One and two dimensional tunnel junction arrays in weak Coulomb blockade regime-absolute accuracy in thermometry
We have investigated one and two dimensional (1D and 2D) arrays of tunnel
junctions in partial Coulomb blockade regime. The absolute accuracy of the
Coulomb blockade thermometer is influenced by the external impedance of the
array, which is not the same in the different topologies of 1D and 2D arrays.
We demonstrate, both by experiment and by theoretical calculations in simple
geometries, that the 1D structures are better in this respect. Yet in both 1D
and 2D, the influence of the environment can be made arbitrarily small by
making the array sufficiently large.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Origin of the hysteresis in bilayer 2D systems in the quantum Hall regime
The hysteresis observed in the magnetoresistance of bilayer 2D systems in the
quantum Hall regime is generally attributed to the long time constant for
charge transfer between the 2D systems due to the very low conductivity of the
quantum Hall bulk states. We report electrometry measurements of a bilayer 2D
system that demonstrate that the hysteresis is instead due to non-equilibrium
induced current. This finding is consistent with magnetometry and electrometry
measurements of single 2D systems, and has important ramifications for
understanding hysteresis in bilayer 2D systems.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figs. Accepted for publication in PR
Electrometry using the quantum Hall effect in a bilayer 2D electron system
We discuss the development of a sensitive electrometer that utilizes a
two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the quantum Hall regime. As a
demonstration, we measure the evolution of the Landau levels in a second,
nearby 2DEG as the applied perpendicular magnetic field is changed, and extract
an effective mass for electrons in GaAs that agrees within experimental error

Electron energy relaxation by phonons in the Kondo condensate
We have used normal metal-insulator-superconductor tunnel junctions as
thermometers at sub-Kelvin temperatures to study the electron-phonon (e-p)
interaction in thin Aluminum films doped with Manganese, as a function of
Manganese concentration. Mn in Al is known to be a Kondo impurity with
extremely high Kondo temperature 500 K, thus our results probe the
e-p coupling in the fully spin compensated, unitary limit. The temperature
dependence of the e-p interaction is consistent with the existing theory for
disordered metals, however full theory including the Kondo effect has not been
worked out yet. The strength of the interaction decreases with increasing
Manganese concentration, providing a means to improve sensitivity of detectors
and efficiency of solid state coolers
Effects of Rayleigh Waves on the Essential Spectrum in Perturbed Doubly Periodic Elliptic Problems
We give an example of a scalar second order differential operator in the plane with double periodic coefficients and describe its modification, which causes an additional spectral band in the essential spectrum. The modified operator is obtained by applying to the coefficients a mirror reflection with respect to a vertical or horizontal line. This change gives rise to Rayleigh type waves localized near the line. The results are proven using asymptotic analysis, and they are based on high contrast of the coefficient functions.Peer reviewe
Bands in the spectrum of a periodic elastic waveguide
We study the spectral linear elasticity problem in an unbounded periodic waveguide, which consists of a sequence of identical bounded cells connected by thin ligaments of diameter of order h > 0. The essential spectrum of the problem is known to have band-gap structure. We derive asymptotic formulas for the position of the spectral bands and gaps, as h -> 0.Peer reviewe
Influence of temperature gradients on tunnel junction thermometry below 1 K: cooling and electron-phonon coupling
We have studied thermal gradients in thin Cu and AlMn wires, both
experimentally and theoretically. In the experiments, the wires were Joule
heated non-uniformly at sub-Kelvin temperatures, and the resulting temperature
gradients were measured using normal metal-insulator-superconducting tunnel
junctions. The data clearly shows that even in reasonably well conducting thin
wires with a short (m) non-heated portion, significant temperature
differences can form. In most cases, the measurements agree well with a model
which includes electron-phonon interaction and electronic thermal conductivity
by the Wiedemann-Franz law.Comment: J. Low Temp. Phys. in pres
The dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, tirzepatide, improves lipoprotein biomarkers associated with insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk in patients with type 2 diabetes
Aim To better understand the marked decrease in serum triglycerides observed with tirzepatide in patients with type 2 diabetes, additional lipoprotein-related biomarkers were measured post hoc in available samples from the same study. Materials and Methods Patients were randomized to receive once-weekly subcutaneous tirzepatide (1, 5, 10 or 15 mg), dulaglutide (1.5 mg) or placebo. Serum lipoprotein profile, apolipoprotein (apo) A-I, B and C-III and preheparin lipoprotein lipase (LPL) were measured at baseline and at 4, 12 and 26 weeks. Lipoprotein particle profile by nuclear magnetic resonance was assessed at baseline and 26 weeks. The lipoprotein insulin resistance (LPIR) score was calculated. Results At 26 weeks, tirzepatide dose-dependently decreased apoB and apoC-III levels, and increased serum preheparin LPL compared with placebo. Tirzepatide 10 and 15 mg decreased large triglyceride-rich lipoprotein particles (TRLP), small low-density lipoprotein particles (LDLP) and LPIR score compared with both placebo and dulaglutide. Treatment with dulaglutide also reduced apoB and apoC-III levels but had no effect on either serum LPL or large TRLP, small LDLP and LPIR score. The number of total LDLP was also decreased with tirzepatide 10 and 15 mg compared with placebo. A greater reduction in apoC-III with tirzepatide was observed in patients with high compared with normal baseline triglycerides. At 26 weeks, change in apoC-III, but not body weight, was the best predictor of changes in triglycerides with tirzepatide, explaining up to 22.9% of their variability. Conclusions Tirzepatide treatment dose-dependently decreased levels of apoC-III and apoB and the number of large TRLP and small LDLP, suggesting a net improvement in atherogenic lipoprotein profile.Peer reviewe
Insulin resistance in type 1 diabetes: what is âdouble diabetesâ and what are the risks?
In this review, we explore the concept of âdouble diabetesâ, a combination of type 1 diabetes with features of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. After considering whether double diabetes is a useful concept, we discuss potential mechanisms of increased insulin resistance in type 1 diabetes before examining the extent to which double diabetes might increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We then go on to consider the proposal that weight gain from intensive insulin regimens may be associated with increased CV risk factors in some patients with type 1 diabetes, and explore the complex relationships between weight gain, insulin resistance, glycaemic control and CV outcome. Important comparisons and contrasts between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes are highlighted in terms of hepatic fat, fat partitioning and lipid profile, and how these may differ between type 1 diabetic patients with and without double diabetes. In so doing, we hope this work will stimulate much-needed research in this area and an improvement in clinical practice
Alternative splicing discriminates molecular subtypes and has prognostic impact in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma
Effect of alternative splicing (AS) on diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) pathogenesis and survival has not been systematically addressed. Here, we compared differentially expressed genes and exons in association with survival after chemoimmunotherapy, and between germinal center B-cell like (GCB) and activated B-cell like (ABC) DLBCLs. Genome-wide exon array-based screen was performed from samples of 38 clinically high-risk patients who were treated in a Nordic phase II study with dose-dense chemoimmunotherapy and central nervous system prophylaxis. The exon expression profile separated the patients according to molecular subgroups and survival better than the gene expression profile. Pathway analyses revealed enrichment of AS genes in inflammation and adhesion-related processes, and in signal transduction, such as phosphatidylinositol signaling system and adenosine triphosphate binding cassette transporters. Altogether, 49% of AS-related exons were protein coding, and domain prediction showed 28% of such exons to include a functional domain, such as transmembrane helix domain or phosphorylation sites. Validation in an independent cohort of 92 DLBCL samples subjected to RNA-sequencing confirmed differential exon usage of selected genes and association of AS with molecular subtypes and survival. The results indicate that AS events are able to discriminate GCB and ABC DLBCLs and have prognostic impact in DLBCL.Peer reviewe
