Light Cone Sum Rules for gamma* N -> Delta Transition Form Factors
A theoretical framework is suggested for the calculation of gamma* N -> Delta
transition form factors using the light-cone sum rule approach. Leading-order
sum rules are derived and compared with the existing experimental data. We find
that the transition form factors in a several GeV region are dominated by the
``soft'' contributions that can be thought of as overlap integrals of the
valence components of the hadron wave functions. The ``minus'' components of
the quark fields contribute significantly to the result, which can be

Magnetic properties of Co doped Nb clusters
From magnetic deflection experiments on isolated Co doped Nb clusters we made
the interesting observation of some clusters being magnetic, while others
appear to be non-magnetic. There are in principle two explanations for this
behavior. Either the local moment at the Co site is completely quenched or it
is screened by the delocalized electrons of the cluster, i.e. the Kondo effect.
In order to reveal the physical origin, we conducted a combined theoretical and
experimental investigation. First, we established the ground state geometry of
the clusters by comparing the experimental vibrational spectra with those
obtained from a density functional theory study. Then, we performed an analyses
based on the Anderson impurity model. It appears that the non-magnetic clusters
are due to a complete quenching of the local Co moment and not due to the Kondo
effect. In addition, the magnetic behavior of the clusters can be understood
from an inspection of their electronic structure. Here magnetism is favored
when the effective hybridization around the chemical potential is small, while
the absence of magnetism is signalled by a large effective hybridization around

Diagnostic utility and validity of 1,2-o-dilauryl-rac-glycero-3-glutaric acid-(6'-methylresorufin) ester (DGGR) lipase activity in horses with colic.
Little is known about the clinical usefulness in horses of the 1,2-o-dilauryl-rac-glycero-3-glutaric acid-(6'-methylresorufin) ester (DGGR) lipase assay, a biomarker used in other species for the detection of pancreatitis. The main objectives of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of increased DGGR-lipase activity in horses with signs of colic and investigate its association with, and validity to diagnose, underlying gastrointestinal diseases, treatment method (medical or surgical), and outcome (survival or non-survival). Clinical data from 192 horses presented for colic to a teaching hospital were analysed retrospectively. DGGR-lipase activity was measured in frozen plasma collected within 24h of presentation. Non-parametric tests and Chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests were used to evaluate differences and associations between DGGR-lipase activity and continuous and categorical variables or outcomes, respectively. Measures of the validity of DGGR-lipase as a diagnostic test were also calculated. Increased DGGR-lipase activity above published reference limits was demonstrated in 30.2% of horses with signs of colic, and was above 2x the upper reference limit (URL) in 15.6%. The median DGGR-lipase activity in horses with large bowel displacement or torsion was significantly higher than the median activity for large bowel impaction and for gastric impaction, dilation, or ulceration. DGGR-lipase activity >2x URL was significantly associated with surgical treatment, strangulating disease, and non-survival. However, as a diagnostic or screening test for these target outcomes, DGGR-lipase activity was poor to fair consequent to poor sensitivity, poor negative likelihood ratio, and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, with optimal cut-offs based on the Youden Index, within reference limits
Why are women still leaving academic medicine? A qualitative study within a London Medical School
Objectives: To identify factors that influenced women who chose to leave academic medicine. Design and main outcome measures: Independent consultants led a focus group of women in medicine who had left academia after completion of their postgraduate research degree at Imperial College London Faculty of Medicine. Thematic analysis was performed on the transcribed conversations. Participants and setting: Nine women physicians who completed a postgraduate degree (MD or PhD) at a large London Medical School and Academic Health Sciences Centre, Imperial College London, but did not go on to pursue a career in academic medicine. Results: Influences to leave clinical academia were summarised under eight themes—career intentions, supervisor support, institutional human resources support, inclusivity, work–life balance, expectations, mentors and role models, and pregnancy and maternity leave. Conclusion: The women in our focus group reported several factors contributing to their decision to leave clinical academia, which included lack of mentoring tailored to specific needs, low levels of acceptance for flexible working to help meet parental responsibilities and perceived explicit gender biases. We summarise the multiple targeted strategies that Imperial College London has implemented to promote retention of women in academic medicine, although more research needs to be done to ascertain the most effective interventions
Quark-gluonium content of the scalar-isoscalar states f_0(980), f_0(1300), f_0(1500), f_0(1750), f_0(1420 ^{+150}_{- 70}) from hadronic decays
On the basis of the decay couplings f_0 -> \pi\pi, K\bar K, \eta\eta,
\eta\eta', which had been found before, in the study of analytical
(IJ^{PC}=00^{++})-amplitude in the mass range 450-1900 MeV, we analyse the
quark-gluonium content of resonances f_0(980), f_0(1300), f_0(1500), f_0(1750)
and the broad state f_0(1420 ^{+ 150}_{-70}). The K-matrix technique used in
the analysis makes it possible to evaluate the quark-gluonium content both for
the states with switched-off decay channels (bare states, f^{bare}_0) and the
real resonances. We observe significant change of the quark-gluonium
composition in the evolution from bare states to real resonances, that is due
to the mixing of states in the transitions f_0(m_1)-> real mesons-> f_0(m_2)
responsible for the decay processes as well. For the f_0(980), the analysis
confirmed the dominance of q\bar q component thus proving the n\bar n/s\bar s
composition found in the study of the radiative decays. For the mesons
f_0(1300), f_0(1500) and f_0(1750), the hadronic decays do not allow one to
determine uniquely the n\bar n, s\bar s and gluonium components providing
relative pecentage only. The analysis shows that the broad state f_0(1420 ^{+
150}_{-70}) can mix with the flavour singlet q\bar q component only, that is
consistent with gluonium origin of the broad resonance.Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX, 10 PostScript figures, epsfig.st
Coalescing binary systems of compact objects: Dynamics of angular momenta
The end state of a coalescing binary of compact objects depends strongly on
the final total mass M and angular momentum J. Since gravitational radiation
emission causes a slow evolution of the binary system through quasi-circular
orbits down to the innermost stable one, in this paper we examine the
corresponding behavior of the ratio J/M^2 which must be less than 1(G/c) or
about 0.7(G/c) for the formation of a black hole or a neutron star
respectively. The results show cases for which, at the end of the inspiral
phase, the conditions for black hole or neutron star formation are not
satisfied. The inclusion of spin effects leads us to a study of precession
equations valid also for the calculation of gravitational waveforms.Comment: 22 pages, AASTeX and 13 figures in PostScrip
A Rotating Collapsar and Possible Interpretation of the LSD Neutrino Signal from SN 1987A
We consider an improved rotational mechanism of the explosion of a collapsing
supernova. We show that this mechanism leads to two-stage collapse with a phase
difference of \sim 5 h. Based on this model, we attempt a new interpretation of
the events in underground neutrino detectors on February 23, 1987, related to

Experimental Bounds on Classical Random Field Theories
Alternative theories to quantum mechanics motivate important fundamental
tests of our understanding and descriptions of the smallest physical systems.
Here, using spontaneous parametric downconversion as a heralded single-photon
source, we place experimental limits on a class of alternative theories,
consisting of classical field theories which result in power-dependent
normalized correlation functions. In addition, we compare our results with
standard quantum mechanical interpretations of our spontaneous parametric
downconversion source over an order of magnitude in intensity. Our data match
the quantum mechanical expectations, and do not show a statistically
significant dependence on power, limiting on quantum mechanics alternatives
which require power-dependent autocorrelation functions.Comment: 11pages, 2 figure
