Detecting Vanishing Dimensions Via Primordial Gravitational Wave Astronomy
Lower-dimensionality at higher energies has manifold theoretical advantages
as recently pointed out. Moreover, it appears that experimental evidence may
already exists for it - a statistically significant planar alignment of events
with energies higher than TeV has been observed in some earlier cosmic ray
experiments. We propose a robust and independent test for this new paradigm.
Since (2+1)-dimensional spacetimes have no gravitational degrees of freedom,
gravity waves cannot be produced in that epoch. This places a universal maximum
frequency at which primordial waves can propagate, marked by the transition
between dimensions. We show that this cut-off frequency may be accessible to
future gravitational wave detectors such as LISA.Comment: Somewhat expanded version with discussions that could not fit into

Larger Domains from Resonant Decay of Disoriented Chiral Condensates
The decay of disoriented chiral condensates into soft pions is considered
within the context of a linear sigma model. Unlike earlier analytic studies,
which focused on the production of pions as the sigma field rolled down toward
its new equilibrium value, here we focus on the amplification of
long-wavelength pion modes due to parametric resonance as the sigma field
oscillates around the minimum of its potential. This process can create larger
domains of pion fluctuations than the usual spinodal decomposition process, and
hence may provide a viable experimental signature for chiral symmetry breaking
in relativistic heavy ion collisions; it may also better explain physically the
large growth of domains found in several numerical simulations.Comment: 4pp, 2 figs, Revtex. Minor revisions, conclusions unchange
Anomaly Induced Domain Formation of Disoriented Chiral Condensates
We discuss the effect of chiral anomaly as a possible mechanism for
triggering formation of domains of disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) in
relativistic heavy ion collisions. The anomalous coupling
and the strong, Lorentz contracted electromagnetic fields of the heavy ions
combine to produce the ``anomaly kick'' to the field configuration of the
neutral pion field. We implement the effect of anomaly kick in our numerical
simulation of the linear sigma model in a schematic way which preserves its
characteristic features: the effect is coherent over a large region of space
but is opposite in sign above and below the ion scattering plane. We
demonstrate by detailed simulations with longitudinal expansion that the DCC
domain formation is dramatically enhanced by the anomaly kick in spite of its
small absolute magnitude. We examine the behavior of various physical
quantities such as pion fields, the axial vector currents, and their
correlation functions. Our results also provide useful insight into the
mechanism and properties of DCC domain formation, in general. Finally, we
discuss some experimental observables which can signal the anomaly induced
formation of DCC.Comment: 53 pages (REVTEX), 21 figures. Some figures are in color. To see
figures in color, in particular for Figs. 4, 5, 17-19, is helpful for better
understanding the features of DCC domain formation discussed in the tex
Nuclear Interactions Of Super High Energy Cosmic-rays Observed In Mountain Emulsion Chambers
Here we present a summary of joint discussions on the results of three mountain experiments with large-scale emulsion chambers, at Pamir, Mt. Fuji and Chacaltaya. Observations cover gamma quanta, hadrons and their clusters (called "families"). The following topics are covered, concerning the characteristics of nuclear interactions the energy region 1014-1016 eV: (i) rapid dissipation seen in atmospheric diffusion of high-energy cosmic-rays; (ii) multiplicity and Pt increase in produced pi-mesons in the fragmentation region; (iii) existence of large-Pt jets, (iv) extremely hadron-rich family of the Centauro type; (v) exotic phenomena in the extremely high energy region beyond 1016 eV. © 1981.1911125(1977) Acta Univ.
