Relation of Root and Shoot Morphology of Grass Seedlings
Grass seedling establishment is dependent on adventitious root development. However, evaluating the establishment status of a seeding by excavating a population of seedlings and determining root morphology is difficult and generally will not be undertaken. Based on both field and greenhouse studies we have found that root and shoot morphological development is closely related within species, for intermediate wheatgrass, [Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkw. and D.R. Dewey], smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), and big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) seedling populations. Easily observable developmental stages of seedling shoots were related to adventitious root development. When the average stage of the population of shoots of these grasses reaches three to four collared leaves for intermediate wheatgrass and smooth bromegrass, first secondary tiller for switchgrass and the four to six collared leaf stage for big bluestem, there was an average of two to three adventitious roots which indicates the onset of seedling establishment
Comparison of the use of sodium carbonate (washing soda crystals) and apomorphine for inducing emesis in dogs
Objective: To describe the use of sodium carbonate and apomorphine in a historical cohort of dogs, compare the occurrence of emesis and report any adverse effects recorded. Methods: This historical, observational study included information from medical records of dogs that received an emetic agent. The occurrence of emesis with apomorphine or sodium carbonate was calculated and the association between emesis and agent was explored, with the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) reported. A non-inferiority analysis of the occurrence of emesis for sodium carbonate was performed against an equivalence range of ±7% of the estimated occurrence of emesis with apomorphine. Owners were emailed a short survey about their dog's health after their visit to the hospital for induced emesis. Results: Records for 787 dogs seen from January 2007 to December 2013 were included. For apomorphine, 382/392 dogs showed emesis (97%, 95% CI 95–100%). For sodium carbonate, 320/395 dogs showed emesis (81%, 95% CI 77–85%), which fell below the equivalence range for apomorphine (97 ± 7%, 90–100%) and was considered inferior. The odds ratio of emesis with apomorphine to sodium carbonate was 9.0 (95% CI 4.6–17.6). Of 18 responses to the survey, 5 reported abnormalities after emesis (3 with sodium carbonate, 2 with apomorphine). Conclusion: The occurrence of emesis with sodium carbonate was high but inferior to apomorphine. However, the advantages of sodium carbonate, including less expense and ease of accession compared with apomorphine, make it a viable choice in emergency medicine

Statistical Agent Based Modelization of the Phenomenon of Drug Abuse
We introduce a statistical agent based model to describe the phenomenon of
drug abuse and its dynamical evolution at the individual and global level. The
agents are heterogeneous with respect to their intrinsic inclination to drugs,
to their budget attitude and social environment. The various levels of drug use
were inspired by the professional description of the phenomenon and this
permits a direct comparison with all available data. We show that certain
elements have a great importance to start the use of drugs, for example the
rare events in the personal experiences which permit to overcame the barrier of
drug use occasionally. The analysis of how the system reacts to perturbations
is very important to understand its key elements and it provides strategies for
effective policy making. The present model represents the first step of a
realistic description of this phenomenon and can be easily generalized in

Estimating the change in asymptotic direction due to secular changes in the geomagnetic field
The concept of geomagnetic optics, as described by the asymptotic directions of approach, is extremely useful in the analysis of cosmic radiation data. However, when changes in cutoff occur as a result of evolution in the geomagnetic field, there are corresponding changes in the asymptotic cones of acceptance. A method is introduced of estimating the change in the asymptotic direction of approach for vertically incident cosmic ray particles from a reference set of directions at a specific epoch by considering the change in the geomagnetic cutoff
A comparison of the distribution of pneumococcal types in systemic disease and the upper respiratory tract in adults and children
The serotype distribution of 874 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae was determined in relation to patients' age and to frequency of isolation from systemic disease. Types 14 and 18, in pre-school children, and types 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12 in patients over 5 years of age were significantly associated with systemic disease whereas type 23 in pre-school children, and type 6 in older patients was associated with upper respiratory tract carriage. No significant difference was found in the incidence of other types in systemic disease compared to upper respiratory tract carriage. Fifteen diagnostic pneumococcal antisera (to types 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 17, 18, 19, 22 and 23) sufficed for typing 87% of strains
Jahn-Teller distortions and phase separation in doped manganites
A "minimal model" of the Kondo-lattice type is used to describe a competition
between the localization and metallicity in doped manganites and related
magnetic oxides with Jahn-Teller ions. It is shown that the number of itinerant
charge carriers can be significantly lower than that implied by the doping
level x. A strong tendency to the phase separation is demonstrated for a wide
range of intermediate doping concentrations vanishing at low and high doping.
The phase diagram of the model in the x-T plane is constructed. At low
temperatures, the system is in a state with a long-range magnetic order:
antiferromagnetic (AF), ferromagnetic (FM), or AF-FM phase separated (PS)
state. At high temperatures, there can exist two types of the paramagnetic (PM)
state with zero and nonzero density of the itinerant electrons. In the
intermediate temperature range, the phase diagram includes different kinds of
the PS states: AF-FM, FM-PM, and PM with different content of itinerant
electrons. The applied magnetic field changes the phase diagram favoring the FM
ordering. It is shown that the variation of temperature or magnetic field can
