Polarity-dependent dielectric torque in nematic liquid crystals
The dielectric dispersion in the uniaxial nematic liquid crystals affects the
switching dynamics of the director, as the dielectric torque is determined by
not only the present values of the electric field and director but also by
their past values. We demonstrate that this dielectric memory leads to an
unusual contribution to the dielectric torque that is linear in the present
field and thus polarity-sensitive. This torque can be used to accelerate the
switch-off phase of director dynamics.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
Zero-Point cooling and low heating of trapped 111Cd+ ions
We report on ground state laser cooling of single 111Cd+ ions confined in
radio-frequency (Paul) traps. Heating rates of trapped ion motion are measured
for two different trapping geometries and electrode materials, where no effort
was made to shield the electrodes from the atomic Cd source. The low measured
heating rates suggest that trapped 111Cd+ ions may be well-suited for
experiments involving quantum control of atomic motion, including applications

Entanglement of Trapped-Ion Clock States
A M{\o}lmer-S{\o}rensen entangling gate is realized for pairs of trapped
Cd ions using magnetic-field insensitive "clock" states and an
implementation offering reduced sensitivity to optical phase drifts. The gate
is used to generate the complete set of four entangled states, which are
reconstructed and evaluated with quantum-state tomography. An average
target-state fidelity of 0.79 is achieved, limited by available laser power and
technical noise. The tomographic reconstruction of entangled states
demonstrates universal quantum control of two ion-qubits, which through
multiplexing can provide a route to scalable architectures for trapped-ion

Physical mechanism of the linear beam-size effect at colliders
We present qualitative but precise description of the linear beam-size effect
predicted for the processes in which unstable but long--living particles
collide with each other. We derive physically pronounced equation for the
events rate which proves that the linear beam-size effect corresponds to the
scattering of one beam of particles on the decay products of the other. We
compare this linear beam-size effect with the known logarithmic beam-size
effect measured in the experiments on a single bremsstrahlung at VEPP-4 and

Sensitive methods for estimating the anchoring strength of nematic liquid crystals on Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers of fatty acids
The anchoring of the nematic liquid crystal
N-(p-methoxybenzylidene)-p-butylaniline (MBBA) on Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers
of fatty acids (COOHCH) was studied as a function of the length
of the fatty acid alkyl chains, (). The monolayers were
deposited onto ITO-coated glass plates which were used to assemble sandwich
cells of various thickness that were filled with MBBA in the nematic phase. The
mechanism of relaxation from the flow-induced quasi-planar to the
surface-induced homeotropic alignment was studied for the four decreases
linearly with increasing the length of the alkyl chains which suggests that
the Langmuir-Blodgett film plays a role in the phenomenon. This fact was
confirmed by a sensitive estimation of the anchoring strength of MBBA on the
fatty acid monolayers after anchoring breaking which takes place at the
transition between two electric-field--induced turbulent states, denoted as
DSM1 and DSM2. It was found that the threshold electric field for the anchoring
breaking, which can be considered as a measure of the anchoring strength, also
decreases linearly as increases. Both methods thus possess a high
sensitivity in resolving small differences in anchoring strength. In cells
coated with mixed Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers of two fatty acids ( and
) a maximum of the relaxation speed was observed when the two acids were
present in equal amount. This observation homeotropic cells by changing the

Annotations for Rule-Based Models
The chapter reviews the syntax to store machine-readable annotations and
describes the mapping between rule-based modelling entities (e.g., agents and
rules) and these annotations. In particular, we review an annotation framework
and the associated guidelines for annotating rule-based models of molecular
interactions, encoded in the commonly used Kappa and BioNetGen languages, and
present prototypes that can be used to extract and query the annotations. An
ontology is used to annotate models and facilitate their description
Dynamics of viscous amphiphilic films supported by elastic solid substrates
The dynamics of amphiphilic films deposited on a solid surface is analyzed
for the case when shear oscillations of the solid surface are excited. The two
cases of surface- and bulk shear waves are studied with film exposed to gas or
to a liquid. By solving the corresponding dispersion equation and the wave
equation while maintaining the energy balance we are able to connect the
surface density and the shear viscocity of a fluid amphiphilic overlayer with
experimentally accessible damping coefficients, phase velocity, dissipation

Structures and orientational transitions in thin films of tilted hexatic smectics
We present detailed systematic studies of structural transformations in thin
liquid crystal films with the smectic-C to hexatic phase transition. For the
first time all possible structures reported in the literature are observed for
one material (5 O.6) at the variation of temperature and thickness. In unusual
modulated structures the equilibrium period of stripes is twice with respect to
the domain size. We interpret these patterns in the frame work of
phenomenological Landau type theory, as equilibrium phenomena produced by a
natural geometric frustration in a system having spontaneous splay distortion.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
