    Parent Beliefs about Technology: A Comparison of Homeschool and Formal Education Families

    The purpose of this study was to gain information about how technology is used by parents to assist school learning as well as their opinions and beliefs about the role of technology in the learning process. Specifically, using homeschool and educational networks as well as social media for distribution of a digital questionnaire, this study sought to gauge parents’ experience with, as well as responses to, attitudes, and values towards the use of technology in homeschool and classroom education. Sixty-five parents of children who are studying at the elementary grade levels participated in this study. Twenty of these were parents of children enrolled in formal education settings, e.g., public/ private schools, and forty-five were parents of children being homeschooled. Demographic information was used to segment the data into homeschool and formal schooling groups. The study found that although homeschooled children do receive more exposure to technology than formal schooled children, homeschooled children are much less likely to be encouraged to use technology than formal schooled children

    Sensor/Actuator Selection for the Constrained Variance Control Problem

    The problem of designing a linear controller for systems subject to inequality variance constraints is considered. A quadratic penalty function approach is used to yield a linear controller. Both the weights in the quadratic penalty function and the locations of sensors and actuators are selected by successive approximations to obtain an optimal design which satisfies the input/output variance constraints. The method is applied to NASA's 64 meter Hoop-Column Space Antenna for satellite communications. In addition the solution for the control law, the main feature of these results is the systematic determination of actuator design requirements which allow the given input/output performance constraints to be satisfied

    Internet Copyright Infringement and Service Providers: The Case for a Negotiated Rulemaking Alternative

    The Internet has dramatically increased the ease of copyright infringement. A popular proposal recommends that Internet service providers (ISP) be held liable for the harms, including copyright infringements, of their users. ISPs reject this approach, warning that it will hamper the expansion of the Internet. This article recommends a regulatory approach to ISP liability for copyright infringement. A technical introduction to the Internet is given, pointing to difficulties that courts have had navigating this conceptually new and complex subject. Arguments in favor or strict liability of ISPs are presented, with an analysis of their likely economic and social consequences. The author concludes with a regulatory solution designed to minimize losses both to service providers and content providers

    Does Weight Status Impact Metabolic Health in Adolescents When Controlling for Physical Fitness?

    Purpose: To determines whether adolescents who are fit with overweight/obesity are similar in their metabolic profile to adolescents who are fit and normal weight. Methods: Adolescents participated in 3 sessions: (1) resting vitals and anthropometrics; (2) maximal aerobic treadmill test () to determine physical fitness; and (3) dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and fasting laboratory draw for analysis of insulin, glucose, high-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein. Results: Of the 30 fit adolescents who are normal weight and 16 adolescents who are fit and overweight/obese (OW/OB), metabolic syndrome was apparent in 1 adolescent who are normal weight and 4 adolescents who are OW/OB. Metabolic syndrome severity was positively associated with body mass index, waist circumference, total body fat, insulin resistance, and C-reactive protein but inversely associated with peak relative, but not lean . Conclusions: Despite good physical fitness, adolescents who are OW/OB demonstrated greater metabolic syndrome than adolescents who are normal weight. Future intervention research is necessary to explore the relation between physical fitness and metabolic syndrome

    Why older adults spend time sedentary and break their sedentary behavior: a mixed methods approach using life-logging equipment

    Older adults are recommended to reduce their sedentary time to promote healthy ageing. To develop effective interventions identifying when, why, and how older adults are able to change their sitting habits is important. The aim of this mixed-method study was to improve our understanding of reasons for (breaking) sedentary behavior in older adults. Thirty older adults (74.0 [+/- 5.3] years old, 73% women) were asked about their believed reasons for (breaking) sedentary behavior, and about their actual reasons when looking at a personal storyboard with objective records of activPAL monitor data and time-lapse camera pictures showing all their periods of sedentary time in a day. The most often mentioned believed reason for remaining sedentary was television/radio (mentioned by 48.3%), while eating/drinking was most often mentioned as actual reason (96.6%). Only 17.2% believed that food/tea preparation was a reason to break up sitting, while this was an actual reason for 82.8% of the study sample. Results of this study show that there is a discrepancy between believed and actual reasons for (breaking) sedentary behavior. These findings suggest developing interventions utilizing the actual reasons for breaking sedentary behavior to reduce sedentary time in older adults

    Development and implementation of electronic medical handovers across psychiatric hospitals: quality improvement initiative

    A lack of integration between internal processes and failure to use the full potential of information technology (IT) systems is common in psychiatric hospitals. We aimed to reduce the number of out-of-hours medical errors by ensuring that there is consistent and transparent weekend medical handover by creating an electronic handover system that is easy to use, robust and embedded into the existing trust IT systems. We employed quality improvement (QI) methodology to address this issue. After trialling in a single site followed by six cycles of improvement, the weekend medical handover system is now in use across four boroughs and has been integrated into trust policy. It has received qualitative and quantitative evidence of improvement, with 100% of doctors reporting the system improved patient care and a 64% (from 11 to 4 events/year) reduction in moderate, severe and catastrophic adverse incidents occurring out-of-hours within the older adult service (p=0.29, χ2 1.117). The increasing number of complex patients with comorbid medical illness in psychiatric inpatient services demands robust handover systems similar to that of an acute trust. This QI work offers a template for achieving this across other psychiatric trusts and demonstrates the positive change that can be achieved

    The appeal of the Functional Fitness MOT to older adults and health professionals in an outpatient setting: a mixed-method feasibility study

    Purpose: To understand the views and perceptions regarding the Functional Fitness MOT (FFMOT), a battery of functional tests followed by a brief motivational interview, of both the older people undergoing it and the health professionals delivering it. Patients and methods: Physically inactive older adults (n=29) underwent the FFMOT and subsequently attended focus groups to share their perceptions of it and to discuss the barriers, motivators, health behavior change, and scope to improve physical activity (PA) levels. PA levels were recorded at baseline and again at 12 weeks together with a post-intervention questionnaire concerning behavior change. Participating physiotherapists and technical instructors were interviewed. Results: Most participants felt they had learned about their abilities and comparisons with their peers, had a change in perception about the importance of good balance and strength, and felt the FFMOT helped raise their awareness of local and self-directed physical activity opportunities. Most felt their awareness of the need for PA had not changed, but 25% of participants started a new organized PA opportunity. The health professionals perceived the FFMOT as being easy to administer, educating, and motivating for participants to increase their PA. Space, time, finances, and insecurity about having the necessary skills to conduct the FFMOTs were seen as barriers in implementing the FFMOT in daily practice. Conclusion: Over half of those offered the FFMOT accepted it, suggesting it is appealing. However, most participants felt they were already active enough and that their awareness of the need for PA had not changed. There were positive perceptions of the FFMOT from both professionals and older people, but both felt the FFMOT could be held in a community venue. The overall findings suggest that the FFMOT is feasible in the clinical setting, but its effectiveness has yet to be determined

    A study of design change management for infrastructure development projects in New Zealand

    Design changes seem to be an inevitable part of engineering, procurement and construction EPC projects. Such changes create a need for a proactive approach to adjusting project scope, cost and time (the triple constraints) for efficiency and effectiveness in overall delivery. This study investigates the causes and implications of design changes in order to improve design change management practices. Data for the study were obtained through online interviews with New Zealand industry practitioners. Thematic analysis was used to collate the results into meaningful data. The study found that design changes were predominantly caused by clients’ inadequate strategic planning, insufficient attention to design, EPC contractors’ inadequate design ability, and on-site variations. There were three categories of such design changes: direct impact on the project, the reciprocal and complementary effect on stakeholders, and the far-reaching impact on the community. The study concludes by suggesting improvements, such as strengthening the integration of project teams to enhance design quality, strategic alignment of stakeholders at the planning stage, early contractor involvement (ECI) between the planning and design phases, and improving collaboration between design and construction teams. Further, a combination of high technical skills (e.g., design ability) and soft skills (can-do attitude, interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, documentation skills, etc.) are needed to generate the desired improvement in design change management.fals
