Right-handed neutrinos and the CDF II anomaly

Artículo escrito por un elevado número de autores, solo se referencian el que aparece en primer lugar, el nombre del grupo de colaboración, si le hubiere, y los autores pertenecientes a la UAMWe point out that right-handed neutrinos can resolve the tension between the latest CDF II measurement of MW and the SM. Integrating out the new states yields a single d = 6 operator, which translates into a nonunitary leptonic mixing matrix. This alters the extraction of GF from muon decay and increases the prediction for MW, in line with the CDF II result. We find that this explanation worsens the so-called Cabibbo anomaly, which could still be explained through the same d = 6 operator if it is not generated by right-handed neutrinos. Exploiting the flavor dependence, a common explanation of both anomalies would a priori be possible, but is ruled out by weak universality constraint

Sensitive High-Frequency Hearing in Earless and Partially Eared Harlequin Frogs (Atelopus)

Harlequin frogs, genus Atelopus, communicate at high frequencies despite most species lacking a complete tympanic middle ear that facilitates high-frequency hearing in most anurans and other tetrapods. Here, we tested whether Atelopus are better at sensing high-frequency acoustic sound compared with other eared and earless species in the Bufonidae family, determined whether middle ear variation within Atelopus affects hearing sensitivity and tested potential hearing mechanisms in Atelopus. We determined that at high frequencies (2000–4000 Hz), Atelopus are 10–34 dB more sensitive than other earless bufonids but are relatively insensitive to mid-range frequencies (900–1500 Hz) compared with eared bufonids. Hearing among Atelopus species is fairly consistent, evidence that the partial middle ears present in a subset of Atelopus species do not convey a substantial hearing advantage. We further demonstrate that Atelopus hearing is probably not facilitated by vibration of the skin overlying the normal tympanic membrane region or the body lung wall, leaving the extratympanic hearing pathways in Atelopus enigmatic. Together, these results show Atelopus have sensitive high-frequency hearing without the aid of a tympanic middle ear and prompt further study of extratympanic hearing mechanisms in anurans

The Structure of a Biologically Active Influenza Virus Ribonucleoprotein Complex

The influenza viruses contain a segmented, single-stranded RNA genome of negative polarity. Each RNA segment is encapsidated by the nucleoprotein and the polymerase complex into ribonucleoprotein particles (RNPs), which are responsible for virus transcription and replication. Despite their importance, information about the structure of these RNPs is scarce. We have determined the three-dimensional structure of a biologically active recombinant RNP by cryo-electron microscopy. The structure shows a nonameric nucleoprotein ring (at 12 Ã… resolution) with two monomers connected to the polymerase complex (at 18 Ã… resolution). Docking the atomic structures of the nucleoprotein and polymerase domains, as well as mutational analyses, has allowed us to define the interactions between the functional elements of the RNP and to propose the location of the viral RNA. Our results provide the first model for a functional negative-stranded RNA virus ribonucleoprotein complex. The structure reported here will serve as a framework to generate a quasi-atomic model of the molecular machine responsible for viral RNA synthesis and to test new models for virus RNA replication and transcription

Estimación de los costes de construcción de viviendas rústicas mediante Redes Neuronales Artificiales

The Public Administration and the private developer seek to have a prior knowledge of the costs of any building. There are numerous methodologies in the literature that allow the real estate valuation of a property, but it has always been done for urban houses in large or medium-sized cities. This research proposes the use of Artificial Intelligence for the study of rustic houses in small cities such as Caceres (Spain). The research proposes a procedure of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to achieve on the one hand, to estimate, through an automatic method, the construction cost of rustic houses and, on the other hand, to identify the most determining attributes in its final price and its marginal weight. The designed ANN establishes as more influential variables in the final price of the property the wet spaces (bathrooms and kitchen), the constructed surface and the age in this order, differentiating themselves from the most determining variables in the price of urban houses in large or medium-sized cities that are the constructed surface and its location.La Administración Pública y el promotor privado buscan tener un conocimiento previo de los costes de cualquier edificación.
