Solar radius measurements
Preliminary results of measurements made during 1979-1980 are discussed. Variability in the radius measurements of 0.4 pi is found, of unknown origin
Use of thermal inertia determined by HCMM to predict nocturnal cold prone areas in Florida
The HCMM transparency scenes for the available winter of 1978-1979 were evaluated; scenes were identified on processed magnetic tapes; other remote sensing information was identified; and a soil heat flux model with variable-depth thermal profile was developed. The Image 100 system was used to compare HCMM and GOES transparent images of surface thermal patterns. Excellent correspondence of patterns was found, with HCMM giving the greater resolution. One image shows details of thermal patterns in Florida that are attributable to difference in near surface water contents. The wide range of surface temperatures attributable to surface thermal inertia that exist in the relatively flat Florida topography is demonstrated
SMP: A solid modeling program
A prototype solid modeling program, SMP, developed by CSC for Langley Research Center (LaRC) is documented in this paper. The SMP software is employed by the System and Experiments Branch (SEB) of the Space Systems Division (SSD) for preliminary space station design, but is intended as a general purpose tool. The SMP document provides details concerning: the basic geometric modeling primitives and associated operators, the data representation scheme utilized to structure the geometric model, the available commands for both editing and displaying the solid model, the interactive user interface and the input/output interfaces to external software, and the utility of the package in the LaRC computing environment. The document is sufficiently detailed to serve both as a user's guide and reference manual
Use of thermal inertia determined by HCMM to predict nocturnal cold prone areas in Florida
Surface temperatures derived from HCMM data were compared with to those obtained by GOES satellite and the apparent thermal inertia (ATI) calculated. For two dates, the HCMM temperatures appear to be about 5 C lower than the GOES temperatures. The ATI for excessively-drained to well-drained mineral soils was greater than for drained organic soils possibly because of long periods of low rainfall during late 1980 and early 1981. Organic soils cropped to sugar cane showed lower ATI after a severe killing freeze. With dead leaves, there was less transpiration and more solar radiation probably reached the dark soil surface. This would explain the larger diurnal temperature amplitude observed

Transparencies, prints, and computer compatible tapes of temperature differential and thermal inertia for the winter of 1978 to 1979 were obtained. Thermal inertial differences in the South Florida depicted include: drained organic soils of the Everglades agricultural area, undrained organic soils of the managed water conservation areas of the South Florida water management district, the urbanized area around Miami, Lake Okeechobee, and the mineral soil west of the Everglades agricultural area. The range of wetlands and uplands conditions within the Suwanee River basin was also identified. It is shown that the combination of wetlands uplands surface features of Florida yield a wide range of surface temperatures related to wetness of the surface features
4D STEM: high efficiency phase contrast imaging using a fast pixelated detector
Phase contrast imaging is widely used for imaging beam sensitive and weak phase objects in electron microscopy. In this work we demonstrate the achievement of high efficient phase contrast imaging in STEM using the pnCCD, a fast direct electron pixelated detector, which records the diffraction patterns at every probe position with a speed of 1000 to 4000 frames per second, forming a 4D STEM dataset simultaneously with the incoherent Z-contrast imaging. Ptychographic phase reconstruction has been applied and the obtained complex transmission function reveals the phase of the specimen. The results using GaN and Ti, Nd- doped BiFeO3 show that this imaging mode is especially powerful for imaging light elements in the presence of much heavier elements
Computer generated animation and movie production at LARC: A case study
The process of producing computer generated 16mm movies using the MOVIE.BYU software package developed by Brigham Young University and the currently available hardware technology at the Langley Research Center is described. A general overview relates the procedures to a specific application. Details are provided which describe the data used, preparation of a storyboard, key frame generation, the actual animation, title generation, filming, and processing/developing the final product. Problems encountered in each of these areas are identified. Both hardware and software problems are discussed along with proposed solutions and recommendations
SMP: A solid modeling program version 2.0
The Solid Modeling Program (SMP) provides the capability to model complex solid objects through the composition of primitive geometric entities. In addition to the construction of solid models, SMP has extensive facilities for model editing, display, and analysis. The geometric model produced by the software system can be output in a format compatible with existing analysis programs such as PATRAN-G. The present version of the SMP software supports six primitives: boxes, cones, spheres, paraboloids, tori, and trusses. The details for creating each of the major primitive types is presented. The analysis capabilities of SMP, including interfaces to existing analysis programs, are discussed
Notes towards an evaluation of The Office of Children’s Rights Commissioner for London: Phase 1. 2000-2001
This report records phase I of an evaluation of the Office of Children's Rights Commissioner for London (the Office) over the first 18 months of its 3 year life. This can be only a partial evaluation, not a definitive or conclusive one. We observed processes, progress and interim outcomes, and collected young people’s and adults’ views about the Office. Some of the findings could be used as baseline data in a second phase evaluation, for later comparison. The Office is due to close in April 2003. Section 1 explains how the Office was set up, and its staffing and objectives. We report the SSRU evaluation plans and activities, besides the social context of the Office’s work, and background debates about children’s right and abilities to participate as citizens. Section 2 reviews in more detail the Office’s activities in connection with its eight original aims recorded in 1998 in its funding applications. Section 3 records the views of children and adults about children’s rights in London and the work of the Office. The groups range from people working in the Office, to young people in schools and other settings, to policy makers. Section 4 summarises how our findings so far answer the evaluation questions set out in 2000 in our original protocol. Appendix 1 outlines the case for a national Children’s Rights Commissioner. Appendix 2 gives further details about the evaluation, and Appendix 3 reviews the problems of doing evaluations in general, and of doing evaluations for and with children in particular
