A IV, which is a constituent of a fungal lipopeptaibol mixture possessing membrane-modifying properties of biological interest
