A remark on asymptotic completeness for the critical nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation
We give a short proof of asymptotic completeness and global existence for the
cubic Nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in one dimension. Our approach to dealing
with the long range behavior of the asymptotic solution is by reducing it, in
hyperbolic coordinates to the study of an ODE. Similar arguments extend to
higher dimensions and other long range type nonlinear problems.Comment: To appear in Lett. Math. Phy
Derivation of the Lindblad Generator Structure by use of the It\^o Stochastic Calculus
We use the It\^o stochastic calculus to give a simple derivation of the
Lindblad form for the generator of a completely positive density matrix
evolution, by specialization from the corresponding global form for a
completely positive map. As a by-product, we obtain a generalized generator for
a completely positive stochastic density matrix evolution.Comment: Plain TEX, no figures or table
Simple Non Linear Klein-Gordon Equations in 2 space dimensions, with long range scattering
We establish that solutions, to the most simple NLKG equations in 2 space
dimensions with mass resonance, exhibits long range scattering phenomena.
Modified wave operators and solutions are constructed for these equations. We
also show that the modified wave operators can be chosen such that they
linearize the non-linear representation of the Poincar\'e group defined by the
NLKG.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, To appear in Lett. Math. Phy
Steady state entanglement in open and noisy quantum systems at high temperature
We show that quantum mechanical entanglement can prevail even in noisy open
quantum systems at high temperature and far from thermodynamical equilibrium,
despite the deteriorating effect of decoherence. The system consists of a
number N of interacting quantum particles, and it can interact and exchange
particles with some environment. The effect of decoherence is counteracted by a
simple mechanism, where system particles are randomly reset to some standard
initial state, e.g. by replacing them with particles from the environment. We
present a master equation that describes this process, which we can solve
analytically for small N. If we vary the interaction strength and the reset
against decoherence rate, we find a threshold below which the equilibrium state
is classically correlated, and above which there is a parameter region with
genuine entanglement.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Meteor showers of comet C/1917 F1 Mellish
December Monocerotids and November Orionids are weak but established annual
meteor showers active throughout November and December. Analysis of a high
quality orbits subset of the SonotaCo video meteor database shows that the
distribution of orbital elements, geocentric velocity and also the orbital
evolution of the meteors and potential parent body may imply a common origin
for these meteors coming from the parent comet C/1917 F1 Mellish. This is also
confirmed by the physical properties and activity of these shower meteors. An
assumed release of meteoroids at the perihelion of the comet in the past and
the sky-plane radiant distribution reveal that the December Monocerotid stream
might be younger than the November Orionids. A meteoroid transversal component
of ejection velocity at the perihelion must be larger than 100 m/s. A few
authors have also associated December Canis Minorids with the comet C/1917 F1
Mellish. However, we did not find any connection.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures and 5 table
Transiently Undead Enterocytes Mediate Homeostatic Tissue Turnover in the Adult Drosophila Midgut
We reveal surprising similarities between homeostatic cell turnover in adult Drosophila midguts and undead apoptosis-induced compensatory proliferation (AiP) in imaginal discs. During undead AiP, immortalized cells signal for AiP, allowing its analysis. Critical for undead AiP is the Myo1D-dependent localization of the initiator caspase Dronc to the plasma membrane. Here, we show that Myo1D functions in mature enterocytes (ECs) to control mitotic activity of intestinal stem cells (ISCs). In Myo1D mutant midguts, many signaling events involved in AiP (ROS generation, hemocyte recruitment, and JNK signaling) are affected. Importantly, similar to AiP, Myo1D is required for membrane localization of Dronc in ECs. We propose that ECs destined to die transiently enter an undead-like state through Myo1D-dependent membrane localization of Dronc, which enables them to generate signals for ISC activity and their replacement. The concept of transiently undead cells may be relevant for other stem cell models in flies and mammals
Tumor-promoting function of apoptotic caspases by an amplification loop involving ROS, macrophages and JNK in Drosophila
Apoptosis and its molecular mediators, the caspases, have long been regarded as tumor suppressors and one hallmark of cancer is \u27Evading Apoptosis\u27. However, recent work has suggested that apoptotic caspases can also promote proliferation and tumor growth under certain conditions. How caspases promote proliferation and how cells are protected from the potentially harmful action of apoptotic caspases is largely unknown. Here, we show that although caspases are activated in a well-studied neoplastic tumor model in Drosophila, oncogenic mutations of the proto-oncogene Ras (Ras(V12)) maintain tumorous cells in an \u27undead\u27-like condition and transform caspases from tumor suppressors into tumor promotors. Instead of killing cells, caspases now promote the generation of intra- and extracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). One function of the ROS is the recruitment and activation of macrophage-like immune cells which in turn signal back to tumorous epithelial cells to activate oncogenic JNK signaling. JNK further promotes and amplifies caspase activity, thereby constituting a feedback amplification loop. Interfering with the amplification loop strongly reduces the neoplastic behavior of these cells and significantly improves organismal survival. In conclusion, Ras(V12)-modified caspases initiate a feedback amplification loop involving tumorous epithelial cells and macrophage-like immune cells that is necessary for uncontrolled tumor growth and invasive behavior
Kinematic approach to the mixed state geometric phase in nonunitary evolution
A kinematic approach to the geometric phase for mixed quantal states in
nonunitary evolution is proposed. This phase is manifestly gauge invariant and
can be experimentally tested in interferometry. It leads to well-known results
when the evolution is unitary.Comment: Minor changes; journal reference adde
Quantum decoherence in the theory of open systems
In the framework of the Lindblad theory for open quantum systems, we
determine the degree of quantum decoherence of a harmonic oscillator
interacting with a thermal bath. It is found that the system manifests a
quantum decoherence which is more and more significant in time. We calculate
also the decoherence time scale and analyze the transition from quantum to
classical behaviour of the considered system.Comment: 6 pages; talk at the 3rd International Workshop "Quantum Physics and

Test Particle in a Quantum Gas
A master equation with a Lindblad structure is derived, which describes the
interaction of a test particle with a macroscopic system and is expressed in
terms of the operator valued dynamic structure factor of the system. In the
case of a free Fermi or Bose gas the result is evaluated in the Brownian limit,
thus obtaining a single generator master equation for the description of
quantum Brownian motion in which the correction due to quantum statistics is
explicitly calculated. The friction coefficients for Boltzmann and Bose or
Fermi statistics are compared.Comment: 9 pages, revtex, no figure
