Mathematical modelling in the analysis and design of hard and soft measurement systems
This paper briefly looks into the role and extent of mathematical modelling in the design and analysis of measurement systems, especially measurement sub-systems in the form of instruments and instrument elements. These fall within the classical domain of hard measurement (physical, strongly-defined measurement). It also examines the role and use of mathematical modelling in the area of soft measurement (non-physical, weakly defined measurement). These constitute two sub-sets of widely-defined measurement. Based on a number of examples it demonstrates the use of modern modelling techniques in the design and analysis of sub-systems in measurement technology. In doing so, it focuses on the scope and importance of physical modelling at a sub-system level, which ultimately contributes to modelling activities at a global systems level
Universal Description of Granular Metals at Low Temperatures: Granular Fermi Liquid
We present a unified description of the low temperature phase of granular
metals that reveals a striking generality of the low temperature behaviors. Our
model explains the universality of the low-temperature conductivity that
coincides exactly with that of the homogeneously disordered systems and enables
a straightforward derivation of low temperature characteristics of disordered
conductors.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
A Selective Macro-learning Algorithm and its Application to the NxN Sliding-Tile Puzzle
One of the most common mechanisms used for speeding up problem solvers is
macro-learning. Macros are sequences of basic operators acquired during problem
solving. Macros are used by the problem solver as if they were basic operators.
The major problem that macro-learning presents is the vast number of macros
that are available for acquisition. Macros increase the branching factor of the
search space and can severely degrade problem-solving efficiency. To make macro
learning useful, a program must be selective in acquiring and utilizing macros.
This paper describes a general method for selective acquisition of macros.
Solvable training problems are generated in increasing order of difficulty. The
only macros acquired are those that take the problem solver out of a local
minimum to a better state. The utility of the method is demonstrated in several
domains, including the domain of NxN sliding-tile puzzles. After learning on
small puzzles, the system is able to efficiently solve puzzles of any size.Comment: See http://www.jair.org/ for an online appendix and other files

Representations of U(1,q) and Constructive Quaternion Tensor Products
The representation theory of the group U(1,q) is discussed in detail because
of its possible application in a quaternion version of the Salam-Weinberg
theory.
As a consequence, from purely group theoretical arguments we demonstrate that
the eigenvalues must be right-eigenvalues and that the only consistent scalar
products are the complex ones. We also define an explicit quaternion tensor
product which leads to a set of additional group representations for integer
``spin''.Comment: 28 pages, Latex, Dipartimento di Fisica, Universita di Lecce

General solution of equations of motion for a classical particle in 9-dimensional Finslerian space
A Lagrangian description of a classical particle in a 9-dimensional flat
Finslerian space with a cubic metric function is constructed. The general
solution of equations of motion for such a particle is obtained. The Galilean
law of inertia for the Finslerian space is confirmed.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX-2e, no figures; added 2 reference
Compressing Word Embeddings
Recent methods for learning vector space representations of words have
succeeded in capturing fine-grained semantic and syntactic regularities using
vector arithmetic. However, these vector space representations (created through
large-scale text analysis) are typically stored verbatim, since their internal
structure is opaque. Using word-analogy tests to monitor the level of detail
stored in compressed re-representations of the same vector space, the
trade-offs between the reduction in memory usage and expressiveness are
investigated. A simple scheme is outlined that can reduce the memory footprint
of a state-of-the-art embedding by a factor of 10, with only minimal impact on
performance. Then, using the same `bit budget', a binary (approximate)
factorisation of the same space is also explored, with the aim of creating an
equivalent representation with better interpretability.Comment: 10 pages, 0 figures, submitted to ICONIP-2016. Previous experimental

Aligning flexibility with uncertainty in software development arrangements through a contractual typology
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to identify a typology of procurement contracts in the context of software development projects that allows firms to align design flexibility with design uncertainty at the project level. The theoretical lenses of contract theory and software engineering are used to explain why the five archetypes in the proposed typology provide gradually increasing levels of design flexibility and to develop hypotheses about the associations between design flexibility and a set of project cost dimensions.
Design/methodology/approach
The hypotheses are tested with objective contractual data from 270 software development contracts entered into by a leading international bank over a period of three years.
Findings
Data analysis confirms the existence of the proposed typology and shows that design flexibility is negatively associated with control and positively associated with coordination, trust, duration and price.
Research limitations/implications
Although the findings are based on the contracting practices of a single, albeit sophisticated, organization, they shed light on the ability of firms to align flexibility with uncertainty at the onset of new projects by taking advantage of nuanced contractual mechanisms to produce a broader set of contractual archetypes.
Originality/value
This paper is the first in the outsourcing literature to analyze a nuanced contractual typology in software development projects through the perspectives of both contract theory and software engineering
Critical behavior of density of states near Fermi energy in low-dimensional disordered metals
We study the effect of electron-electron interaction on the one-particle
density of states (\emph{DOS}) of low-dimensional
disordered metals near Fermi energy within the framework of the finite
temperature conventional impurity diagram technique. We consider only diffusive
limit and by a geometric re-summation of the most singular first order
self-energy corrections via the Dyson equation we obtain a non-divergent
solution for the \emph{DOS} at low energies, while for higher energies the
well-known Altshuler-Aronov corrections are recovered. At the Fermi level
, this indicates that interacting disordered
two- and quasi-one-dimensional systems are in insulating state at zero
temperature. The obtained results are in good agreement with recent tunneling
experiments on two-dimensional GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures and
quasi-one-dimensional doped multiwall carbon nanotubes.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Suppression of superconductivity in granular metals
We investigate the suppression of the superconducting transition temperature
due to Coulomb repulsion in granular metallic systems at large tunneling
conductance between the grains, . We find the correction to the
superconducting transition temperature for 3 granular samples and films. We
demonstrate that depending on the parameters of superconducting grains, the
corresponding granular samples can be divided into two groups: (i) the granular
samples that belong to the first group may have only insulating or
superconducting states at zero temperature depending on the bare intergranular
tunneling conductance , while (ii) the granular samples that belong to the
second group in addition have an intermediate metallic phase where
superconductivity is suppressed while the effects of the Coulomb blockade are
not yet strong.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
