The Quantum Algebraic Structure of the Twisted XXZ Chain

We consider the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method with a new R-matrix depending on two parameters qq and tt. We find that the underlying algebraic structure is the two-parameter deformed algebra SUq,t(2)SU_{q,t}(2) enlarged by introducing an element belonging to the centre. The corresponding Hamiltonian describes the spin-1/2 XXZ model with twisted periodic boundary conditions.Comment: LateX file, 9 pages, Minor changes (including authors` names in the hep-th heading

A Multi-Membership Catalogue for 1876 Open Clusters using UCAC4 data

The main objective of this work is to determine the cluster members of 1876 open clusters, using positions and proper motions of the astrometric catalogue UCAC4. For this purpose we apply three different methods, all them based on a Bayesian approach, but with different formulations: a purely parametric method, another completely non-parametric algorithm, and a third, recently developed by Sampedro & Alfaro, using both formulations at different steps of the whole process. The first and second statistical moments of the members phase-space subspace, obtained after applying the three methods, are compared for every cluster. Although, on average, the three methods yield similar results, specific differences between them, as well as for some particular clusters, are also present. The comparison with other published catalogues shows good agreement. We have also estimated for the first time the mean proper motion for a sample of 18 clusters. The results are organized in a single catalogue formed by two main files, one with the most relevant information for each cluster, partially including that in UCAC4, and the other showing the individual membership probabilities for each star in the cluster area. The final catalogue, with an interface design that enables an easy interaction with the user, is available in electronic format at SSG-IAA (http://ssg.iaa.es/en/content/sampedro-cluster-catalog) website.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 9 pages, 3 figures, 6 table

Some boundary effects in quantum field theory

We have constructed a quantum field theory in a finite box, with periodic boundary conditions, using the hypothesis that particles living in a finite box are created and/or annihilated by the creation and/or annihilation operators, respectively, of a quantum harmonic oscillator on a circle. An expression for the effective coupling constant is obtained showing explicitly its dependence on the dimension of the box.Comment: 12 pages, Late

Dynamical instability in kicked Bose-Einstein condensates: Bogoliubov resonances

Bose-Einstein condensates subject to short pulses (`kicks') from standing waves of light represent a nonlinear analogue of the well-known chaos paradigm, the quantum kicked rotor. Previous studies of the onset of dynamical instability (ie exponential proliferation of non-condensate particles) suggested that the transition to instability might be associated with a transition to chaos. Here we conclude instead that instability is due to resonant driving of Bogoliubov modes. We investigate the excitation of Bogoliubov modes for both the quantum kicked rotor (QKR) and a variant, the double kicked rotor (QKR-2). We present an analytical model, valid in the limit of weak impulses which correctly gives the scaling properties of the resonances and yields good agreement with mean-field numerics.Comment: 8 page

Prognostic value of CA125 in advanced heart failure patients

INTRODUCTION: Serum levels of CA125 are often high in advanced heart failure (AHF) patients. AIM: To determine the predictive value of CA125 in forecasting the occurrence of death or cardiac transplantation in an AHF population. METHODS: 88 AHF patients referred for heart transplantation were divided into 2 groups based on CA125 levels: normal (CA125/=38 U/mL). Events (death or heart transplant) were monitored over a period of 13+/-7 months after CA125 determination. RESULTS: Patients with elevated CA125 (n=65) had significantly lower blood pressure, body mass index, serum sodium and peak exercise oxygen consumption, while B-type natriuretic peptide levels were significantly higher. The combined primary endpoint (death or heart transplant) rate was 39.4% and 62.3% in normal and elevated CA125 groups, respectively (p=0.029). Multivariate regression analysis showed that CA125 and sodium levels were the only independent predictors of the combined endpoint. CONCLUSION: In AHF patients, plasma CA125 was an effective prognostic marker. Its determination may contribute to better risk stratification in this population

Entanglement and dynamics of spin-chains in periodically-pulsed magnetic fields: accelerator modes

We study the dynamics of a single excitation in a Heisenberg spin-chain subjected to a sequence of periodic pulses from an external, parabolic, magnetic field. We show that, for experimentally reasonable parameters, a pair of counter-propagating coherent states are ejected from the centre of the chain. We find an illuminating correspondence with the quantum time evolution of the well-known paradigm of quantum chaos, the Quantum Kicked Rotor (QKR). From this we can analyse the entanglement production and interpret the ejected coherent states as a manifestation of so-called `accelerator modes' of a classically chaotic system.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; minor corrections, tidied presentatio

    Semiclassical description of resonant tunneling

We derive a semiclassical formula for the tunneling current of electrons trapped in a potential well which can tunnel into and across a wide quantum well. The calculations idealize an experimental situation where a strong magnetic field tilted with respect to an electric field is used. The resulting semiclassical expression is written as the sum over special periodic orbits which hit both walls of the quantum well and are perpendicular to the first wall.Comment: LaTeX, 8 page
