Two-dimensional gases of generalized statistics in a uniform magnetic field
We study the low temperature properties of two-dimensional ideal gases of
generalized statistics in a uniform magnetic field. The generalized statistics
considered here are the parafermion statistics and the exclusion statistics.
Similarity in the behaviours of the parafermion gas of finite order and the
gas with exclusion coefficient at very low temperatures is noted. These
two systems become exactly equivalent at . Qumtum Hall effect with these

A (p,q) Deformation of the Universal Enveloping Superalgebra U(osp(2/2))
We investigate a two parameter quantum deformation of the universal
enveloping orthosymplectic superalgebra U(osp(2/2)) by extending the
Faddeev-Reshetikhin-Takhtajan formalism to the supersymetric case. It is shown
that possesses a non-commutative, non-cocommutative Hopf
algebra structure. All the results are expressed in the standard form using

A Note on the Local Cosmological Constant and the Dark Energy Coincidence Problem
It has been suggested that the Dark Energy Coincidence Problem could be
interpreted as a possible link between the cosmological constant and a massive
graviton. We show that by using that link and models for the graviton mass a
dark energy density can be obtained that is indeed very close to measurements
by WMAP. As a consequence of the models, the cosmological constant was found to
depend on the density of matter. A brief outline of the cosmological
consequences such as the effect on the black hole solution is given
Nonlinear Hodge maps
We consider maps between Riemannian manifolds in which the map is a
stationary point of the nonlinear Hodge energy. The variational equations of
this functional form a quasilinear, nondiagonal, nonuniformly elliptic system
which models certain kinds of compressible flow. Conditions are found under
which singular sets of prescribed dimension cannot occur. Various degrees of
smoothness are proven for the sonic limit, high-dimensional flow, and flow
having nonzero vorticity. The gradient flow of solutions is estimated.

Generalization of Friedberg-Lee Symmetry
We study the possible origin of Friedberg-Lee symmetry. First, we propose the
generalized Friedberg-Lee symmetry in the potential by including the scalar
fields in the field transformations, which can be broken down to the FL
symmetry spontaneously. We show that the generalized Friedberg-Lee symmetry
allows a typical form of Yukawa couplings, and the realistic neutrino masses
and mixings can be generated via see-saw mechanism. If the right-handed
neutrinos transform non-trivially under the generalized Friedberg-Lee symmetry,
we can have the testable TeV scale see-saw mechanism. Second, we present two
models with the global flavour symmetry in the lepton
sector. After the flavour symmetry breaking, we can obtain the charged lepton
masses, and explain the neutrino masses and mixings via see-saw mechanism.
Interestingly, the complete neutrino mass matrices are similar to those of the
above models with generalized Friedberg-Lee symmetry. So the Friedberg-Lee
symmetry is the residual symmetry in the neutrino mass matrix after the

On the Connection Between Momentum Cutoff and Operator Cutoff Regularizations
Operator cutoff regularization based on the original Schwinger's proper-time
formalism is examined. By constructing a regulating smearing function for the
proper-time integration, we show how this regularization scheme simulates the
usual momentum cutoff prescription yet preserves gauge symmetry even in the
presence of the cutoff scales. Similarity between the operator cutoff
regularization and the method of higher (covariant) derivatives is also
observed. The invariant nature of the operator cutoff regularization makes it a
promising tool for exploring the renormalization group flow of gauge theories
in the spirit of Wilson-Kadanoff blocking transformation.Comment: 28 pages in plain TeX, no figures. revised and expande
The influence of structural defects on intra-granular critical currents of bulk MgB2
Bulk MgB2 samples were prepared under different synthesis conditions and
analyzed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The critical current
densities were determined from the magnetization versus magnetic field curves
of bulk and powder-dispersed-in-epoxy samples. Results show that through a slow
cooling process, the oxygen dissolved in bulk MgB2 at high synthesis
temperatures can segregate and form nanometer-sized coherent precipitates of
Mg(B,O)2 in the MgB2 matrix. Magnetization measurements indicate that these
precipitates act as effective flux pinning centers and therefore significantly

Geogrid-Reinforced Soil Mat for Temporary Support of Heavy Equipment
Concrete blocks were used in a temporary storage facility to support replacement steam generators for a nuclear power plant. From the subsurface investigation, it was found that direct ground support of these concrete blocks was not feasible. In order to avoid the use of piles and associated concrete pile cap, which would be costly and take longer to build, a geogrid-reinforced soil mat foundation was adopted. The concrete blocks were put on a steel plate, which in turn rested on the geogrid-reinforced soil mat. Upon completion of the geogrid-reinforced structural fill mat, the replacement steam generators were moved into the temporary storage facility. Settlement monitoring of the concrete blocks proceeded for more than five months and disclosed settlements that were larger than those calculated. However, the measured settlements were still relatively small and the geogrid-reinforced soil mat foundation performed satisfactorily
