    Evidence for the Band-Edge Exciton of CuInS2 Nanocrystals Enables Record Efficient Large-Area Luminescent Solar Concentrators

    AbstractTernary I‐III‐VI2 nanocrystals (NCs), such as CuInS2, are receiving attention as heavy‐metals‐free materials for solar cells, luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs), LEDs, and bio‐imaging. The origin of the optical properties of CuInS2 NCs are however not fully understood. A recent theoretical model suggests that their characteristic Stokes‐shifted and long‐lived luminescence arises from the structure of the valence band (VB) and predicts distinctive optical behaviours in defect‐free NCs: the quadratic dependence of the radiative decay rate and the Stokes shift on the NC radius. If confirmed, this would have crucial implications for LSCs as the solar spectral coverage ensured by low‐bandgap NCs would be accompanied by increased re‐absorption losses. Here, by studying stoichiometric CuInS2 NCs, it is revealed for the first time the spectroscopic signatures predicted for the free band‐edge exciton, thus supporting the VB‐structure model. At very low temperatures, the NCs also show dark‐state emission likely originating from enhanced electron‐hole spin interaction. The impact of the observed optical behaviours on LSCs is evaluated by Monte Carlo ray‐tracing simulations. Based on the emerging device design guidelines, optical‐grade large‐area (30×30 cm2) LSCs with optical power efficiency (OPE) as high as 6.8% are fabricated, corresponding to the highest value reported to date for large‐area devices

    An Italian prospective multicenter study on colonoscopy practice and quality: What has changed in the last 10 years

    Background: A relevant number of adenomas can be missed during colonoscopy. Aims: Assess the current status of colonoscopy procedures in Italian centers. Methods: A prospective observational study involving 17 hospitals (34 endoscopists) included consecutive patients undergoing standard colonoscopy. In the first phase, endoscopists performed consecutive colonoscopies. In the second phase, retraining via an online learning platform was planned, while in the third phase data were collected analogously to phase 1. Results: A total of 3,504 patients were enrolled. Overall, a BBPS score ≄6 was obtained in 95.6% of cases (94.8% and 96.9% in the pre- and post-training phases, respectively). 88.4% of colonoscopies had a withdrawal time ≄6 min (88.2% and 88.7% in the pre- and post-training phases). Median adenoma detection rate (ADR) was 39.1%, with no significant differences between the pre- and post-training phases (40.1% vs 36.9%; P = 0.83). In total, 81% of endoscopists had a ADR performance above the 25% threshold. Conclusion: High colonoscopy quality standards are achieved by the Italian hospitals involved. Quality improvement initiatives and repeated module-based colonoscopy-training have been promoted in Italy during the last decade, which appear to have had a significant impact on quality colonoscopy metrics together with the activation of colorectal cancer screening programs

    Oligomeric structures of cytosoluble estrogen-receptor complexes as studied by anti-estrogen receptor antibodies and chemical crosslinking of intact cells

    The structure of estrogen-receptor complexes recovered in cytosolic extracts of MCF-7 cells treated with hormone at 20 degrees was probed by chemical crosslinking of intact cells and sample analysis with four monoclonal anti-estrogen receptor antibodies. When MCF-7 cells were treated with either glutaraldehyde or dithiobis(succinimidyl propionate), cytosoluble estrogen-receptor complexes consisted of two major forms sedimenting as 4 S monomers and 8-9 S salt-resistant oligomers. By high salt sucrose density gradient centrifugation, we could observe that the four monoclonal anti-estrogen receptor antibodies bound different forms of receptor complexes from crosslinked cells. While H222 and H226 antibodies could interact with any form we detected, the D75 and D547 monoclonals could only recognize those showing sedimentation coefficients lower than 7 S. When cytosolic extracts from [S-35]-methionine-labeled cells were subjected to immunoprecipitation with H222 and D75 anti-estrogen receptor antibodies, electrophoretic analysis of material extracted from immunoprecipitates revealed the presence of 65 kDa estrogen receptors. If extracts were prepared from crosslinked cells, instead, two more components with estimated molecular masses of 220 and 100 kDa were specifically immunoprecipitated by the H222 antibody, whereas only the 100 kDa component and the estrogen receptor were found in immunoprecipitates obtained with the D75 monoclonal. When estrogen-receptor complexes were immunopurified from extracts prepared after cells had been crosslinked with dithiobis(succinimidyl propionate), and the oligomers were dissociated by treatment with beta-mercaptoethanol, electrophoretic analysis of our samples showed that only the 65 kDa estrogen receptor and a 50 kDa protein were selectively immunoprecipitated by anti-estrogen receptor antibodies. We concluded that the structures of cytosoluble estrogen-receptor complexes in MCF-7 cells treated with hormone at 2 degrees C, include oligomeric forms which contain a 50 kDa non-steroid binding protein

    On 20th and 29th of May 2012, two strong earthquakes and powerful aftershocks hit the Emilia region. In the territory of Modena, the local health authority decided to organize psychological and organizational support initiatives for the general population and healthcare workers (Hcws). In particular, in August 2012 a support program was started in order to help the Hcws to return to damaged workplaces. This initiative, supported by the local health authority management, provided counselling group sessions aimed to allow affected Hcws to share their earthquake experience and to increase their resilience. In addition, a survey conducted in collaboration with the Department of Psychology and the Department of Science Education of the University of Bologna studied the impact of the earthquake on the general population and the affected Hcws' coping strategies
