Gibbs free-energy difference between the glass and crystalline phases of a Ni-Zr alloy

    Get PDF
The heats of eutectic melting and devitrification, and the specific heats of the crystalline, glass, and liquid phases have been measured for a Ni24Zr76 alloy. The data are used to calculate the Gibbs free-energy difference, DeltaGAC, between the real glass and the crystal on an assumption that the liquid-glass transition is second order. The result shows that DeltaGAC continuously increases as the temperature decreases in contrast to the ideal glass case where DeltaGAC is assumed to be independent of temperature

Gibbs free energy difference between the undercooled liquid and the beta-phase of a Ti-Cr alloy

The heat of fusion and the specific heats of the solid and liquid have been experimentally determined for a Ti60Cr40 alloy. The data are used to evaluate the Gibbs free energy difference, DELTA-G, between the liquid and the beta-phase as a function of temperature to verify a reported spontaneous vitrification (SV) of the beta-phase in Ti-Cr alloys. The results show that SV of an undistorted beta-phase in the Ti60Cr40 alloy at 873 K is not feasible because DELTA-G is positive at the temperature. However, DELTA-G may become negative with additional excess free energy to the beta-phase in the form of defects

A new root-knot nematode, parasitizing Robusta coffee in Dak Lak Province, Western Highlands of Vietnam, is described as Meloidogyne moensi n. sp. Morphological and molecular analyses demonstrated that this species differs clearly from other previously described root-knot nematodes. Morphologically, the new species is characterized by a swollen body of females with a small posterior protuberance that elongated from ovoid to saccate; perineal patterns with smooth striae, continuous and low dorsal arch; lateral lines marked as a faint space or linear depression at junction of the dorsal and ventral striate; distinct phasmids; perivulval region free of striae; visible and wide tail terminus surrounding by concentric circles of striae; medial lips of females in dumbbell-shaped and slightly raised above lateral lips; female stylet is normally straight with posteriorly sloping stylet knobs; lip region of second stage juvenile (J2) is not annulated; medial lips and labial disc of J2 formed dumbbell shape; lateral lips are large and triangular; tail of J2 is conoid with rounded unstriated tail tip; distinct phasmids and hyaline; dilated rectum. Meloidogyne moensi n. sp. is most similar to M. africana, M. ottersoni by prominent posterior protuberance. Results of molecular analysis of rDNA sequences including the D2-D3 expansion regions of 28S rDNA, COI, and partial COII/16S rRNA of mitochondrial DNA support for the new species status

Modelling and validation of synthesis of poly lactic acid using an alternative energy source through a continuous reactive extrusion process

PLA is one of the most promising bio-compostable and bio-degradable thermoplastic polymers made from renewable sources. PLA is generally produced by ring opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide using the metallic/bimetallic catalyst (Sn, Zn, and Al) or other organic catalysts in a suitable solvent. In this work, reactive extrusion experiments using stannous octoate Sn(Oct)2 and tri-phenyl phosphine (PPh)3 were considered to perform ROP of lactide. Ultrasound energy source was used for activating and/or boosting the polymerization as an alternative energy (AE) source. Ludovic® software, designed for simulation of the extrusion process, had to be modified in order to simulate the reactive extrusion of lactide and for the application of an AE source in an extruder. A mathematical model for the ROP of lactide reaction was developed to estimate the kinetics of the polymerization process. The isothermal curves generated through this model were then used by Ludovic software to simulate the “reactive” extrusion process of ROP of lactide. Results from the experiments and simulations were compared to validate the simulation methodology. It was observed that the application of an AE source boosts the polymerization of lactide monomers. However, it was also observed that the predicted residence time was shorter than the experimental one. There is potentially a case for reducing the residence time distribution (RTD) in Ludovic® due to the ‘liquid’ monomer flow in the extruder. Although this change in parameters resulted in validation of the simulation, it was concluded that further research is needed to validate this assumption

Chandra Observations of the Three Most Metal-Deficient Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies known in the Local Universe, SBS 0335-052, SBS 0335-052W, and I Zw 18

We present an X-ray study of the three most metal-deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies known in the local Universe, based on deep Chandra observations of SBS 0335-052 (0.025 solar abundance), SBS 0335-052W (0.02 solar abundance) and I Zw 18 (0.02 solar abundance). All three are detected, with more than 90% of their X-ray emission arising from point-like sources. The 0.5-10.0 keV luminosities of these point sources are in the range (1.3-8.5)x1e39 erg/s. We interpret them to be single or a collection of high-mass X-ray binaries, the luminosities of which may have been enhanced by the low metallicity of the gas. There are hints of faint extended diffuse X-ray emission in both SBS 0335-052 and I Zw 18, probably associated with the superbubbles visible in both BCDs. The spectrum of I Zw 18 shows a OVIII hydrogen-like emission line. The best spectral fit gives an O overabundance of the gas in the X-ray point source by a factor of ~7 with respect to the Sun, or a factor of ~350 with respect to the O abundance determined for the HII region.Comment: emulateapj.cls used, 7 pages, 7 figures + 1 table, accepted for publication in Ap

This paper details the design of a closed-loop insulin delivery device, consisting of a glucose sensing circuit, and a basic microprocessor-based syringe pump. The glucose sensing circuit contains the required components to interface with CGMS\u27s glucose sensor assembly, while the syringe pump design uses microprocessor to allow flexible control over the pump driver. Instrumentation developed in this paper provides a ready reference to other researchers on the construction of a closed-loop insulin delivery apparatus with amperometric glucose sensor.<br /

HI Properties of Low Luminosity Star-Forming Galaxies in the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey

    Get PDF
New HI observations are presented for a complete sample of 109 low luminosity star-forming galaxies taken from the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS), the first CCD-based wide-field objective-prism survey for emission-line galaxies. This sample consists of all star-forming galaxies with M_B > -18.0 and cz < 11,000 km/s from the first Halpha-selected survey list. Overall, 97 out of 109 galaxies have been detected in HI. We confirm the weak trend of increasing gas richness with decreasing luminosity found by previous authors. Gas richness is also shown to be weakly anti-correlated with metallicity. The dependence of star formation rates (SFRs) and HI gas depletion timescales on metallicity is examined. The median solar metallicity based SFR and gas depletion timescale are 0.1639 M_sun/yr and 5 Gyrs, respectively. Corrections for variations in metallicity decreases SFRs by about 0.5 dex and increases gas depletion timescales by an average of about 8 Gyrs. The majority of galaxies in this sample still have large reservoirs of HI gas, and despite their large current star formation rates, could have formed stars in a quasi-continuous manner for a Hubble time. Finally, we present the first HI mass function for low luminosity star-forming galaxies and show that this subpopulation contributes 10-15% of the overall HI density in the local universe. We conclude that if the HI mass function of the Universe does indeed have a steeply rising low-mass slope as suggested by previous authors, it is not due to the population of low luminosity star-forming galaxies.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. Nonlinear Modes of Liquid Drops as Solitary Waves

The nolinear hydrodynamic equations of the surface of a liquid drop are shown to be directly connected to Korteweg de Vries (KdV, MKdV) systems, giving traveling solutions that are cnoidal waves. They generate multiscale patterns ranging from small harmonic oscillations (linearized model), to nonlinear oscillations, up through solitary waves. These non-axis-symmetric localized shapes are also described by a KdV Hamiltonian system. Recently such ``rotons'' were observed experimentally when the shape oscillations of a droplet became nonlinear. The results apply to drop-like systems from cluster formation to stellar models, including hyperdeformed nuclei and fission.Comment: 11 pages RevTex, 1 figure p

The Oxygen Abundance of Nearby Galaxies from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Spectra

We have derived the oxygen abundance for a sample of nearby galaxies in the Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) which possess at least two independent spectra of one or several HII regions with a detected [OIII]4363 auroral line. Since, for nearby galaxies, the [OII]3727 nebular line is out of the observed wavelength range, we propose a method to derive (O/H)_ff abundances using the classic Te method coupled with the ff relation. (O/H)_7325 abundances have also been determined, based on the [OII]7320,7330 line intensities, and using a small modification of the standard Te method. The (O/H)_ff and (O/H)_7325 abundances have been derived with both the one- and two-dimensional t_2 - t_3 relations. It was found that the (O/H)_ff abundances derived with the parametric two-dimensional t_2 - t_3 relation are most reliable. Oxygen abundances have been determined in 29 nearby galaxies, based on 84 individual abundance determinations in HII regions. Because of our selection methods, the metallicity of our galaxies lies in the narrow range 8.2 < 12 + log (O/H) < 8.4. The radial distribution of oxygen abundances in the disk of the spiral galaxy NGC 4490 is determined for the first time.Comment: 39 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
