Configurations of Handles and the Classification of Divergences in the String Partition Function
The divergences that arise in the regularized partition function for closed
bosonic string theory in flat space lead to three types of perturbation series
expansions, distinguished by their genus dependence. This classification of
infinities can be traced to geometrical characteristics of the string
worldsheet. Some categories of divergences may be eliminated in string theories

Existence versus Exploitation: The Opacity of Backbones and Backdoors Under a Weak Assumption
Backdoors and backbones of Boolean formulas are hidden structural properties.
A natural goal, already in part realized, is that solver algorithms seek to
obtain substantially better performance by exploiting these structures.
However, the present paper is not intended to improve the performance of SAT
solvers, but rather is a cautionary paper. In particular, the theme of this
paper is that there is a potential chasm between the existence of such
structures in the Boolean formula and being able to effectively exploit them.
This does not mean that these structures are not useful to solvers. It does
mean that one must be very careful not to assume that it is computationally
easy to go from the existence of a structure to being able to get one's hands
on it and/or being able to exploit the structure.
For example, in this paper we show that, under the assumption that P
NP, there are easily recognizable families of Boolean formulas with strong
backdoors that are easy to find, yet for which it is hard (in fact,
NP-complete) to determine whether the formulas are satisfiable. We also show
that, also under the assumption P NP, there are easily recognizable sets
of Boolean formulas for which it is hard (in fact, NP-complete) to determine
whether they have a large backbone

Pension fund finance and sponsoring companies: Empirical evidence on theoretical hypotheses
This study presents empirical evidence on the influence of sponsoring companies on the
funding and portfolio allocation of pension funds, an issue on which most extant literature is theoretical. We use a unique microdataset of 550 Dutch defined benefit company pension funds and 100 sponsoring firms over 1996-2005 to test the relevance of the main theoretical hypotheses, the first paper to do so in a comprehensive manner. We find that pension funds
have lower cover ratios when (1) their sponsoring company is highly leveraged, (2) the fund’s return on assets is relatively low, and (3) the sponsoring firm is small. Further, defined benefit pension funds are found to invest more in shares when their sponsoring companies are highly leveraged. These links in general suggest higher risk in the sponsor leads to correspondingly higher risk in the fund, and warrant close attention by regulators
Diffusion models for Jupiter's radiation belt
Solutions are given for the diffusion of trapped particles in a planetary magnetic field in which the first and second adiabatic invariants are preserved but the third is not, using as boundary conditions a fixed density at the outer boundary (the magnetopause) and a zero density at an inner boundary (the planetary surface). Losses to an orbiting natural satellite are included and an approximate evaluation is made of the effects of the synchrotron radiation on the energy of relativistic electrons. Choosing parameters appropriate to Jupiter, the electrons required to produce the observed synchrotron radiation are explained. If a speculative mechanism in which the diffusion is driven by ionospheric wind is the true explanation of the electrons producing the synchrotron emission it can be concluded that Jupiter's inner magnetosphere is occupied by an energetic proton flux that would be a serious hazard to spacecraft

Plausible future market scenarios for solar heating and cooling systems into buildings in the area served by the Southern California Edison Company. A range of plausible estimates for the number of solar systems which might be installed and the electrical energy which might be displaced by energy from these systems are provided. The effect on peak electrical load was not explicitly calculated but preliminary conclusions concerning peak load can be inferred from the estimates presented. Two markets are investigated: the single family market and the large power commercial market
A Catalog of Galaxy Clusters Observed by XMM-Newton
Aims: We present a uniform catalog of the images and radial profiles of the
temperature, abundance, and brightness for 70 clusters of galaxies observed by
XMM-Newton.
Methods: We use a new "first principles" approach to the modeling and removal
of the background components; the quiescent particle background, the cosmic
diffuse emission, the soft proton contamination, and the solar wind charge
exchange emission. Each of the background components demonstrate significant
spectral variability, several have spatial distributions that are not described
by the photon vignetting function, and all except for the cosmic diffuse
emission are temporally variable. Because these backgrounds strongly affect the
analysis of low surface brightness objects, we provide a detailed description
our methods of identification, characterization, and removal.
Results: We have applied these methods to a large collection of XMM-Newton
observations of clusters of galaxies and present the resulting catalog. We find
significant systematic differences between the Chandra and XMM-Newton
