Quantum ergodicity for restrictions to hypersurfaces
Quantum ergodicity theorem states that for quantum systems with ergodic
classical flows, eigenstates are, in average, uniformly distributed on energy
surfaces. We show that if N is a hypersurface in the position space satisfying
a simple dynamical condition, the restrictions of eigenstates to N are also

L^{2}-restriction bounds for eigenfunctions along curves in the quantum completely integrable case
We show that for a quantum completely integrable system in two dimensions,the
-normalized joint eigenfunctions of the commuting semiclassical
pseudodifferential operators satisfy restriction bounds ofthe form for generic
curves on the surface. We also prove that the maximal restriction
bounds of Burq-Gerard-Tzvetkov are always attained for certain exceptional

Trends in Elasticity and Electronic Structure of Transition-Metal Nitrides and Carbides from First Principles
The elastic properties of the -structured transition-metal nitrides and
their carbide counterparts are studied using the {\it ab initio\} density
functional perturbation theory. The linear response results of elastic
constants are in excellent agreement with those obtained from numerical
derivative methods, and are also consistent with measured data. We find the
following trends: (1) Bulk moduli and tetragonal shear moduli
, increase and lattice constants decrease
rightward or downward on the Periodic Table for the metal component or if C is
replaced by N; (2) The inequality holds for
; (3) depends strongly on the number of valence electrons per
unit cell (). From the fitted curve of as a function of , we
can predict that MoN is unstable in structure, and transition-metal
carbonitrides ( ZrCN) and di-transition-metal carbides

Bioresorbable Polylactide Interbody Implants in an Ovine Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Model: Three-Year Results
Study Design.
In vivo study of anterior discectomy and fusion using a bioresorbable 70:30 poly(l-lactide-co-d,l-lactide) interbody implant in an ovine model.
Objective.
To evaluate the efficacy of the polylactide implant to function as an interbody fusion device, and to assess the tissue reaction to the material during the resorption process.
Summary of Background Data.
The use of polylactide as a cervical interbody implant has several potential advantages when compared with traditional materials. Having an elastic modulus very similar to bone minimizes the potential for stress shielding, and as the material resorbs additional loading is transferred to the developing fusion mass. Although preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated the suitability of polylactide implants for lumbar interbody fusion, detailed information on cervical anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with polylactide devices is desirable.
Methods.
Single level ACDF was performed in 8 skeletally mature ewes. Bioresorbable 70:30 poly (l-lactide-co-d,l-lactide) interbody implants packed with autograft were used with single-level metallic plates. Radiographs were made every 3 months up to 1 year, and yearly thereafter. The animals were killed at 6 months (3 animals), 12 months (3 animals), and 36 months (2 animals). In addition to the serial plain radiographs, the specimens were evaluated by nondestructive biomechanical testing and undecalcified histologic analysis.
Results.
The bioresorbable polylactide implants were effective in achieving interbody fusion. The 6-month animals appeared fused radiographically and biomechanically, whereas histologic sections demonstrated partial fusion (in 3 of 3 animals). Radiographic fusion was confirmed histologically and biomechanically at 12 months (3 of 3 animals) and 36 months (2 of 2 animals). A mild chronic inflammatory response to the resorbing polylactide implant was observed at both 6 months and 12 months. At 36 months, the operative levels were solidly fused and the implants were completely resorbed. No adverse tissue response was observed in any animal at any time period.
Conclusion.
Interbody fusion was achieved using bioresorbable polylactide implants, with no evidence of implant collapse, extrusion, or adverse tissue response to the material. The use of polylactide as a cervical interbody device appears both safe and effective based on these ACDF animal model results
Crystallization in suspensions of hard spheres: A Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics simulation study
The crystallization of a metastable melt is one of the most important non
equilibrium phenomena in condensed matter physics, and hard sphere colloidal
model systems have been used for several decades to investigate this process by
experimental observation and computer simulation. Nevertheless, there is still
an unexplained discrepancy between simulation data and experimental nucleation
rate densities. In this paper we examine the nucleation process in hard spheres
using molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation. We show that the
crystallization process is mediated by precursors of low orientational
bond-order and that our simulation data fairly match the experimental data

VLBI imaging of extremely high redshift quasars at 5 GHz
We present very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images of ten very high
redshift (z>3) quasars at 5 GHz. The sources 0004+139, 0830+101, 0906+041,
0938+119 and 1500+045 were observed in September 1992 using a global VLBI
array, while 0046+063, 0243+181, 1338+381, 1428+423 and 1557+032 were observed
in October 1996 with the European VLBI Network and Hartebeesthoek, South
Africa. Most of the sources are resolved and show asymmetric structure. The
sample includes 1428+423, the most distant radio loud quasar known to date
(z=4.72). It is barely resolved with an angular resolution of about 2.0*1.4

The Peculiar Type Ia Supernova 1999by: Spectroscopy at Early Epochs
We present medium resolution (lambda/Delta lambda = 2500) optical
spectroscopy of SN 1999by in NGC 2841 made around its light maximum. The depth
ratio of the two Si II features at 5800 AA and 6150 AA being R(SiII) approx.
0.63 at maximum indicates that this SN belongs to the peculiar, sub-luminous
SNe Ia. Radial velocities inferred from the minimum of the 6150 AA trough
reveal a steeper decline of the velocity curve than expected for ``normal'' SNe
Ia, consistent with the behavior of published VRI light curves. A revised
absolute magnitude of SN 1999by and distance to its host galaxy NGC 2841 is
estimated based on the Multi-Color Light Curve Shape (MLCS) method, resulting
in M_V(max)=-18.06+/- 0.1 mag and d = 17.1+/-1.2 Mpc, respectively. An
approximative linear dependence of the luminosity parameter Delta on R(SiII) is

VSOP observation of the quasar PKS 2215+020: a new laboratory for core-jet physics at z=3.572
We report results of a VSOP (VLBI Space Observatory Programme) observation of
a high redshift quasar PKS 2215+020 (z=3.572). The ~1 milliarcsecond resolution
image of the quasar reveals a prominent `core-jet' structure on linear scales
from 5/h to 300/h pc ($H_0=100*h km/(s*Mpc). The brightness temperatures and
sizes of bright features identified in the jet are consistent with emission
from relativistic shocks dominated by adiabatic energy losses. The jet is
powered by the central black hole with estimated mass of ~4*10^9 solar masses.
Comparisons with VLA and ROSAT observations indicate a possible presence of an
extended radio/X-ray halo surrounding 2215+020.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, aastex macros; accepted for publication in The
