    The Influence of Reservoir Basin Morphometry on Phytoplankton Community Structure

    The research protocol was designed to compare three reservoirs with similar physical environments but different morphometry. Three reservoirs on the western edge of the Ozark uplift were selected because of their similar substrate and climatic condition. The reservoirs primarily differed in morphometry. Two of the reservoirs were of identical size, Bob Kidd and Prairie Groves Lakes, but of different configuration, semicircular and linear, respectively. The bifurcated lake, Lincoln Lake, was of smaller size. Each lake is dimictic. Each of the lakes were nitrate-N limited while soluble reactive phosphorus-P is available and not restricting the growth of phytoplankton. Although the pattern of nutrient utilization was similar among the nutrient concentrations varied. Phytoplankton succession was alike in each reservoir but differed in quantity

The purposes of thlc dissertation is to present Schaff's con¬ cept of the Church as expressed in his early works written during his pro¬ fessorship at the Mercersburg Seminary, and to describe his role in the con¬ troversy which marred the harmony of the German Reformed Church in the United States during most of the last century.As In Schaff's day, so in ours, we too are concerned with the doctrine of the Church. Thus, this study is relevant not only to the current theological discussions between the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches who, in 1937, organically merged to form the United Church of Christ in America, but it also impinges upon the important issues underlying the 'church question' which is currently being debated by the members of the World Council of Churches. In this sense, we can say that the subject matter of this dissertation is relevant to the whole ecumenical movement. While not suggesting that we can live in the twentieth century with a nineteenth century outlook, it is nevertheless the conviction of the writer that the voice of Philip Schaff has much to say to those of a later generation, who, lire Schaff, also look forward to the time when "they all shall be one.

    The Illinois River Basin has experienced water quality impairment from non-point source pollution for many years. This fact was well documented in the State of Arkansas\u27 Water Quality Assessment report, the Soil Conservation Service River Basin Study, and several University of Arkansas studies. Thirty-seven sub-watersheds have been identified by the SCS in the Arkansas portion of the Illinois River basin. In the Arkansas portion of the Basin, the Illinois River, Evansville Creek, Baron Fork, Cincinnati Creek, Muddy Fork, Moores Creek, Clear Creek, Osage Creek and Flint Creek were all classified as not supporting their designated use as primary contact recreation streams. The identified causes of the impairment were: sediment, bacteria and nutrients. In 1997, the University of Arkansas completed a project that estimated the phosphorus loading from each of the thirty-seven sub-watersheds. This project also prioritized watersheds for implementation work based on phosphorus loads, nitrogen loads and total suspended solids loads per unit area. The thirty-seven sub-watersheds were grouped into Low (16), Medium (10) and High (11) categories based on phosphorus loadings. The selection of a sub-watershed for targeted intensive voluntary BMP implementation was based on the following criteria: a) the sub-watershed had to be above the current median value for phosphorus loading, b) there would be no sewage treatment plant in the sub-watershed, and c) land user interest. The Upper Ballard Creek watershed met all these requirements. The watershed covers 6700 hectares. The creek is listed in the High category with a unit area loading of 1.75 kg. per hectare per year. The median value for the thirty-seven watersheds was 0.73 kg. per hectare per year

    Water Quality Sampling, Analysis and Annual Load Determinations for TSS, Nitrogen and Phosphorus at the Washington County Road 195 Bridge on the West Fork of the White River, 2004 Annual Report

    A water quality sampling station was installed at the Washington County road 195 bridge on the West Fork of the White River just above the confluence of the three main forks of the Upper White River in December 2001. The Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) was approved by EPA Region six on March 2002 and sampling was begun at that time. This station is coordinated with a USGS gauging station at the same location. This station was instrumented to collect samples at sufficient intervals across the hydrograph to accurately estimate the flux of total suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus into the upper end of Beaver Lake from the West Fork of the White River. The West Fork is listed on Arkansas\u27 1998 303d list as impaired from sediment. The Upper White was designated as the states highest priority watershed in the 1999 Unified Watershed Assessment. Accurate determination of stream nutrients and sediment is critical for future determinations of TMDLs, effectiveness of best management practices and trends in water quality

    Injustice perceptions about pain: parent–child discordance is associated with worse functional outcomes

    Pain is experienced within and influenced by social environments. For children with chronic pain, the child–parent relationship and parental beliefs about pain are particularly important and may influence pain outcomes. Pain-related injustice perceptions have recently been identified as an important cognitive–emotional factor for children with pain. The current study aimed to better understand the pain-related injustice perceptions of children with chronic pain and their parents. The sample consisted of 253 pediatric chronic pain patients (mean age = 14.1 years, 74% female) presenting to a tertiary pain clinic. Patients completed measures of pain intensity, pain-related injustice perceptions, stress, functional disability, and quality of life. Parents completed a measure of pain-related injustice perceptions about their child's pain. Child–parent dyads were categorized into 1 of 4 categories based on the degree of concordance or discordance between their scores on the injustice measures. One-way analysis of variances examined differences in pain intensity, stress, functional disability, and quality of life across the 4 dyad categories. Our findings indicated that both the degree (concordant vs discordant) and direction (discordant low child–high parent vs discordant high child–low parent) of similarity between child and parent injustice perceptions were associated with child-reported pain intensity, stress, functional disability, and quality of life. The poorest outcomes were reported when children considered their pain as highly unjust, but their parents did not. These findings highlight the important role of parents in the context of pain-related injustice perceptions in pediatric chronic pain

    Dark complexes of the Calvin-Benson cycle in a physiological perspective

    : Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and phosphoribulokinase (PRK) are two enzymes of the Calvin Benson cycle that stand out for some peculiar properties they have in common: (i) they both use the products of light reactions for catalysis (NADPH for GAPDH, ATP for PRK), (ii) they are both light-regulated through thioredoxins and (iii) they are both involved in the formation of regulatory supramolecular complexes in the dark or low photosynthetic conditions, with or without the regulatory protein CP12. In the complexes, enzymes are transiently inactivated but ready to recover full activity after complex dissociation. Fully active GAPDH and PRK are in large excess for the functioning of the Calvin-Benson cycle, but they can limit the cycle upon complex formation. Complex dissociation contributes to photosynthetic induction. CP12 also controls PRK concentration in model photosynthetic organisms like Arabidopsis thaliana and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The review combines in vivo and in vitro data into an integrated physiological view of the role of GAPDH and PRK dark complexes in the regulation of photosynthesis
