Defending simulation theory against the argument from error

    Get PDF
We defend the Simulation Theory of Mind against a challenge from the Theory Theory of Mind. The challenge is that while Simulation Theory can account for Theory of Mind errors, it cannot account for their systematic nature. There are Theory of Mind errors seen in social psychological research with adults where persons are either overly generous or overly cynical in how rational they expect others to be. There are also Theory of Mind errors observable in developmental data drawn from Maxi-type false belief tests. We provide novel responses to several examples showing that Simulation Theory can answer these challenges

Stabilization of grid frequency through dynamic demand control

Frequency stability in electricity networks is essential to the maintenance of supply quality and security. This paper investigates whether a degree of built-in frequency stability could be provided by incorporating dynamic demand control into certain consumer appliances. Such devices would monitor system frequency (a universally available indicator of supply-demand imbalance) and switch the appliance on or off accordingly, striking a compromise between the needs of the appliance and the grid. A simplified computer model of a power grid was created incorporating aggregate generator inertia, governor action and load-frequency dependence plus refrigerators with dynamic demand controllers. Simulation modelling studies were carried out to investigate the system's response to a sudden loss of generation, and to fluctuating wind power. The studies indicated a significant delay in frequency-fall and a reduced dependence on rapidly deployable backup generation

Ethics in Accountancy Education: Should They Be Taught?

The research I performed was to come to the conclusion whether or not ethics education should be integrated into the accountancy curriculum. I read several books and magazine articles on the topic, which are introduced in my thesis. Also introduced in the thesis were major studies performed to evaluate the effectiveness of ethics education in business curriculums at several colleges and universities. Based on my research and personal feelings toward the subject, I came to the conclusion that ethics education should be integrated into accounting courses after business principles courses have been completed. My conclusion remained unchanged from before I began the project. I found many advocates of ethics education while doing my research, and believe there is a great need for ethics education in all curriculums, but especially in curriculums that prepare the student for such a highly ethical profession.B.A. (Bachelor of Arts

Buy My Vote: Online Reviews for Sale

The Internet has granted consumers access to a wealth of information to use in researching products and services. A substantial portion of this information consists of online consumer reviews, which hold great influence over consumers\u27 purchasing decisions due to their perceived honesty and independence from the company. The problem with relying on these reviews, however, is that real consumers may not be the authors; instead, companies often hire writers to fabricate reviews, known as opinion spam, which can either be positive for the hiring company or negative toward an innocent competitor. Because these fake reviews are difficult to detect, both consumers and competing businesses suffer harm. Parties looking to sue for this harm must overcome the writers\u27 First Amendment-protected anonymity, making it a challenge to bring private actions for defamation or complaints to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Moreover, while the FTC has the authority to pursue its own claims against the writers and the hiring companies under its revised guidelines, it has failed to pursue many cases, in part because of the struggle to identify the perpetrators. And those groups with the most power to block such reviews from the Internet--the hosting websites--are immune from suit under the Federal Communications Decency Act (FCDA). This Note advocates for greater involvement by the FTC, urges Congress to amend the FCDA to eliminate website immunity, and encourages the websites to establish greater measures to bar suspicious reviews and gather more information to assist in identifying the purveyors of opinion spam

Faculty Knowledge of the Purposes and Processes of Short-Term Faculty Led Study Abroad

Are the faculty leaders of short-term international study abroad programs aware of what is necessary to facilitate the best outcomes for their students? Are faculty members aware of established purpose and processes for international education and specifically short-term programs? Open Doors reported in 2014 that the percentage of undergraduate students in the United States participating in an international experience has more than doubled since 2000 but this is still less than 10 percent of the total number of undergraduates in the United States. In 2014, 60.3 percent of students participating in an international experience did so in a short-term faculty led course. Recently, the Institute of International Education announced its commitment to a new five-year initiative, “Generation Study Abroad”, with the goal of having 600,000 students studying abroad by the 2017-2018 academic year. With the majority of students choosing short-term programs and the expectation of continued growth of these programs, faculty leaders need to be aware of smart practices in the field of international education. Faculty members around the United States participated in an online survey with questions designed to determine their knowledge of the purpose of international education, as well as knowledge of suggested smart practices. The results show that faculty leaders are aware of some aspects of international education but overall awareness of the need to use experiential learning as a cornerstone for curriculum for these programs is lacking. To assure the best possible outcomes for students participating in short-term faculty led programs, training for faculty leaders on smart practices will facilitate the creations of graduates ready to participate as global citizens.
