Improving Symptomatic Postural Tachycardia with Pharmacotherapy versus Physical Conditioning

An estimated one to three million Americans are affected by orthostatic intolerance, with females under age 35 the most common. Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disorder marked by symptoms of orthostatic intolerance within the first ten minutes of a patient moving from supine to an upright standing position. Patients must experience a sustained heart rate increase of at least 30 bpm (40 for pediatric patients) or greater than 120 bpm in the absence of orthostatic hypotension (OH). A thorough clinical evaluation should be performed prior to head-up tilt (HUT) testing to exclude other causes of tachycardia

Pen-based computers: Computers without keys

The National Space Transportation System (NSTS) is comprised of many diverse and highly complex systems incorporating the latest technologies. Data collection associated with ground processing of the various Space Shuttle system elements is extremely challenging due to the many separate processing locations where data is generated. This presents a significant problem when the timely collection, transfer, collation, and storage of data is required. This paper describes how new technology, referred to as Pen-Based computers, is being used to transform the data collection process at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Pen-Based computers have streamlined procedures, increased data accuracy, and now provide more complete information than previous methods. The end results is the elimination of Shuttle processing delays associated with data deficiencies

Investing in the Future: Addressing Work/Life Issues of Employees

The Extension organization has a long tradition of professional service to clientele, often at a cost of sacrifice to family and self. The results of a national study indicated that work/life issues are of great concern. Employees identified the most critical work/life challenges as: 1) a heavy work load, 2) evening and weekend time commitments, and 3) lack of control or job autonomy. The recommendations, based on this study, urged Extension administrators throughout the organization to reduce the workload and time requirements of county-based professionals and contended that policies needed to be consistent within the national Extension system

Scaffolding School Pupils’ Scientific Argumentation with Evidence-Based Dialogue Maps

This chapter reports pilot work investigating the potential of Evidence-based Dialogue Mapping to scaffold young teenagers’ scientific argumentation. Our research objective is to better understand pupils’ usage of dialogue maps created in Compendium to write scientific ex-planations. The participants were 20 pupils, 12-13 years old, in a summer science course for “gifted and talented” children in the UK. Through qualitative analysis of three case studies, we investigate the value of dialogue mapping as a mediating tool in the scientific reasoning process during a set of learning activities. These activities were published in an online learning envi-ronment to foster collaborative learning. Pupils mapped their discussions in pairs, shared maps via the online forum and in plenary discussions, and wrote essays based on their dialogue maps. This study draws on these multiple data sources: pupils’ maps in Compendium, writings in science and reflective comments about the uses of mapping for writing. Our analysis highlights the diversity of ways, both successful and unsuccessful, in which dialogue mapping was used by these young teenagers

The effect of pre-reading instruction on vocabulary learning: An examination of L1 and L2 readers’ eye movements

This study examines the effect of pre-reading vocabulary instruction on learners’ attention and vocabulary gains. Participants (L1 = 92; L2 = 88) were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: pre-reading instruction, involving explicit instruction of six novel items and reading a text with them repeated eight times; reading-only, which only involved reading the text with the novel items; reading-baseline, in which participants read a text with the repeated items replaced by known (control) words; and instruction-only, which involved explicit instruction of the novel items and the reading of an unrelated text. Eye-tracking was used to measure amount of attention to the vocabulary during reading. Knowledge of the target vocabulary was assessed in three immediate post-tests (form recognition, meaning recall, and meaning recognition). Results showed that pre-reading instruction led to both higher vocabulary gains and a processing advantage. Cumulative reading times were a significant predictor of meaning recognition scores

A Systems Approach: Maximizing Individual Career Potential and Organizational Success

Continuing professional development for employees is critical to meet the demands and expectations of the evolving workplace. In the search for career fulfillment, individuals may no longer plan to spend their entire work lives in one organization. Maximizing an individual\u27s career potential to enhance the success of the organization calls for a systems approach in career development. Systems approaches are implemented in a manner that enables the individual to enter and exit the model at the most appropriate point. This article provides an overview of the professional development model in a systems context used by Ohio State University Extension and its application in changing organizations

A Longitudinal Study of the Evolution of Organizational Values of Ohio State University Extension Educators

A 2001 replication of a 1991 study investigated the evolution of OSU Extension organizational values. For almost a decade, the 1991 values were used by administrators for decision making and policy development. The authors used a census and Values Questionnaire to collect data. The authors identified 10 of the 12 original organizational values as current OSU Extension organizational values. The strength and stability of its organizational values may be both a source of continuity for OSU Extension during times of rapid social and fiscal change, as well as a source of frustration for leaders seeking to reshape the organization\u27s culture
