Risk management in solitary agricultural work: new technologies for handling emergency and falls from great heights (SHADE)
Solitary work and agricultural activities are the scenarios of a large number of severe injuries and deaths, also because first aid may be difficult to achieve in isolated locations. This work proposes a technology available on smartphones that allows triggering an emergency call when a fall from height or an unconsciousness state is detected. The results of several tests, which include different detection algorithms and scenarios, are reported in this work. Tests performed with the aid of a dummy have allowed developing a reliable algorithm for the detection of dangerous situations. This system is available as an Android application
Multi-language transfer learning for low-resource legal case summarization
Analyzing and evaluating legal case reports are labor-intensive tasks for judges and lawyers, who usually base their decisions on report abstracts, legal principles, and commonsense reasoning. Thus, summarizing legal documents is time-consuming and requires excellent human expertise. Moreover, public legal corpora of specific languages are almost unavailable. This paper proposes a transfer learning approach with extractive and abstractive techniques to cope with the lack of labeled legal summarization datasets, namely a low-resource scenario. In particular, we conducted extensive multi- and cross-language experiments. The proposed work outperforms the state-of-the-art results of extractive summarization on the Australian Legal Case Reports dataset and sets a new baseline for abstractive summarization. Finally, syntactic and semantic metrics assessments have been carried out to evaluate the accuracy and the factual consistency of the machine-generated legal summaries
Spreading of thin films assisted by thermal fluctuations
We study the spreading of viscous drops on a solid substrate, taking into
account the effects of thermal fluctuations in the fluid momentum. A nonlinear
stochastic lubrication equation is derived, and studied using numerical
simulations and scaling analysis. We show that asymptotically spreading drops
admit self-similar shapes, whose average radii can increase at rates much
faster than these predicted by Tanner's law. We discuss the physical
realizability of our results for thin molecular and complex fluid films, and
predict that such phenomenon can in principal be observed in various flow
geometries.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
An FPGA-based controller for collaborative robotics
The use of robots is becoming more common in society. Industrial robots are being developed to work with people, and lower-force collaborative robots are being developed to help people in their everyday lives. These may need fast and sophisticated motion control and behavioral algorithms, but are expected to be more compact and lower cost. This paper proposes a processor plus FPGA solution for the control systems for such robots, where the FPGA performs all real-time tasks, freeing the processor to run lower-frequency high level control and interface to other devices such as camera systems. A demonstrator robot is designed, combining multi-axis motion control with 3D robot vision
Numerical schemes for continuum models of reaction-diffusion systems subject to internal noise
We present new numerical schemes to integrate stochastic partial differential
equations which describe the spatio-temporal dynamics of reaction-diffusion
(RD) problems under the effect of internal fluctuations. The schemes conserve
the nonnegativity of the solutions and incorporate the Poissonian nature of
internal fluctuations at small densities, their performance being limited by
the level of approximation of density fluctuations at small scales. We apply
the new schemes to two different aspects of the Reggeon model namely, the study
of its non-equilibrium phase transition and the dynamics of fluctuating pulled
fronts. In the latter case, our approach allows to reproduce quantitatively for
the first time microscopic properties within the continuum model.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical Review E as

Low-lying states in 8B
Excitation functions of elastic and inelastic 7Be+p scattering were measured
in the energy range between 1.6 and 2.8 MeV in the c.m. An R-matrix analysis of
the excitation functions provides strong evidence for new positive parity
states in 8B. A new 2+ state at an excitation energy of 2.55 MeV was observed
and a new 0+ state at 1.9 MeV is tentatively suggested. The R-matrix and Time
Dependent Continuum Shell Model were used in the analysis of the excitation
functions. The new results are compared to the calculations of contemporary
theoretical models.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted as Rapid Communication in Phys. Rev.
Broodstock management: cryopreservation parameters to select native tropical fish.
Genetic management of broodstock aims to produce fingerlings of superior quality from the adoption of practices and technological processes that assist in the control of the breeders. For this effective control, the fish farmer must avoid matings that would yield inbreeding and select the best breeders by the sperm quality
Emergence of the N=16 shell gap in 21O
The spectroscopy of O21 has been investigated using a radioactive O20 beam and the (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The ground and first excited states have been determined to be Jπ=5/2+ and 1/2+, respectively. Two neutron unbound states were observed at excitation energies of 4.77(10) and 6.17(11) MeV. The spectroscopic factor deduced for the lower of these, interpreted as a 3/2+ level, reveals a relatively pure (60%) 0d3/2 single-particle configuration, in good agreement with shell-model calculations that predict O26 to be unbound. The large energy difference between the 3/2+ and 1/2+ states is indicative of the emergence of the N=16 shell gap, which is estimated to be 5.1(11) MeV. For the higher-lying resonance, which has a character consistent with a spin-parity assignment of 3/2+ or 7/2-, a 0.71(22) branching ratio to the first 2+ state in O20 has been observed.Unión Europea EURISOL 515768 RIDSNSF PHY-075809
