Lyapunov-type Inequalities for Partial Differential Equations

In this work we present a Lyapunov inequality for linear and quasilinear elliptic differential operators in NN-dimensional domains Ω\Omega. We also consider singular and degenerate elliptic problems with ApA_p coefficients involving the pp-Laplace operator with zero Dirichlet boundary condition. As an application of the inequalities obtained, we derive lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of the pp-Laplacian, and compare them with the usual ones in the literature

Eigenvalues of the p-Laplacian and disconjugacy criteria

We derive oscillation and nonoscillation criteria for the one-dimensional p-Laplacian in terms of an eigenvalue inequality for a mixed problem. We generalize the results obtained in the linear case by Nehari and Willett, and the proof is based on a Picone-type identity

Corrosion Resistance of Cr (III) Based Conversion Layer on Zinc Coatings in Comparison with a Traditional Cr (VI) Based Passivation Treatment

Industrial hot dip galvanized steels were submitted to a Cr(III)-based passivation treatment(containing phosphates) leading to Cr(VI)-free conversion layers. The characterization of the substrate and of the coatings was carried out before and after the passivationtreatment by means of optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy with energy X-raydispersive spectrometry associated (SEM/EDS). In particular the zinc coating was preliminarily studiedboth superficially and in section in order to define its adequacy and its possible state of defectiveness. The corrosion behaviour was evaluated by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)and salt spray test. A comparison between the protective effectiveness of the innovative Cr(III)-basedpassivation and the Cr(VI)-based process usually employed by manufacturers was carried out.According to the exposed preliminary results, promising outcomes were obtained with the innovativeCr(III)-based passivation by optimizing the amount of chromium in the coating

Hierarchy of Scales in Language Dynamics

    Get PDF
Methods and insights from statistical physics are finding an increasing variety of applications where one seeks to understand the emergent properties of a complex interacting system. One such area concerns the dynamics of language at a variety of levels of description, from the behaviour of individual agents learning simple artificial languages from each other, up to changes in the structure of languages shared by large groups of speakers over historical timescales. In this Colloquium, we survey a hierarchy of scales at which language and linguistic behaviour can be described, along with the main progress in understanding that has been made at each of them − much of which has come from the statistical physics community. We argue that future developments may arise by linking the different levels of the hierarchy together in a more coherent fashion, in particular where this allows more effective use of rich empirical data sets

Including art into the elementary curriculum to help engage children in their own learning

The purpose of this capstone project was to prove that including art into the elementary curriculum can help engage children in their own learning. Art education is important for student’s development and schools are slowing decreasing the amount of art provided in classrooms. Interviews were conducted with teachers at an elementary school regarding questions that pertained to the importance of art in the classrooms and how it benefits students. Responses indicated that the state standard guidelines limited the amount of time in the classrooms for art. To support the importance of art in the curriculum, the researcher created lesson plans incorporating art based learning with other core subjects. By showing teachers how to create lesson plans combining art and other core subject’s, students can continue to receive the benefits of art based learning every day
