Interactions between a Trawl Fishery and Spatial Closures for Biodiversity Conservation in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, Australia

The Queensland East Coast Otter Trawl Fishery (ECOTF) for penaeid shrimp fishes within Australia's Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (GBRWHA). The past decade has seen the implementation of conservation and fisheries management strategies to reduce the impact of the ECOTF on the seabed and improve biodiversity conservation. New information from electronic vessel location monitoring systems (VMS) provides an opportunity to review the interactions between the ECOTF and spatial closures for biodiversity conservation.\ud

Methodology and Results\ud
We used fishing metrics and spatial information on the distribution of closures and modelled VMS data in a geographical information system (GIS) to assess change in effort of the trawl fishery from 2001–2009 and to quantify the exposure of 70 reef, non-reef and deep water bioregions to trawl fishing. The number of trawlers and the number of days fished almost halved between 2001 and 2009 and new spatial closures introduced in 2004 reduced the area zoned available for trawl fishing by 33%. However, we found that there was only a relatively minor change in the spatial footprint of the fishery as a result of new spatial closures. Non-reef bioregions benefited the most from new spatial closures followed by deep and reef bioregions.\ud

Conclusions/Significance\ud
Although the catch of non target species remains an issue of concern for fisheries management, the small spatial footprint of the ECOTF relative to the size of the GBRWHA means that the impact on benthic habitats is likely to be negligible. The decline in effort as a result of fishing industry structural adjustment, increasing variable costs and business decisions of fishers is likely to continue a trend to fish only in the most productive areas. This will provide protection for most benthic habitats without any further legislative or management intervention
The Spectral Energy Distributions of White Dwarfs in 47 Tucanae: The Distance to the Cluster
We present a new distance determination to the Galactic globular cluster 47
Tucanae by fitting the spectral energy distributions of its white dwarfs to
pure hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf models. Our photometric dataset is
obtained from a 121 orbit Hubble Space Telescope program using the Wide Field
Camera 3 UVIS/IR channels, capturing F390W, F606W, F110W, and F160W images.
These images cover more than 60 square arcmins and extend over a radial range
of 5-13.7 arcmin (6.5-17.9 pc) within the globular cluster. Using a likelihood
analysis, we obtain a best fitting unreddened distance modulus of (m -
M)o=13.36+/-0.02+/-0.06 corresponding to a distance of 4.70+/-0.04+/-0.13 kpc,
where the first error is random and the second is systematic. We also search
the white dwarf photometry for infrared excess in the F160W filter, indicative
of debris disks or low mass companions, and find no convincing cases within our

Doom and Boom on a Resilient Reef: Climate Change, Algal Overgrowth and Coral Recovery
Background: Coral reefs around the world are experiencing large-scale degradation, largely due to global climate change, overfishing, diseases and eutrophication. Climate change models suggest increasing frequency and severity of warming-induced coral bleaching events, with consequent increases in coral mortality and algal overgrowth. Critically, the recovery of damaged reefs will depend on the reversibility of seaweed blooms, generally considered to depend on grazing of the seaweed, and replenishment of corals by larvae that successfully recruit to damaged reefs. These processes usually take years to decades to bring a reef back to coral dominance
Effects of pretreatment hypothermia during resuscitated porcine hemorrhagic shock
OBJECTIVES: Accidental hypothermia increases mortality and morbidity after hemorrhage, but controversial data are available on the effects of therapeutic hypothermia. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis whether moderate pretreatment hypothermia would beneficially influence organ dysfunction during long-term, porcine hemorrhage and resuscitation. DESIGN: Prospective, controlled, randomized study. SETTING: University animal research laboratory. SUBJECTS: Twenty domestic pigs of either gender. INTERVENTIONS: Using an extracorporeal heat exchanger, anesthetized and instrumented animals were maintained at 38 degrees C, 35 degrees C, or 32 degrees C core temperature and underwent 4 hours of hemorrhage (removal of 40% of the blood volume and subsequent blood removal/retransfusion to maintain mean arterial pressure at 30 mm Hg). Resuscitation comprised of hydroxyethyl starch and norepinephrine infusion titrated to maintain mean arterial pressure at preshock values. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Before, immediately at the end of, and 12 and 22 hours after hemorrhage, we measured systemic and regional hemodynamics (portal vein, hepatic and right kidney artery ultrasound flow probes) and oxygen transport, and nitric oxide and cytokine production. Hemostasis was assessed by rotation thromboelastometry. Postmortem biopsies were analyzed for histomorphology (hematoxylin and eosin staining) and markers of apoptosis (kidney Bcl-xL and caspase-3 expression). Hypothermia at 32 degrees C attenuated the shock-related lactic acidosis but caused metabolic acidosis, most likely resulting from reduced carbohydrate oxidation. Although hypothermia did not further aggravate shock-related coagulopathy, it caused a transitory attenuation of kidney and liver dysfunction, which was ultimately associated with reduced histological damage and more pronounced apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: During long-term porcine hemorrhage and resuscitation, moderate pretreatment hypothermia was associated with a transitory attenuation of organ dysfunction and less severe histological tissue damage despite more pronounced metabolic acidosis. This effect is possibly due to a switch from necrotic to apoptotic cell death, ultimately resulting from reduced tissue energy deprivation during the shock phase
The stellar content of the Hamburg/ESO survey. II. A large, homogeneously-selected sample of high latitude carbon stars
We present a sample of 403 faint high latitude carbon (FHLC) stars selected
from the digitized objective prism plates of the Hamburg/ESO Survey (HES).
Because of the ~15 Angstroem spectral resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio
of the HES prism spectra, our automated procedure based on the detection of C_2
and CN molecular bands permits high-confidence identification of carbon stars
without the need for follow-up spectroscopy. From a set of 329 plates (87% of
the survey), covering 6400 square degrees to a magnitude limit of V~16.5, we
analyze the selection efficiency and effective surface area of the HES FHLC
survey to date. The surface density of FHLC stars that we detect (0.072 +/-
0.005 square degrees) is 2-4 times higher than that of previous objective prism
and CCD surveys at high galactic latitude, even though those surveys claimed a
limiting magnitude up to 1.5 magnitudes fainter. This attests to the highest

[Extract] This report provides an independent synthesis of the current knowledge of the effects of dredging and sediment disposal on the physico-chemical environment and the biological values of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (World Heritage Area), as assessed by an Expert Panel.
Dredging and sediment disposal can change the physical and chemical environment and affect the biological values of the World Heritage Area. Many of these effects will be context dependent and will differ between locations, types and extent of dredging and sediment disposal activities. On the nature of the FBS blue stellar objects and the completeness of the Bright Quasar Survey. II
In Paper I (Mickaelian et al. 1999), we compared the surface density of QSOs
in the Bright Quasar Survey (BQS) and in the First Byurakan Survey (FBS) and
concluded that the completeness of the BQS is of the order of 70% rather than
30-50% as suggested by several authors. A number of new observations recently
became available, allowing a re-evaluation of this completeness. We now obtain
a surface density of QSOs brighter than B = 16.16 in a subarea of the FBS
covering ~2250 deg^2, equal to 0.012 deg^-2 (26 QSOs), implying a completeness

Detection of Weak Circumstellar Gas around the DAZ White Dwarf WD 1124-293: Evidence for the Accretion of Multiple Asteroids
Single metal polluted white dwarfs with no dusty disks are believed to be
actively accreting metals from a circumstellar disk of gas caused by the
destruction of asteroids perturbed by planetary systems. We report, for the
first time, the detection of circumstellar Ca~II gas in absorption around the
DAZ WD~1124-293, which lacks an infrared excess. We constrain the gas to 7
and 32000~AU, and estimate it to be at 54~R,
well within WD~1124-293's tidal disruption radius. This detection is based on
several epochs of spectroscopy around the Ca~II H and K lines
(=3968\AA, 3933\AA) with the MIKE spectrograph on the Magellan/Clay
Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We confirm the circumstellar nature of
the gas by observing nearby sightlines and finding no evidence for gas from the
local interstellar medium. Through archival data we have measured the
equivalent width of the two photospheric Ca lines over a period of 11 years. We
see 5-7\% epoch-to-epoch variation in equivalent widths over this time
period, and no evidence for long term trends. The presence of a circumstellar
gas implies a near edge-on inclination to the system, thus we place limits to
short period transiting planetary companions with R R using
the WASP survey. The presence of gas in orbit around WD~1124-293 implies that
most DAZs could harbor planetary systems. Since 25-30\% of white dwarfs show
metal line absorption, the dynamical process for perturbing small bodies must

Improving spatial prioritisation for remote marine regions: optimising biodiversity conservation and sustainable development trade-offs
Creating large conservation zones in remote areas, with less intense stakeholder overlap and limited environmental information, requires periodic review to ensure zonation mitigates primary threats and fill gaps in representation, while achieving conservation targets. Follow-up reviews can utilise improved methods and data, potentially identifying new planning options yielding a desirable balance between stakeholder interests. This research explored a marine zoning system in north-west Australia–abiodiverse area with poorly documented biota. Although remote, it is economically significant (i.e. petroleum extraction and fishing). Stakeholder engagement was used to source the best available biodiversity and socio-economic data and advanced spatial analyses produced 765 high resolution data layers, including 674 species distributions representing 119 families. Gap analysis revealed the current proposed zoning system as inadequate, with 98.2% of species below the Convention on Biological Diversity 10% representation targets. A systematic conservation planning algorithm Maxan provided zoning options to meet representation targets while balancing this with industry interests. Resulting scenarios revealed that conservation targets could be met with minimal impacts on petroleum and fishing industries, with estimated losses of 4.9% and 7.2% respectively.
