Loadcell supports for a dynamic force plate

    Get PDF
An apparatus was developed to accurately measure components of force along three mutually perpendicular axes, torque, and the center of pressure imposed by the foot of a subject walking over its surface. The data obtained were used to supplement high-speed motion picture and electromyographic (EMG) data for in-depth studies of normal or abnormal human gait. Significant features of the design (in particular, the mechanisms used to support the loadcell transducers) are described. Results of the development program and typical data obtained with the device are presented and discussed

Measuring time perspective in adolescents : can you get the right answer by asking the wrong questions?

    Get PDF
Time perspective continues to evolve as a psychological construct. The extant literature suggests that higher future orientation and lower present orientation are associated with better developmental outcomes. However, the extant literature also suggests that issues remain with the measurement of the construct. Recently, a 25-item version of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI-25) was suggested for use based on high internal consistency estimates and good discriminant validity of scores in a sample of Italian adolescents. However, the genesis of this scale is uncertain. The present study examined the factorial validity, reliability, and concurrent validity of ZTPI-25 scores in Slovenian, American, and British adolescents. Results revealed satisfactory concurrent validity based on correlations with measures used in the development of the full ZTPI. However, internal consistency and factorial validity of scores were unsatisfactory. The present study questions the use of the ZTPI-25 with adolescents in the context of conceptual and measurement issues more broadly

T-28 data acquisition during COHMEX 1986

As part of the 1986 Cooperative Huntsville Meteorological Experiment (COHMEX) a cloud physics instrumented T-28 aircraft was used in conjunction with multiple ground based Doppler radars to characterize hydrometeors and updraft structure within developing summertime cumulus and cumulonimbus cloud systems near Huntsville, Alabama. Instrumentation aboard the aircraft included a Particle Measuring Systems (PMS) Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP), a PMS 2D Cloud Probe and a PMS 2D Precipitation Probe, as well as a hail spectrometer and a foil impactor. Hydrometeor spectra were obtained in the interior of mature thunderstorms over the size range from cloud droplets through hailstones. In addition, vertical wind speed, temperature, Johnson-Williams (JW) liquid water content and electric field measurements were made. Significant microphysical differences exist between these clouds and summertime cumulonimbus clouds which develop over the Central Plains. One notable difference in clouds displaying similar radar reflectivities is that COHMEX hydrometeors are typically smaller and more numerous than those observed in the Central Plains. The COHMEX cloud microphysical measurements represent ground truth values for the remote sensing instrumentation which was flown over the cloud tops at altitudes between 60,000 and 70,000 ft aboard NASA U-2 and ER-2 aircraft. They are also being used jointly with a numerical cloud model to assist in understanding the development of summertime subtropical clouds

A Unique Population of Cave Bears (Carnivora: Ursidae) from the Middle Pleistocene of Kents Cavern, England, Based on Dental Morphometrics

The ‘breccia’ stratum from Kents (we follow local tradition in using the form ‘Kents’, without an apostrophe) Cavern, England, has been well known for its rich yield of cave-bear material since excavations began in the mid-19th century. Recent work has established that the bears are of latest MIS 12 or earliest MIS 11 age. A life table based on a collection of 67 molariform teeth is consistent with the use of the cave as a hibernaculum. Univariate and morphological assessment of the teeth shows an unusual range of primitive and more derived characters. Multivariate morphometric analysis of cave-bear teeth from the site demonstrates that these animals, while currently assignable to Ursus deningeri sensu lato, are nevertheless morphologically distinct and not simply late deningeri on a hypothetical chronospecific continuum

Parenting Stress: A Comparison of Grandmother Caretakers and Mothers

Parenting stress in grandmother caretakers has not been directly compared with a matched sample of mothers in the caretaker role. This study examined the main and interaction effects of caretaker status, employment, and race on parenting stress and whether these factors affect parenting stress in a convenience sample of grandmothers raising grandchildren (n = 86) and a sample of mothers of preschoolers (n = 86), matched for women’s partner status, race, and employment. Grandmothers raising grandchildren reported more overall parenting stress and parental distress than mothers. Non-employed women reported more negative perceptions of their children and more difficult interactions with them. When controlling for contextual variables, grandmother caretakers showed greater parenting distress, but employment was not related to parenting stress. Being Caucasian and caretaking of older children affected overall parenting stress, parent-child interactions, and perceptions of one’s children. Future research needs to consider the effect of outside influences on grandmothers’ stress
