    Gluino Contribution to the 3-loop QCD beta function in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

    We deduce the gluino contribution to the three-loop QCD \beta function within the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) from its standard QCD expression. The result is a first step in the computation of the full MSSM three-loop \beta function. In addition, in the case of a light gluino it provides the strong three-loop SUSY correction to the extrapolation of the strong coupling constant from the low energy regime to the Z region and up to the squark threshold.Comment: 11 pages, RevTex, 4 Postscript figur

    Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of atazanavir in pregnancy

    Purpose of the study: Pregnant women experience physiological changes during pregnancy resulting in clinically significant alterations in antiretroviral pharmacokinetics (PK). Therefore, achieving and maintaining optimal plasma concentrations of antiretroviral drugs is essential for maternal health and minimising the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The aim of this study is to describe atazanavir/ritonavir (ATV/r) PK during pregnancy. Methods: Pregnant HIV-positive women received ATV/r as part of their routine pre-natal care. Demographic and clinical data were collected, and ATV plasma concentrations [ATV] were determined in the first (T1), second (T2) and third (T3) trimester using HPLC-MS/MS (LLQ=0.05 µg/mL). Postpartum (PP) sampling was performed where applicable. Antepartum (AP) and PP PK parameters were compared using a one-way ANOVA. Summary of results: From January 2007, 44 women (37 black African) were enrolled in the study. All received ATV/r at a standard dose of 1 tablet once daily (300/100 mg od). 24 women were receiving ART prior to pregnancy, and 20 women initiated ATV/r during pregnancy. Median (range) gestation at treatment initiation in these patients was 23.5 weeks (7–35). At the time nearest to delivery 31 patients had an undetectable plasma viral load (pVL), 6 patients had detectable pVL and 2 were unavailable. [ATV] were determined in 11/44 (T1); 25/44 (T2); 35/44 (T3) and 28/44 (PP) patients. Time of TDM sampling, gestation time and [ATV] (geometric mean; 95% CI) are given in the Table. 6 patients were either below or approaching the ATV MEC (0.15 µg/mL) during pregnancy; of these, 4/6 achieved undetectable pVL at the time of delivery (1=pVL of 291 copies/mL; 1 unavailable). [ATV] were significantly lower at T2/T3 relative to T1/PP. Equally, in a paired analysis of 28 patients (T2/T3 vs. PP), [ATV] were significantly reduced at T2/T3 (P=0.003). Conclusions: This study represents one of the larger cohorts of women undergoing TDM for ATV in pregnancy. Lower [ATV] were seen in T2 and T3 when compared to T1. However, such findings were not associated with viral breakthrough or HIV transmissions. Nonetheless, careful monitoring of women in pregnancy is required, and if there is concern for inadequate levels, dose adjustment of ATV upward from 300 mg to 400 mg may be an option

    Properties of recent IBAD-MOCVD Coated Conductors relevant to their high field, low temperature magnet use

    BaZrO3 (BZO) nanorods are now incorporated into production IBAD-MOCVD coated conductors. Here we compare several examples of both BZO-free and BZO-containing coated conductors using critical current (Ic) characterizations at 4.2 K over their full angular range up to fields of 31 T. We find that BZO nanorods do not produce any c-axis distortion of the critical current density Jc(theta) curve at 4.2 K at any field, but also that pinning is nevertheless strongly enhanced compared to the non-BZO conductors. We also find that the tendency of the ab-plane Jc(theta) peak to become cusp-like is moderated by BZO and we define a new figure of merit that may be helpful for magnet design - the OADI (Off-Axis Double Ic), which clearly shows that BZO broadens the ab-plane peak and thus raises Jc 5-30{\deg} away from the tape plane, where the most critical approach to Ic occurs in many coil designs. We describe some experimental procedures that may make critical current Ic tests of these very high current tapes more tractable at 4.2 K, where Ic exceeds 1000 A even for 4 mm wide tape with only 1 micron thickness of superconductor. A positive conclusion is that BZO is very beneficial for the Jc characteristics at 4.2 K, just as it is at higher temperatures, where the correlated c-axis pinning effects of the nanorods are much more obvious

    Maize Leaf Appearance Rates: A Synthesis From the United States Corn Belt

    The relationship between collared leaf number and growing degree days (GDD) is crucial for predicting maize phenology. Biophysical crop models convert GDD accumulation to leaf numbers by using a constant parameter termed phyllochron (°C-day leaf−1) or leaf appearance rate (LAR; leaf oC-day−1). However, such important parameter values are rarely estimated for modern maize hybrids. To fill this gap, we sourced and analyzed experimental datasets from the United States Corn Belt with the objective to (i) determine phyllochron values for two types of models: linear (1-parameter) and bilinear (3-parameters; phase I and II phyllochron, and transition point) and (ii) explore whether environmental factors such as photoperiod and radiation, and physiological variables such as plant growth rate can explain variability in phyllochron and improve predictability of maize phenology. The datasets included different locations (latitudes between 48° N and 41° N), years (2009–2019), hybrids, and management settings. Results indicated that the bilinear model represented the leaf number vs. GDD relationship more accurately than the linear model (R2 = 0.99 vs. 0.95, n = 4,694). Across datasets, first phase phyllochron, transition leaf number, and second phase phyllochron averaged 57.9 ± 7.5°C-day, 9.8 ± 1.2 leaves, and 30.9 ± 5.7°C-day, respectively. Correlation analysis revealed that radiation from the V3 to the V9 developmental stages had a positive relationship with phyllochron (r = 0.69), while photoperiod was positively related to days to flowering or total leaf number (r = 0.89). Additionally, a positive nonlinear relationship between maize LAR and plant growth rate was found. Present findings provide important parameter values for calibration and optimization of maize crop models in the United States Corn Belt, as well as new insights to enhance mechanisms in crop models

    Hot isostatic pressing of powder in tube MgB2 wires

    The critical current density (Jc) of hot isostatic pressed (HIPed) MgB2 wires, measured by d.c. transport and magnetization, is compared with that of similar wires annealed at ambient pressure. The HIPed wires have a higher Jc than the annealed wires, especially at high temperatures and magnetic fields, and higher irreversibility field (Hirr). The HIPed wires are promising for applications, with Jc>106 A/cm2 at 5 K and zero field and >104 A/cm2 at 1.5 T and 26.5 K, and Hirr ~ 17 T at 4 K. The improvement is attributed to a high density of structural defects, which are the likely source of vortex pinning. These defects, observed by transmission electron microscopy, include small angle twisting, tilting, and bending boundaries, resulting in the formation of sub-grains within MgB2 crystallites.Comment: 13 pages,3 figure

    Final results of the EDELWEISS-II WIMP search using a 4-kg array of cryogenic germanium detectors with interleaved electrodes

    The EDELWEISS-II collaboration has completed a direct search for WIMP dark matter with an array of ten 400-g cryogenic germanium detectors in operation at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane. The combined use of thermal phonon sensors and charge collection electrodes with an interleaved geometry enables the efficient rejection of gamma-induced radioactivity as well as near-surface interactions. A total effective exposure of 384 kg.d has been achieved, mostly coming from fourteen months of continuous operation. Five nuclear recoil candidates are observed above 20 keV, while the estimated background is 3.0 events. The result is interpreted in terms of limits on the cross-section of spin-independent interactions of WIMPs and nucleons. A cross-section of 4.4x10^-8 pb is excluded at 90%CL for a WIMP mass of 85 GeV.
