    EMDR Treatment in People with Mild ID and PTSD: 4 Cases

    Although there is evidence to suggest that people with intellectual disabilities (ID) are likely to be more susceptible to the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than persons in the general population, until now only eight case reports on the treatment of people with ID suffering from PTSD symptoms have been published. In an effort to enrich the literature on this subject, the aim was to investigate the applicability of an evidence-based treatment for PTSD (i.e., EMDR) in four people with mild ID, suffering from PTSD following various kinds of trauma. In all cases PTSD symptoms decreased and the gains were maintained at 3 months to 2.5 year follow-up. In addition, depressive symptoms and physical complaints subsided, and social and adaptive skills improved. It is concluded that clients′ improvements converge to suggest the applicability of EMDR in people with mild ID. Difficulties involved in arriving at an accurate PTSD diagnosis in ID clients are discussed

    Feasibility and potential effectiveness of an intensive trauma-focused treatment programme for families with PTSD and mild intellectual disability

    Background: Persons with mild intellectual disabilities or borderline intellectual functioning (MID-BIF; IQ 50–85) have a higher risk of being exposed to traumatic events and developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR therapy has shown to be applicable, safe and potentially effective for the treatment of PTSD in individuals with MID-BIF. However, in traumatized multi-problem families with MID-BIF and (impending) out of home placement of children, standard PTSD treatment in an outpatient setting may not be appropriate. Objective: To evaluate the feasibility and potential effectiveness of KINGS-ID, a six-week clinical trauma-focused treatment programme consisting of intensive EMDR therapy with parents and children, and parental skills training followed by two weeks of parent support at home. Method: Six families (nine parents of whom six had MID-BIF) and 10 children (all having MID-BIF) participated in the KINGS-ID programme. Seven parents and seven children had PTSD. Data were collected within a single case study design. For each family member data were collected during baseline (three measurements), treatment (seven weekly measurements), posttreatment (three measurements) and at follow-up (three measurements). Results: None of the family members dropped out. Within the first two treatment weeks all but one child and one parent no longer met PTSD symptom criteria. In both children and parents, trauma-related symptoms and daily life impairment significantly decreased following treatment and in parents a significant decrease in symptoms of general psychopathology and parental stress was found. Results were maintained at six-month follow-up. Conclusions: The findings of the current study are promising given that the treatment programme seems to offer new perspectives for traumatized multi-problem families with MID-BIF

    Pumpkin seeds, lemongrass essential oil and ripleaf leaves as feed additives for Ascaridia galli infected laying hens.

    The present study was performed to evaluate the in vivo efficiency of Curcurbita pepo (pumpkin) seeds, Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) essential oil and Plantago lanceolata (ripleaf) leaves against helminth infections in laying hens. In the first experiment, 75 Lohmann LSL Classic hens naturally infected with Ascaridia galli were assigned to groups of five; groups were randomly assigned to one of three treatments with five replicates each (untreated control; lemongrass oil: 1 g/bird/day; pumpkin seeds: 10 g/bird/day). Feed consumption and egg production were continuously recorded, individual faecal egg counts were determined weekly, and E. coli and Lactobacillus spp. three times during the experimental period of 29 days. After slaughter, intestinal worms were counted and sexed. Pumpkin improved feed conversion as compared to the control (p = 0.008) and to lemongrass (p = 0.021); no treatment effect on any other parameter was found. In the second experiment, 75 LSL pullets were artificially infected with 3 × 200 A. galli eggs, randomly divided into groups of five and assigned to one of three treatments (untreated control, lemongrass oil: 1 g/bird/day; ripleaf: 5% of ration). After 109 days of sampling as described above, hens were slaughtered and worm burdens determined. Performance of the animals did not change regardless of the treatment and none of the treatments resulted in changes of the microbiological and parasitological parameters. In conclusion, with the exception of improved feed conversion in the pumpkin group, no positive nor negative effects of the additives on performance, parasitological and microbiological parameters of naturally and artificially A. galli infected laying hens were observed

    Screening of DUB activity and specificity by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry

    Deubiquitylases (DUBs) are key regulators of the ubiquitin system which cleave ubiquitin moieties from proteins and polyubiquitin chains. Several DUBs have been implicated in various diseases and are attractive drug targets. We have developed a sensitive and fast assay to quantify in vitro DUB enzyme activity using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. Unlike other current assays, this method uses unmodified substrates, such as diubiquitin topoisomers. By analyzing 42 human DUBs against all diubiquitin topoisomers we provide an extensive characterization of DUB activity and specificity. Our results confirm the high specificity of many members of the OTU and JAMM DUB families and highlight that all USPs tested display low linkage selectivity. We also demonstrate that this assay can be deployed to assess the potency and specificity of DUB inhibitors by profiling 11 compounds against a panel of 32 DUBs

    Measurement of the Inclusive Semi-electronic D0D^0 Branching Fraction

    Using the angular correlation between the π+\pi^+ emitted in a D+D0π+D^{*+} \rightarrow D^0 \pi^+ decay and the e+e^+ emitted in the subsequent D0Xe+νD^0 \rightarrow Xe^+\nu decay, we have measured the branching fraction for the inclusive semi-electronic decay of the D0D^0 meson to be: {\cal B}(D^0 \rightarrow X e^+ \nu) = [6.64 \pm 0.18 (stat.) \pm 0.29 (syst.)] \%. The result is based on 1.7 fb1^{-1} of e+ee^+e^- collisions recorded by the CLEO II detector located at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). Combining the analysis presented in this paper with previous CLEO results we find, \frac{{\cal B} (D^0 \rightarrow X e^+ \nu)} {{\cal B} (D^0 \rightarrow K^- \pi^+)} = 1.684 \pm 0.056 (stat.) \pm 0.093(syst.) and \frac{{\cal B}(D\rightarrow K^-e^+\nu)} {{\cal B}(D\rightarrow Xe^+\nu)} = 0.581 \pm 0.023 (stat.) \pm 0.028(syst.). The difference between the inclusive rate and the sum of the measured exclusive branching fractions (measured at CLEO and other experiments) is (3.3±7.2)%(3.3 \pm 7.2) \% of the inclusive rate.Comment: Latex file, 33pages, 4 figures Submitted to PR

    Search for Exclusive Charmless Hadronic B Decays

    We have searched for two-body charmless hadronic decays of BB mesons. Final states include ππ\pi\pi, KπK \pi, and KKKK with both charged and neutral kaons and pions; πρ\pi\rho, KρK \rho, and KπK^*\pi; and KϕK\phi, Kϕ K^*\phi, and ϕϕ\phi\phi. The data used in this analysis consist of 2.6~million BBˉB\bar{B}~pairs produced at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) taken with the CLEO-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). We measure the branching fraction of the sum of B0π+πB^0 \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^- and B0K+πB^0 \rightarrow K^+\pi^- to be (1.80.50.3+0.6+0.2±0.2)×105(1.8^{+0.6+0.2}_{-0.5-0.3}\pm0.2) \times 10^{-5}.
