Why Have Youth from Different Neighborhoods of Durban, South Africa Developed Different Opinions Regarding the Role and Importance of Voting in the Current State of South African Democracy?
The field of political science has become increasingly interested in the electoral participatory habits of young people in recent decades, and in post-apartheid South Africa more specifically in light of the recent and ongoing #feesmustfall movement within the nation\u27s tertiary institutions. Since 1994, South Africa has made a great deal of progress towards dismantling the apartheid system; however, vast inequalities remain and many, mostly black African communities have not yet reaped the rewards of a democratic South Africa. Using qualitative data gathered from three focus groups, this paper examines why youth from black African township communities of Durban, South Africa view electoral participation more negatively and with greater skepticism than youth living in historically white communities. Two independent variables gleaned from the literature are used to explain these different perspectives: the quality of one\u27s civic education and persisting racial socioeconomic inequality
Shock, but no Shift: Hospitals\u27 Responses to Changes in Patient Insurance Mix
Medicaid reimburses healthcare providers for services at a lower rate than any other type of insurance coverage. To account for the burden of treating Medicaid patients, providers claim that they must cost-shift by raising the rates of individuals covered by private insurance. Previous investigations of cost-shifting has produced mixed results. In this paper, I exploit a disabled Medicaid expansion where crowd-out was complete to investigate cost-shifting. I find that hospitals reduce the charge rates of the privately insured. Given that Medicaid is expanding in several states under the Affordable Care Act, these results may alleviate cost-shifting concerns of the reform
Medicaid Expansions for the Working Age Disabled: Revisiting the Crowd-out of Private Health Insurance
Disabled individuals under 65 years old account for 15% of Medicaid recipients but half of all Medicaid spending. Despite their large cost, few studies have investigated the effects of Medicaid expansions for disabled individuals on insurance coverage and crowd-out of private insurance. Using an eligibility expansion that allowed states to provide Medicaid to disabled individuals with incomes less than 100% of the federal poverty level, I address these issues. Crowd-out estimates range from 49% using an ordinary least squares procedure to 100% using two-stage least-squares analysis. This potentially large degree of crowd-out could have fiscal implications for the Affordable Care Act which has greatly expanded Medicaid eligibility in 2014

Transition metal oxides using quantum Monte Carlo
The transition metal-oxygen bond appears prominently throughout chemistry and
solid-state physics. Many materials, from biomolecules to ferroelectrics to the
components of supernova remnants contain this bond in some form. Many of these
materials' properties strongly depend on fine details of the TM-O bond and
intricate correlation effects, which make accurate calculations of their
properties very challenging. We present quantum Monte Carlo, an explicitly
correlated class of methods, to improve the accuracy of electronic structure
calculations over more traditional methods like density functional theory. We
find that unlike s-p type bonding, the amount of hybridization of the d-p bond

Exclusive neutrino-production of a charmed meson
We calculate the leading order in QCD amplitude for exclusive
neutrino and antineutrino production of a pseudoscalar charmed meson on an
unpolarized nucleon. We work in the framework of the collinear QCD approach
where generalized parton distributions (GPDs) factorize from perturbatively
calculable coefficient functions. We include both terms in the
coefficient functions and mass term contributions in the heavy meson
distribution amplitudes. We emphasize the sensitivity of specific observables
