Proper Motions in Kapteyn Selected Area 103: A Preliminary Orbit for the Virgo Stellar Stream
We present absolute proper motions in Kapteyn Selected Area (SA) 103. This
field is located 7 degrees west of the center of the Virgo Stellar Stream (VSS,
Duffau et al. 2006), and has a well-defined main sequence representing the
stream. In SA 103 we identify one RR Lyrae star as a member of the VSS
according to its metallicity, radial velocity and distance. VSS candidate
turnoff stars and subgiant stars have proper motions consistent with that of
the RR Lyrae star. The 3D velocity data imply an orbit with a pericenter of 11
kpc and an apocenter of ~90 kpc. Thus, the VSS comprises tidal debris found
near the pericenter of a highly destructive orbit. Examining the six globular
clusters at distances larger than 50 kpc from the Galactic center, and the
proposed orbit of the VSS, we find one tentative association, NGC 2419. We
speculate that NGC 2419 is possibly the nucleus of a disrupted system of which
the VSS is a part.Comment: ApJL accepte
Spectroscopy of Bright QUEST RR Lyrae Stars: Velocity Substructures toward Virgo
Using a sample of 43 bright (V<16.1, distance <13 kpc) RR Lyrae stars (RRLS)
from the QUEST survey with spectroscopic radial velocities and metallicities,
we find that several separate halo substructures contribute to the Virgo
overdensity (VOD). While there is little evidence for halo substructure in the
spatial distribution of these stars, their distribution in radial velocity
reveals two moving groups. These results are reinforced when the sample is
combined with a sample of blue horizontal branch stars that were identified in
the SDSS, and the combined sample provides evidence for one additional moving
group. These groups correspond to peaks in the radial velocity distribution of
a sample of F type main-sequence stars that was recently observed in the same
directon by SEGUE, although in one case the RRLS and F star groups may not lie
at the same distance. One of the new substructures has a very narrow range in
metallicity, which is more consistent with it being the debris from a destroyed
globular cluster than from a dwarf galaxy. A small concentration of stars have
radial velocities that are similar to the Virgo Stellar Stream (VSS) that was
identified previously in a fainter sample of RRLS. Our results suggest that
this feature extends to distances as short as ~12 kpc from its previous
detection at ~19 kpc. None of the new groups and only one star in the sample
have velocities that are consistent with membership in the leading tidal stream
from the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy, which some authors have suggested
is the origin of the VOD.Comment: Accepted for publication in the A
Spitzer observations of the Orion OB1 association: disk census in the low mass stars
We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of two fields in the
Orion OB1 association. We report here IRAC/MIPS observations for 115 confirmed
members and 41 photometric candidates of the ~10 Myr 25 Orionis aggregate in
the OB1a subassociation, and 106 confirmed members and 65 photometric
candidates of the 5 Myr region located in the OB1b subassociation. The 25
Orionis aggregate shows a disk frequency of 6% while the field in the OB1b
subassociation shows a disk frequency of 13%. Combining IRAC, MIPS and 2MASS
photometry we place stars bearing disks in several classes: stars with
optically thick disks (class II systems), stars with an inner transitional
disks (transitional disk candidates) and stars with "evolved disks"; the last
exhibit smaller IRAC/MIPS excesses than class II systems. In all, we identify 1
transitional disk candidate in the 25 Orionis aggregate and 3 in the OB1b
field; this represents ~10% of the disk bearing stars, indicating that the
transitional disk phase can be relatively fast. We find that the frequency of
disks is a function of the stellar mass, suggesting a maximum around stars with
spectral type M0. Comparing the infrared excess in the IRAC bands among several
stellar groups we find that inner disk emission decays with stellar age,
showing a correlation with the respective disk frequencies. The disk emission
at the IRAC and MIPS bands in several stellar groups indicates that disk
dissipation takes place faster in the inner region of the disks. Comparison
with models of irradiated accretion disks, computed with several degrees of
settling, suggests that the decrease in the overall accretion rate observed in
young stellar groups is not sufficient to explain the weak disk emission
observed in the IRAC bands for disk bearing stars with ages 5 Myr or older.Comment: Accepted in the Astrophysical Journa
Hydrogen vs. Battery in the long-term operation. A comparative between energy management strategies for hybrid renewable microgrids
The growth of the world’s energy demand over recent decades in relation to energy intensity and demography is clear. At the same time, the use of renewable energy sources is pursued to address decarbonization targets, but the stochasticity of renewable energy systems produces an increasing need for management systems to supply such energy volume while guaranteeing, at the same time, the security and reliability of the microgrids. Locally distributed energy storage systems (ESS) may provide the capacity to temporarily decouple production and demand. In this sense, the most implemented ESS in local energy districts are small–medium-scale electrochemical batteries. However, hydrogen systems are viable for storing larger energy quantities thanks to its intrinsic high mass-energy density. To match generation, demand and storage, energy management systems (EMSs) become crucial. This paper compares two strategies for an energy management system based on hydrogen-priority vs. battery-priority for the operation of a hybrid renewable microgrid. The overall performance of the two mentioned strategies is compared in the long-term operation via a set of evaluation parameters defined by the unmet load, storage efficiency, operating hours and cumulative energy. The results show that the hydrogen-priority strategy allows the microgrid to be led towards island operation because it saves a higher amount of energy, while the battery-priority strategy reduces the energy efficiency in the storage round trip. The main contribution of this work lies in the demonstration that conventional EMS for microgrids’ operation based on battery-priority strategy should turn into hydrogen-priority to keep the reliability and independence of the microgrid in the long-term operation
Stellar over-densities in the halo: the extent of the Virgo over-density
We map the three dimensional extent of the Virgo Over-density by combining
distance information from RR Lyrae variables and projected spatial information
from SEKBO (Keller et al. 2008) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR6
photometry. The Virgo Over-density is seen to comprise two filaments 14.5 x 3
degrees and 10 x 3 degrees and a circular structure 3 degrees in diameter.
Together the three features span 38 degrees of right ascension and declinations
of +2 to -15 degrees. RR Lyrae variables place the two filamentary features at
heliocentric distances of 20 and 17 kpc respectively, with projected dimensions
of 5 x 1 kpc and 3 x 1 kpc.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS accepte
FK506 IN PEDIATRIC KIDNEY-TRANSPLANTATION - PRIMARY AND RESCUE EXPERIENCE
Between December 14, 1989, and December 17, 1993,43 patients undergoing kidney transplantation alone at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh received FK506 as the primary immunosuppressive agent. The mean recipient age was 10.2 ± 4.8 years (range 0.7–17.4), with 7 (16%) children under 5 years of age and 2 (5%) under 2 years of age. Fifteen (35%) children underwent retransplantation, and 5 (12%) had a panel reactive antibody level greater than 40%. Twenty-two (51%) cases were with cadaveric donors, and 21 (49%) were with living donors. The mean follow-up is 25 ± 14 months. There were no deaths. One and three year actuarial graft survival was 98% and 85%. The mean serum creatinine and BUN were 1.2 ± 0.6 mg/dl and 26 ± 11 mg/dl; the calculated creatinine clearance was 75 ± 23 ml/min/1.73 m(2). Twenty-four (62%) patients have been successfully withdrawn from steroids, and 24 (62%) require no anti-hypertensive medication. Improved growth was seen, particularly in pre-adolescent children off steroids. Between July 28, 1990, and December 2, 1993, 24 children were referred for rescue therapy with FK506, 14.6 ± 16.4 months (range 1.1–53.2) after transplantation. Nineteen (79%) were referred because of resistant rejection; 4 (17%) were referred because of proteinuria; 1 (4%) was switched because of steroid-related obesity. There were no deaths. One and two year graft survival was 75% and 68%. Seventeen (71%) patients were successfully rescued, including 1 of 2 patients who arrived on dialysis. Four (24%) of the successfully rescued patients were weaned off steroids. While not without side effects, which include nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, diabetogenicity, and viral complications, FK506 appears to be an effective immunosuppressive agent for both primary and rescue therapy after kidney transplantation. Its steroid-sparing qualities may be of particular importance in the pediatric population
