A coral reef as an analogical model to promote collaborative learning on cultural and ethnic diversity in science
An exercise designed to engage students in critical thinking and active conversation about gender, diversity, and ethnicity in science is described. First semester college science students frequently do not realize that individual scholarship is an integral component of global scholarship and that scientific progress stems from the scholarly contributions of numerous individuals. The described exercise initially uses a collage of a coral reefâchosen both for its visual impact and because it is an excellent model of diversityâhighlighting various aspects of life on a reef. This is followed by a trawl of library resources to enable the development of a chronology of significant contributions and practices in the field of medicine and the identification of historical and contemporary scholars and practitioners by race, cultural heritage, and gender

On the stratified dust distribution of the GG Tau circumbinary ring
Our objective is to study the vertical dust distribution in the circumbinary
ring of the binary system GG Tau and to search for evidence of stratification,
one of the first steps expected to occur during planet formation.
We present a simultaneous analysis of four scattered light images spanning a
range of wavelength from 800 nm to 3800 nm and compare them with (i) a
parametric prescription for the vertical dust stratification, and (ii) with the
results of SPH bi-fluid hydrodynamic calculations.
The parametric prescription and hydrodynamical calculations of stratification
both reproduce the observed brightness profiles well. These models also provide
a correct match for the observed star/ring integrated flux ratio. Another
solution with a well-mixed, but ``exotic'', dust size distribution also matches
the brightness profile ratios but fails to match the star/ring flux ratio.
These results give support to the presence of vertical stratification of the
dust in the ring of GG Tau and further predict the presence of a radial

Astrophysical and Cosmological Information from Large-scale sub-mm Surveys of Extragalactic Sources
We present a quantitative analysis of the astrophysical and cosmological
information that can be extracted from the many important wide-area, shallow
surveys that will be carried out in the next few years. Our calculations
combine the predictions of the physical model by Granato et al. (2004) for the
formation and evolution of spheroidal galaxies with up-to-date phenomenological
models for the evolution of starburst and normal late-type galaxies and of
radio sources. We compute the expected number counts and the redshift
distributions of these source populations separately and then focus on
proto-spheroidal galaxies. For the latter objects we predict the counts and
redshift distributions of strongly lensed sources at 250, 350, 500, and 850
micron, the angular correlation function of sources detected in the surveys
considered, the angular power spectra due to clustering of sources below the
detection limit in Herschel and Planck surveys. An optimal survey for selecting
strongly lensed proto-spheroidal galaxies is described, and it is shown how
they can be easily distinguished from the other source populations. We also
discuss the detectability of the imprints of the 1-halo and 2-halo regimes on
angular correlation functions and clustering power spectra, as well as the
constraints on cosmological parameters that can be obtained from the
determinations of these quantities. The novel data relevant to derive the first
sub-millimeter estimates of the local luminosity functions of starburst and
late-type galaxies, and the constraints on the properties of rare source

Duality for massive spin two theories in arbitrary dimensions
Using the parent Lagrangian approach we construct a dual formulation, in the
sense originally proposed by Curtright and Freund, of a massive spin two
Fierz-Pauli theory in arbitrary dimensions . This is achieved in terms of a
mixed symmetry tensor , without the need of
auxiliary fields. The relation of this method with an alternative formulation
based on a gauge symmetry principle proposed by Zinoviev is elucidated. We show
that the latter formulation in four dimensions, with a given gauge fixing
together with a definite sequence of auxiliary fields elimination via their
equations of motion, leads to the parent Lagrangian already considered by West
completed by a Fierz-Pauli mass term, which in turns yields the
Curtright-Freund action. This motivates our generalization to arbitrary
dimensions leading to the corresponding extension of the four dimensional
result. We identify the transverse true degrees of freedom of the dual theory
and verify that their number is in accordance with those of the massive

Statistics of the fractional polarisation of extragalactic dusty sources in Planck HFI maps
We estimate the average fractional polarisation at 143, 217 and 353 GHz of a
sample of 4697 extragalactic dusty sources by applying stacking technique. The
sample is selected from the second version of the Planck Catalogue of Compact
Sources at 857 GHz, avoiding the region inside the Planck Galactic mask (fsky ~
60 per cent). We recover values for the mean fractional polarisation at 217 and
353 GHz of (3.10 \pm 0.75) per cent and (3.65 \pm 0.66) per cent, respectively,
whereas at 143 GHz we give a tentative value of (3.52 \pm 2.48) per cent. We
discuss the possible origin of the measured polarisation, comparing our new
estimates with those previously obtained from a sample of radio sources. We
test different distribution functions and we conclude that the fractional
polarisation of dusty sources is well described by a log-normal distribution,
as determined in the radio band studies. For this distribution we estimate
{\mu}_{217GHz} = 0.3 \pm 0.5 (that would correspond to a median fractional
polarisation of {\Pi}_{med} = (1.3 \pm 0.7) per cent) and {\mu}_{353GHz} = 0.7
\pm 0.4 ({\Pi}_{med} = (2.0 \pm 0.8) per cent), {\sigma}_{217GHz} = 1.3 \pm 0.2
and {\sigma}_{353GHz} = 1.1 \pm 0.2. With these values we estimate the source
number counts in polarisation and the contribution given by these sources to
the CMB B-mode angular power spectrum at 217, 353, 600 and 800 GHz. We conclude
that extragalactic dusty sources might be an important contaminant for the
