Thermodynamic Comparison and the Ideal Glass Transition of A Monatomic Systems Modeled as an Antiferromagnetic Ising Model on Husimi and Cubic Recursive Lattices of the Same Coordination Number
Two kinds of recursive lattices with the same coordination number but
different unit cells (2-D square and 3-D cube) are constructed and the
antiferromagnetic Ising model is solved exactly on them to study the stable and
metastable states. The Ising model with multi-particle interactions is designed
to represent a monatomic system or an alloy. Two solutions of the model exhibit
the crystallization of liquid, and the ideal glass transition of supercooled
liquid respectively. Based on the solutions, the thermodynamics on both
lattices was examined. In particular, the free energy, energy, and entropy of
the ideal glass, supercooled liquid, crystal, and liquid state of the model on
each lattice were calculated and compared with each other. Interactions between
particles farther away than the nearest neighbor distance are taken into
consideration. The two lattices show comparable properties on the transition
temperatures and the thermodynamic behaviors, which proves that both of them
are practical to describe the regular 3-D case, while the different effects of
the unit types are still obvious.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figure
Parity and Time Reversal in the Spin-Rotation Interaction
A recently reported discrepancy between experimental and theoretical values
of the muon's g-2 factor is interpreted as due to small violations of the
conservation of P and T in the spin-rotation coupling. The experiments place an
upper limit on these violations and on the weight change of spinning
gyroscopes.Comment: 3 page
Photon-Photon and Pomeron-Pomeron Processes in Peripheral Heavy Ion Collisions
We estimate the cross sections for the production of resonances, pion pairs
and a central cluster of hadrons in peripheral heavy-ion collisions through
two-photon and double-pomeron exchange, at energies that will be available at
RHIC and LHC. The effect of the impact parameter in the diffractive reactions
is introduced, and imposing the condition for realistic peripheral collisions
we verify that in the case of very heavy ions the pomeron-pomeron contribution
is indeed smaller than the electromagnetic one. However, they give a
non-negligible background in the collision of light ions. This diffractive
background will be more important at RHIC than at LHC.Comment: 22 pages, 1 Postscript figures, 4 tables, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Resonance- and Chaos-Assisted Tunneling
We consider dynamical tunneling between two symmetry-related regular islands
that are separated in phase space by a chaotic sea. Such tunneling processes
are dominantly governed by nonlinear resonances, which induce a coupling
mechanism between ``regular'' quantum states within and ``chaotic'' states
outside the islands. By means of a random matrix ansatz for the chaotic part of
the Hamiltonian, one can show that the corresponding coupling matrix element
directly determines the level splitting between the symmetric and the
antisymmetric eigenstates of the pair of islands. We show in detail how this
matrix element can be expressed in terms of elementary classical quantities
that are associated with the resonance. The validity of this theory is
demonstrated with the kicked Harper model.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure
Spin-gravity coupling and gravity-induced quantum phases
External gravitational fields induce phase factors in the wave functions of
particles. The phases are exact to first order in the background gravitational
field, are manifestly covariant and gauge invariant and provide a useful tool
for the study of spin-gravity coupling and of the optics of particles in
gravitational or inertial fields. We discuss the role that spin-gravity
coupling plays in particular problems.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur
