    Disorder and superconductivity : a new phase of bi-particle localized states

    We study the two-dimensional, disordered, attractive Hubbard model by the projector quantum Monte Carlo method and Bogoliubov - de Gennes mean-field theory. Our results for the ground state show the appearance of a new phase with charge localization in the metallic regime of the non-interacting model. Contrary to the common lore, we demonstrate that mean-field theory fails to predict this phase and is unable to describe the correct physical picture in this regime.Comment: revtex, 4 pages, 3 figure

    Transition to an Insulating Phase Induced by Attractive Interactions in the Disordered Three-Dimensional Hubbard Model

    We study numerically the interplay of disorder and attractive interactions for spin-1/2 fermions in the three-dimensional Hubbard model. The results obtained by projector quantum Monte Carlo simulations show that at moderate disorder, increasing the attractive interaction leads to a transition from delocalized superconducting states to the insulating phase of localized pairs. This transition takes place well within the metallic phase of the single-particle Anderson model.Comment: revtex, 4 pages, 3 figure

    Imprints of gravitational lensing in the Planck CMB data at the location of WISExSCOS galaxies

    We detect weak gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at the location of the WISExSCOS (WxS) galaxies using the publicly available Planck lensing convergence map. By stacking the lensing convergence map at the position of 12.4 million galaxies in the redshift range 0.1z0.3450.1\le z \le 0.345, we find the average mass of the galaxies to be M200crit_{200_{\rm crit}} = 6.25 ±\pm 0.6 ×1012 M\times 10^{12}\ M_{\odot}. The null hypothesis of no-lensing is rejected at a significance of 17σ17\sigma. We split the galaxy sample into three redshift slices each containing \sim4.1 million objects and obtain lensing masses in each slice of 4.18 ±\pm 0.8, 6.93 ±\pm 0.9, and 18.84 ±\pm 1.2 \times\ 10^{12}\ \mbox{M}_{\odot}. Our results suggest a redshift evolution of the galaxy sample masses but this apparent increase might be due to the preferential selection of intrinsically luminous sources at high redshifts. The recovered mass of the stacked sample is reduced by 28% when we remove the galaxies in the vicinity of galaxy clusters with mass M200crit_{200_{\rm crit}} = 2 \times 10^{14}\ \mbox{M}_{\odot}. We forecast that upcoming CMB surveys can achieve 5% galaxy mass constraints over sets of 12.4 million galaxies with M200crit_{200_{\rm crit}} = 1×1012 M1 \times 10^{12}\ M_{\odot} at z=1z=1.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables: updates: correlations between z-bins included: accepted for publication in PR

    Piezoelectric rotator for studying quantum effects in semiconductor nanostructures at high magnetic fields and low temperatures

    We report the design and development of a piezoelectric sample rotation system, and its integration into an Oxford Instruments Kelvinox 100 dilution refrigerator, for orientation-dependent studies of quantum transport in semiconductor nanodevices at millikelvin temperatures in magnetic fields up to 10T. Our apparatus allows for continuous in situ rotation of a device through >100deg in two possible configurations. The first enables rotation of the field within the plane of the device, and the second allows the field to be rotated from in-plane to perpendicular to the device plane. An integrated angle sensor coupled with a closed-loop feedback system allows the device orientation to be known to within +/-0.03deg whilst maintaining the sample temperature below 100mK.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Sorption of sulfamethoxazole, sulfachloropyridazine and sulfamethazine onto six New Zealand dairy farm soils

    We have investigated the sorption potential of three sulfonamides (SAs) in six New Zealand dairy farming soils using a modified batch equilibrium method employing 0.005 M CaCl₂ as background solution. Both liquid and solid phases were extracted to analyse for the antibiotic concentrations in order to avoid underestimation that may arise a result of photolysis or biotic degradation. The experimental data were later used to construct Freundlich isotherms to determine the effective distribution coefficients. Low log Koc value for all SAs suggests considerable leaching potential for SAs under conditions that are conducive for leaching. The sorption affinity for all soils followed the trend SCP>SMZ>SMO
