A Search for CO in the Local Group Dwarf Irregular Galaxy WLM
We present 12CO J = 1-0 and J = 2-1 observations of the low metallicity (12 +
log(O/H) = 7.74) Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy WLM made with the 15 m SEST
and 14 m FCRAO telescopes. Despite the presence a number of HII regions, we
find no CO emission. We obtain low upper limits on the integrated intensity
(I(CO) >= 0.18 K km/s for CO (1-0)). The non-detection is consistent with the
result of Taylor, Kobulnicky and Skillman (1998), that dwarf galaxies below a
metallicity of ~ 7.9 are not detected in CO emission. WLM shows that this trend
continues for low metallicity galaxies even as their metallicities approach
7.9. These results are consistent with the models of the metal poor ISM by
Norman and Spaans (1997). By comparing our CO data with observations of star

Hole on a stripe in a spinless fermion model
In the spinless fermion model on a square lattice with infinite
nearest-neighbor repulsion, holes doped into the half-filled ordered state form
stripes which, at low doping, are stable against phase separation into an
ordered state and a hole-rich metal. Here we consider transport of additional
holes along these stripes. The motion of a single hole on a stripe is mapped to
a one-dimensional problem, a variational wavefunction is constructed and the
energy spectrum is calculated and compared to energies obtained by exact

Predicting the On-Study Relapse Rate for Multiple Sclerosis Patients in Clinical Trials
Background: The annual relapse rate has been commonly used as a primary efficacy endpoint in phase III multiple sclerosis (MS) clinical trials. The aim of this study was to determine the relative contribution of different possible prognostic factors available at baseline to the on-study relapse rate in MS. Methods: A total of 821 patients from the placebo arms of the Sylvia Lawry Centre for Multiple Sclerosis Research (SLCMSR) database were available for this analysis. The univariate relationships between on-study relapse rate and the baseline demographic, clinical, and MRI-based predictors were assessed. The multiple relationships were then examined using a Poisson regression model. Two predictor subsets were selected. Subset 1 included age at disease onset, disease duration, gender, Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) at baseline, number of relapses in the last 24 months prior to baseline, and the disease course (RR and SP). Subset 2 consisted of Subset 1 plus gadolinium enhancement status in MRI. The number of patients for developing the models with no missing values was 727 for Subset 1 and 306 for Subset 2. Results:The univariate relationships show that the on-study relapse rate was higher for younger and for female patients, for RR patients than for SP patients, and for patients with positive enhancement status at entry (Wilcoxon test, p<0.05). A higher on-study relapse rate was associated with a shorter disease duration, lower entry EDSS, more pre-study relapses and more enhancing lesions in T1 at entry. The fitted Poisson model shows that disease duration (estimate=-0.02) and previous relapse number (estimate=0.59 for 1, 0.91 for 2 and 1.45 for 3 or more relapses vs 0 relapse) remain. We were able to confirm these findings in a second, independent dataset. Conclusions: The relapse number prior to entry into clinical trials together with disease duration are the best predictors for the on-study relapse rate. Disease course and gadolinium enhancement status, given the other covariates, have no significant influence on the on-study relapse rate
Efficient approximations of neutrino physics for three-dimensional simulations of stellar core collapse
Neutrino transport in spherically symmetric models of stellar core collapse
and bounce has achieved a technically complete level, rewarded by the agreement
among independent groups that a multi-dimensional treatment of the
fluid-instabilities in the post-bounce phase is indispensable to model
supernova explosions. While much effort is required to develop a reliable
neutrino transport technique in axisymmetry, we explore neutrino physics
approximations and parameterizations for an efficient three-dimensional
simulation of the fluid-instabilities in the shock-heated matter that
accumulates between the accretion shock and the protoneutron star. We
demonstrate the reliability of a simple parameterization scheme in the collapse
phase and extend our 3D magneto-hydrodynamical collapse simulations to a
preliminary postbounce evolution. The growth of magnetic fields is

Multiferroicity in the frustrated spinel cuprate GeCuO
Different from other magnetically frustrated spinel systems,
GeCuO is a strongly tetragonal distorted spinel cuprate in which
edge-sharing CuO ribbons are running along alternating directions
perpendicular to the -axis. Here, GeCuO samples of high quality
were prepared via high pressure synthesis (at 4 GPa) and the corresponding
magnetic and dielectric properties were investigated. For the first time, we
observed a ferroelectric polarization emerging at T 33~K. Although
the ferroelectric polarization is weak in GeCuO (
0.2C/m), the existence of spin-induced multiferroicity provides a
strong constraint on the possible ground state magnetic structures and/or the

Covalent bonding and hybridization effects in the corundum-type transition-metal oxides V2O3 and Ti2O3
The electronic structure of the corundum-type transition-metal oxides V2O3
and Ti2O3 is studied by means of the augmented spherical wave method, based on
density-functional theory and the local density approximation. Comparing the
results for the vanadate and the titanate allows us to understand the peculiar
shape of the metal 3d a_{1g} density of states, which is present in both
compounds. The a_{1g} states are subject to pronounced bonding-antibonding
splitting due to metal-metal overlap along the c-axis of the corundum
structure. However, the corresponding partial density of states is strongly
asymmetric with considerably more weight on the high energy branch. We argue
that this asymmetry is due to an unexpected broadening of the bonding a_{1g}
states, which is caused by hybridization with the e_g^{pi} bands. In contrast,
the antibonding a_{1g} states display no such hybridization and form a sharp
peak. Our results shed new light on the role of the a_{1g} orbitals for the
metal-insulator transitions of V2O3. In particular, due to a_{1g} - e_g^{pi}
hybridization, an interpretation in terms of molecular orbital singlet states
on the metal-metal pairs along the c-axis is not an adequate description.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, more information at

Dynamics of African swine fever virus shedding and excretion in domestic pigs infected by intramuscular inoculation and contact transmission
African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a highly virulent swine pathogen that has spread across Eastern Europe since 2007 and for which there is no effective vaccine or treatment available. The dynamics of shedding and excretion is not well known for this currently circulating ASFV strain. Therefore, susceptible pigs were exposed to pigs intramuscularly infected with the Georgia 2007/1 ASFV strain to measure those dynamics through within- and between-pen transmission scenarios. Blood, oral, nasal and rectal fluid samples were tested for the presence of ASFV by virus titration (VT) and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Serum was tested for the presence of ASFV-specific antibodies. Both intramuscular inoculation and contact transmission resulted in development of acute disease in all pigs although the experiments indicated that the pathogenesis of the disease might be different, depending on the route of infection. Infectious ASFV was first isolated in blood among the inoculated pigs by day 3, and then chronologically among the direct and indirect contact pigs, by day 10 and 13, respectively. Close to the onset of clinical signs, higher ASFV titres were found in blood compared with nasal and rectal fluid samples among all pigs. No infectious ASFV was isolated in oral fluid samples although ASFV genome copies were detected. Only one animal developed antibodies starting after 12 days post-inoculation. The results provide quantitative data on shedding and excretion of the Georgia 2007/1 ASFV strain among domestic pigs and suggest a limited potential of this isolate to cause persistent infection
Development of strategies to improve quality and safety and reduce cost of production in organic and ‘low input‘ crop production systems
The overall aims of organic and low input crop production include the economically viable and environmentally sound production of high quality food and feed. Technological bottlenecks in such systems include insufficient and instable yields and in some instances unsatisfactory processing, sensory and/or nutritional quality of the final product. Recently, concerns have also been raised that the intensive use of manures may lead to increased risk for contamination of food by enteropathogenic micro-organisms. Crop production in low input systems is based on key pillars, i.e. (i) a fertile soil which provides sufficient capacity to allow for plant growth while preventing soil-borne diseases, (ii) high quality, disease-free seeds and plant material, (iii) a crop-specific soil fertility management to provide sufficient nutrients for optimum plant growth, and (iv) adequate crop protection techniques to prevent damage due to noxious organisms. In the QLIF project we develop improved component strategies to overcome technological bottlenecks in annual (wheat, lettuce, tomato) and perennial (apple) crop production systems.
