    Statistical Analysis of Airport Network of China

    Through the study of airport network of China (ANC), composed of 128 airports (nodes) and 1165 flights (edges), we show the topological structure of ANC conveys two characteristics of small worlds, a short average path length (2.067) and a high degree of clustering (0.733). The cumulative degree distributions of both directed and undirected ANC obey two-regime power laws with different exponents, i.e., the so-called Double Pareto Law. In-degrees and out-degrees of each airport have positive correlations, whereas the undirected degrees of adjacent airports have significant linear anticorrelations. It is demonstrated both weekly and daily cumulative distributions of flight weights (frequencies) of ANC have power-law tails. Besides, the weight of any given flight is proportional to the degrees of both airports at the two ends of that flight. It is also shown the diameter of each sub-cluster (consisting of an airport and all those airports to which it is linked) is inversely proportional to its density of connectivity. Efficiency of ANC and of its sub-clusters are measured through a simple definition. In terms of that, the efficiency of ANC's sub-clusters increases as the density of connectivity does.     Analysis of aggregated tick returns: evidence for anomalous diffusion

    In order to investigate the origin of large price fluctuations, we analyze stock price changes of ten frequently traded NASDAQ stocks in the year 2002. Though the influence of the trading frequency on the aggregate return in a certain time interval is important, it cannot alone explain the heavy tailed distribution of stock price changes. For this reason, we analyze intervals with a fixed number of trades in order to eliminate the influence of the trading frequency and investigate the relevance of other factors for the aggregate return. We show that in tick time the price follows a discrete diffusion process with a variable step width while the difference between the number of steps in positive and negative direction in an interval is Gaussian distributed. The step width is given by the return due to a single trade and is long-term correlated in tick time. Hence, its mean value can well characterize an interval of many trades and turns out to be an important determinant for large aggregate returns. We also present a statistical model reproducing the cumulative distribution of aggregate returns. For an accurate agreement with the empirical distribution, we also take into account asymmetries of the step widths in different directions together with crosscorrelations between these asymmetries and the mean step width as well as the signs of the steps.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, typos correcte

    Zipf law in the popularity distribution of chess openings

    We perform a quantitative analysis of extensive chess databases and show that the frequencies of opening moves are distributed according to a power-law with an exponent that increases linearly with the game depth, whereas the pooled distribution of all opening weights follows Zipf's law with universal exponent. We propose a simple stochastic process that is able to capture the observed playing statistics and show that the Zipf law arises from the self-similar nature of the game tree of chess. Thus, in the case of hierarchical fragmentation the scaling is truly universal and independent of a particular generating mechanism.     On the Truncated Pareto Distribution with applications

    The Pareto probability distribution is widely applied in different fields such us finance, physics, hydrology, geology and astronomy. This note deals with an application of the Pareto distribution to astrophysics and more precisely to the statistical analysis of mass of stars and of diameters of asteroids. In particular a comparison between the usual Pareto distribution and its truncated version is presented. Finally a possible physical mechanism that produces Pareto tails for the distribution of the masses of stars is suggested.Comment: 10 pages 6 figure

    Emergence of skew distributions in controlled growth processes

    Starting from a master equation, we derive the evolution equation for the size distribution of elements in an evolving system, where each element can grow, divide into two, and produce new elements. We then probe general solutions of the evolution quation, to obtain such skew distributions as power-law, log-normal, and Weibull distributions, depending on the growth or division and production. Specifically, repeated production of elements of uniform size leads to power-law distributions, whereas production of elements with the size distributed according to the current distribution as well as no production of new elements results in log-normal distributions. Finally, division into two, or binary fission, bears Weibull distributions. Numerical simulations are also carried out, confirming the validity of the obtained solutions.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    Albumin; Intravenous immunoglobulin; PlasmapheresisAlbúmina; Inmunoglobulina intravenosa; PlasmaféresisAlbúmina; Immunoglobulina intravenosa; PlasmafèresiPurpose This study was designed to detect structural and functional brain changes in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients treated with therapeutic plasma exchange (PE) with albumin replacement, as part of the recent AMBAR phase 2b/3 clinical trial. Methods Mild-to-moderate AD patients were randomized into four arms: three arms receiving PE with albumin (one with low-dose albumin, and two with low/high doses of albumin alternated with IVIG), and a placebo (sham PE) arm. All arms underwent 6 weeks of weekly conventional PE followed by 12 months of monthly low-volume PE. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) volumetric analyses and regional and statistical parametric mapping (SPM) analysis on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18FDG-PET) were performed. Results MRI analyses (n = 198 patients) of selected subcortical structures showed fewer volume changes from baseline to final visit in the high albumin + IVIG treatment group (p < 0.05 in 3 structures vs. 4 to 9 in other groups). The high albumin + IVIG group showed no statistically significant reduction of right hippocampus. SPM 18FDG-PET analyses (n = 213 patients) showed a worsening of metabolic activity in the specific areas affected in AD (posterior cingulate, precuneus, and parieto-temporal regions). The high-albumin + IVIG treatment group showed the greatest metabolic stability over the course of the study, i.e., the smallest percent decline in metabolism (MaskAD), and least progression of defect compared to placebo. Conclusions PE with albumin replacement was associated with fewer deleterious changes in subcortical structures and less metabolic decline compared to the typical of the progression of AD. This effect was more marked in the group treated with high albumin + IVIG.The AMBAR study is sponsored by Grifols, a manufacturer of therapeutic human serum albumin and intravenous immune globulin.     Power Law Scaling for a System of Interacting Units with Complex Internal Structure

    We study the dynamics of a system composed of interacting units each with a complex internal structure comprising many subunits. We consider the case in which each subunit grows in a multiplicative manner. We propose a model for such systems in which the interaction among the units is treated in a mean field approximation and the interaction among subunits is nonlinear.
