Crystallographic structure of ultrathin Fe films on Cu(100)
We report bcc-like crystal structures in 2-4 ML Fe films grown on fcc Cu(100)
using scanning tunneling microscopy. The local bcc structure provides a
straightforward explanation for their frequently reported outstanding magnetic
properties, i.e., ferromagnetic ordering in all layers with a Curie temperature
above 300 K. The non-pseudomorphic structure, which becomes pseudomorphic above
4 ML film thickness is unexpected in terms of conventional rules of thin film
growth and stresses the importance of finite thickness effects in ferromagnetic
ultrathin films.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTeX/LaTeX2.0
Serum dioxin concentrations and endometriosis: a cohort study in Seveso, Italy.
Dioxin, a ubiquitous contaminant of industrial combustion processes including medical waste incineration, has been implicated in the etiology of endometriosis in animals. We sought to determine whether dioxin exposure is associated with endometriosis in humans. We conducted a population-based historical cohort study 20 years after the 1976 factory explosion in Seveso, Italy, which resulted in the highest known population exposure to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-(italic)p(/italic)-dioxin (TCDD). Participants were 601 female residents of the Seveso area who were (3/4) 30 years old in 1976 and had adequate stored sera. Endometriosis disease status was defined by pelvic surgery, current transvaginal ultrasound, pelvic examination, and interview (for history of infertility and pelvic pain). "Cases" were women who had surgically confirmed disease or an ultrasound consistent with endometriosis. "Nondiseased" women had surgery with no evidence of endometriosis or no signs or symptoms. Other women had uncertain status. To assess TCDD exposure, individual levels of TCDD were measured in stored sera collected soon after the accident. We identified 19 women with endometriosis and 277 nondiseased women. The relative risk ratios (RRRs) for women with serum TCDD levels of 20.1-100 ppt and >100 ppt were 1.2 [90% confidence interval (CI) = 0.3-4.5] and 2.1 (90% CI = 0.5-8.0), respectively, relative to women with TCDD levels (3/4) 20 ppt. Tests for trend using the above exposure categories and continuous log TCDD were nonsignificant. In conclusion, we report a doubled, nonsignificant risk for endometriosis among women with serum TCDD levels of 100 ppt or higher, but no clear dose response. Unavoidable disease misclassification in a population-based study may have led to an underestimate of the true risk of endometriosis
"Cold Melting" of Invar Alloys
An anomalously strong volume magnetostriction in Invars may lead to a
situation when at low temperatures the dislocation free energy becomes negative
and a multiple generation of dislocations becomes possible. This generation
induces a first order phase transition from the FCC crystalline to an amorphous
state, and may be called "cold melting". The possibility of the cold melting in
Invars is connected with the fact that the exchange energy contribution into
the dislocation self energy in Invars is strongly enhanced, as compared to
conventional ferromagnetics, due to anomalously strong volume magnetostriction.
The possible candidate, where this effect can be observed, is a FePt disordered
Invar alloy in which the volume magnetostriction is especially large

Predictors of Serum Chlorinated Pesticide Concentrations among Prepubertal Russian Boys
Background: Few studies have evaluated predictors of childhood exposure to organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), a class of lipophilic persistent chemicals. Objectives: Our goal was to identify predictors of serum OCP concentrations—hexachlorobenzene (HCB), β-hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH), and p,p-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p´-DDE)—among boys in Chapaevsk, Russia. Methods: Between 2003 and 2005, 499 boys 8–9 years of age were recruited in a prospective cohort. The initial study visit included a physical examination; blood collection; health, lifestyle, and food-frequency questionnaires; and determination of residential distance from a local factory complex that produced HCB and β-HCH. Fasting serum samples were analyzed for OCPs at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. General linear regression models were used to identify predictors of the boys’ serum HCB, β-HCH, and p,p´-DDE concentrations. Results: Among 355 boys with OCP measurements, median serum HCB, β-HCH, and p,p´-DDE concentrations were 158, 167, and 284 ng/g lipid, respectively. Lower body mass index, longer breastfeeding duration, and local dairy consumption were associated with higher concentrations of OCPs. Boys who lived 3 years in Chapaevsk predicted higher β-HCH concentrations, and having parents who lacked a high school education predicted higher p,p´-DDE concentrations. Conclusions: Among this cohort of prepubertal Russian boys, predictors of serum OCPs included consumption of local dairy products, longer local residence, and residential proximity to the local factory complex. Genetic Modification of the Association between Peripubertal Dioxin Exposure and Pubertal Onset in a Cohort of Russian Boys
Background: Exposure to dioxins has been associated with delayed pubertal onset in both epidemiologic and animal studies. Whether genetic polymorphisms may modify this association is currently unknown. Identifying such genes could provide insight into mechanistic pathways. This is one of the first studies to assess genetic susceptibility to dioxins. Objectives: We evaluated whether common polymorphisms in genes affecting either molecular responses to dioxin exposure or pubertal onset influence the association between peripubertal serum dioxin concentration and male pubertal onset. Methods: In this prospective cohort of Russian adolescent boys (n = 392), we assessed gene–environment interactions for 337 tagging single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 46 candidate genes and two intergenic regions. Dioxins were measured in the boys’ serum at age 8–9 years. Pubertal onset was based on testicular volume and on genitalia staging. Statistical approaches for controlling for multiple testing were used, both with and without prescreening for marginal genetic associations. Results: After accounting for multiple testing, two tag SNPs in the glucocorticoid receptor (GR/NR3C1) gene and one in the estrogen receptor-α (ESR1) gene were significant (q < 0.2) modifiers of the association between peripubertal serum dioxin concentration and male pubertal onset defined by genitalia staging, although not by testicular volume. The results were sensitive to whether multiple comparison adjustment was applied to all gene–environment tests or only to those with marginal genetic associations. Conclusions: Common genetic polymorphisms in the glucocorticoid receptor and estrogen receptor-α genes may modify the association between peripubertal serum dioxin concentration and pubertal onset. Further studies are warranted to confirm these findings
Metal alloys, matrix inclusions and manufacturing techniques of Moinhos de Golas collection (North Portugal): a study by micro-EDXRF, SEM–EDS, optical microscopy and X-ray radiography
"Article:820"A collection of 35 metallic artefacts comprising
various typologies, some of which can be attributed to the
Bronze Age and others to later periods, were studied to
provide detailed information on elemental composition,
manufacturing techniques and preservation state. Elemental
analysis by micro-EDXRF and SEM–EDS was performed
to investigate the use of different alloys and to
study the presence of microstructural heterogeneities, as
inclusions. X-ray radiography, optical microscopy and
SEM–EDS were used to investigate manufacturing techniques
and degradation features. Results showed that most
of the artefacts were produced in a binary bronze alloy
(Cu–Sn) with 10–15 wt% Sn and a low concentration of
impurities. Other artefacts were produced in copper or in
brass, the latest with varying contents of Zn, Sn and Pb. A
variety of inclusions in the metal matrices were also found,
some related to specific types of alloys, as (Cu–Ni)S2 in
coppers, or ZnS in brasses. Microstructural observations
revealed that the majority of the artefacts were subjected to
cycles of thermomechanical processing after casting, being
evident that among some artefacts different parts were
subjected to distinct treatments. The radiographic images
revealed structural heterogeneities related to local corrosion
processes and fissures that seem to have developed in
wear-tension zones, as in the handle of some daggers.
Radiographic images were also useful to detect the use of
different materials in one particular brass artefact, revealing
the presence of a possible Cu–Sn solder. This work was funded by FEDER funds through
