    The Sloan Lens ACS Survey. VIII. The relation between environment and internal structure of early-type galaxies

    We study the relation between the internal structure of early-type galaxies and their environment using 70 strong gravitational lenses from the Sloan ACS Lens Survey. The Sloan database is used to determine two measures of overdensity of galaxies around each lens: the projected number density of galaxies inside the tenth nearest neighbor (\Sigma_{10}) and within a cone of radius one h^{-1} Mpc (D_1). Our main results are: 1) The average overdensity is somewhat larger than unity, consistent with lenses preferring overdense environments as expected for massive early-type galaxies (12/70 lenses are in known groups/clusters). 2) The distribution of overdensities is indistinguishable from that of "twin" non-lens galaxies selected from SDSS to have the same redshift and stellar velocity dispersion \sigma_*. Thus, within our errors, lens galaxies are an unbiased population, and the SLACS results can be generalized to the overall population of early-type galaxies. 3) Typical contributions from external mass distribution are no more than a few per cent, reaching 10-20% (~0.05-0.10 external convergence) only in the most extreme overdensities. 4) No significant correlation between overdensity and slope of the mass density profile of the lens is found. 5) Satellite galaxies (those with a more luminous companion) have marginally steeper mass density profiles than central galaxies (those without). This result suggests that tidal stripping may affect the mass structure of early-type galaxies down to kpc scales probed by strong lensing, when they fall into larger structures [ABRIDGED].Comment: ApJ, in press; minor changes with respect to v

    This paper presents the working principle, design, and fabrication of a silicon-based scanning micromirror with a new type of action mechanism as an example of MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems). Micromirrors can be found in barcode readers as well as micro-projectors, optical coherence tomography, or spectrometers’ adjustable filters. The fabrication process of the device prompted us to describe and discuss the problems related to the manufacture of MEMS. The article starts with some terminology and a brief introduction to the field of microsystems. Afterwards, the concept of a new scanning micromirror is explained. The device is operated by two pairs of thermal bimorphs. A special design enables to maintain a constant distance from the center of the mirror to the light source during the scanning process. The device was implemented in a one degree-of-freedom micromirror and a two degree-of-freedom micromirror. The fabrication process of both types is described. For each case, a different type of substrate was used. The first type of substrate was a standard silicon wafer; the second one, SOI (Silicon-On-Insulator). The process with the first one was complicated and caused many problems. Replacing this substrate with SOI solved some of the issues, but did not prevent new ones from arising. Nevertheless, the SOI substrate produces much better results and it is preferable to manufacture this type of MEMS devices.Este trabajo muestra un mecanismo de acción, un diseño y una fabricación de un nuevo dispositivo de escaneo - un micro-espejo. Los micro-espejos se pueden encontrar en los lectores de códigos de barras, así como en los micro proyectores, en sistemas de tomografía óptica coherente, o en los filtros ajustables de espectrómetros. El proceso de formación del nuevo dispositivo nos llevó a describir y discutir los problemas relacionados con la fabricación de MEMS (sistemas microelectrónicos). En primer lugar, se da una terminología y una breve introducción al campo de los microsistemas. A continuación, se explica un concepto del nuevo micro-espejo de escanéo. El dispositivo es accionado por dos pares de actuadores termo-bimorfos. Un diseño especial permite mantener la distancia constante desde el centro del espejo a la fuente de luz durante el proceso de escaneo. El dispositivo se implementó en dos versiones: un micro-espejo con un grado de libertad y un micro-espejo con dos grados de libertad. Se describe un proceso de fabricación para los dos tipos del dispositivo que utiliza dos tipos diferentes de sustrato. El primer tipo de sustrato corresponde a una oblea de silicio estándar, el segundo substrato corresponde a un SOI (Silicon-On-Insulator). El proceso con la oblea de silicio estándar fue complicado y causó muchos problemas. Cambiar el sustrato a SOI ayudó a resolver algunos de ellos, pero no permitió evitar algunos nuevos. Sin embargo, el sustrato SOI da mejores resultados y se encuentra que es preferible fabricar dispositivos MEMS de este tipo

    Response Types and Factors Associated with Response Types to Biologic Therapies in Patients with Moderate-to-Severe Plaque Psoriasis from Two Randomized Clinical Trials.

    This study aimed to understand treatment response dynamics, including factors associated with favorable response, among patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis who received guselkumab, adalimumab, or secukinumab. These post hoc analyses used data from the phase III clinical trials ECLIPSE and VOYAGE 1, which were conducted between September 2021 and November 2022. On the basis of absolute Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (aPASI) scores, patients were divided into short-term response types (SRT1-6, based on week 20-48 response) and long-term response types (LRT1-4, based on week 52-252 response). Response types (RTs) were based on aPASI cutoffs deemed clinically relevant by the investigators; SRT1/LRT1 were the most favorable response types. Baseline characteristics were compared across RTs, and logistic regression analyses established factors associated with SRT1/LRT1. Overall, 1045, 662, and 272 patients were included in the ECLIPSE short-term, VOYAGE 1 short-term, and VOYAGE 1 long-term analyses, respectively. Mean age, body mass index (BMI), baseline aPASI score, and body surface area were lower in SRT1 than SRT6. In VOYAGE 1, adalimumab treatment, high BMI, and current/former smoking status resulted in less favorable responses. In the VOYAGE 1 long-term analysis, patients in LRT4 had the highest baseline aPASI score, were older, and were more often obese compared with other LRT groups. Regression analyses showed that SRT1 (both treatments) in VOYAGE 1 and ECLIPSE, and LRT1 (guselkumab group) in the VOYAGE 1 long-term analysis, were associated with week 16 aPASI response. In VOYAGE 1, SRT1 was associated with psoriasis duration and smoking status. Early treatment response and baseline characteristics, including smoking, psoriasis duration, and obesity, may be associated with longer-term response to biologics.     Hydrogen atom in a spherical well: linear approximation

    We discuss the boundary effects on a quantum system by examining the problem of a hydrogen atom in a spherical well. By using an approximation method which is linear in energy we calculate the boundary corrections to the ground-state energy and wave function.     Low cost production of computer-generated holograms: from design to optical evaluation

    In this work we review some optical characterization methods useful for the low cost production of two phase level computer generated holograms (CGH). As an example, binary CGH are designed with an iterative Fourier transform algorithm (IFTA) and fabricated on a silicon master micromachining with a single step of selective dry etch of silicon dioxide (SiO2) layer. The CGH characterization is performed in three steps; a first one involves the application of spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements to accurately measure the thickness of the SiO2 layer. These results permit the evaluation of the relative complex reflectance between the two levels of the developed hologram as a function of the wavelength. In a second step, interference microscopy is applied to directly visualize the phase shift in the SiO2/Si binary phase profile. Finally, the performance and diffraction efficiency of the fabricated CGH is compared for various lasers with different wavelengths. These experimental measurements in these two last steps confirm with very good accuracy the results derived from the spectroscopic ellipsometry analysis. In conjunction, the combination of these well established optical techniques provides a precise optical characterization of binary diffractive optical elements produced with simple and low cost technique, useful for mass production

    The technology and performances of a micromachined channel waveguides, based on PECVD deposition of silicon oxynitride (SiOxNy) thin films, is presented. The deposition parameters of the PECVD process are studied in connection with their optical, mechanical and chemical properties. Waveguide deign is optimized allowing single mode, low loss propagation and high efficiency of coupling with single mode optical fiber. The proposed technology is applied to fabricate the pigtailed Mach-Zehnder interferometers, where the coupling from optical fiber to waveguide is based on the etch of U-grooves, supporting fibers in the same substrate as the waveguide substrate

    Matrixes of unconventional micro-optical components molded with etched silicon

    This paper reports on a process to create microlenses characterized by unconventional footprints, spherical profiles and a wide range of sizes. Fabricated shapes such as squares, rectangles, ellipses, triangles and hexagons are tested alone as well as in matrix with high fulfill factors. The technique is based on molds from which microlenses are fabricated by UV-molding replication. The molds are produced by silicon wet isotropic etching in an acid solution. The process is mainly steered by temperature and etching concentration. The use of the proposed technology opens a wide range of geometries allowing the fabrication of microlenses matrices with high fulfill factors as well as microlenses for beam-shaping

    Altered gut microbiome in Parkinson\u27s disease and the influence of lipopolysaccharide in a human α-synuclein over-expressing mouse model

    The interaction between the gut microbiota and alpha-synuclein (αSyn) aggregation in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is receiving increasing attention. The objective of this study was to investigate gut microbiota, and effects of an inflammatory lipopolysaccharide (LPS) trigger in a human αSyn over-expressing mouse model of PD (Thy1-αSyn). Stool samples from patients with confirmed PD and Thy1-αSyn mice were analyzed using 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing. Compared to healthy controls, the relative abundance of mucin-degrading Verrucomicrobiae and LPS-producing Gammaproteobacteria were greater in PD patients. In mice, the abundance of Gammaproteobacteria was negligible in both Thy1-αSyn and wild-type (WT) animals, while Verrucomicrobiae were reduced in Thy1-αSyn mice. The effect of LPS on intestinal barrier function was investigated in vitro using intestinal epithelial (IEC-6) cells, and in vivo via administration of LPS in drinking water to Thy1-αSyn mice. Acute exposure to LPS in vitro resulted in a reduction and altered distribution of the tight junction markers ZO-1 and e-Cadherin around the cell membrane in IEC-6 cells, as shown by immunohistochemistry. LPS administration in Thy1-αSyn mice resulted in the emergence of early motor manifestations at 10 weeks, compared to untreated mice who were still asymptomatic at this age. This study reaffirms that an altered microbiome exists in patients with PD, and supports the notion of a proinflammatory gut microbiome environment as a trigger for PD pathogenesis
