Differentiating normal and problem gambling: a grounded theory approach.

Get PDF
A previous study (Ricketts & Macaskill, 2003) delineated a theory of problem gambling based on the experiences of treatment seeking male gamblers and allowed predictions to be made regarding the processes that differentiate between normal and problem gamblers. These predictions are the focus of the present study, which also utilised a grounded theory approach, but with a sample of male high frequency normal gamblers. The findings suggest that there are common aspects of gambling associated with arousal and a sense of achievement. The use of gambling to manage negative emotional states differentiated normal and problem gambling. Perceived self-efficacy , emotion management skills and perceived likelihood of winning money back were intervening variables differentiating problem and normal gamblers.</p

Organometallic nucleoside analogues: effect of hydroxyalkyl linker length on cancer cell line toxicity

Get PDF
A new series of chiral ferrocene derivatives containing both a hydroxyalkyl group and a thyminyl group on one cyclopentadienyl ring have been synthesised to probe structure–activity relationships in cancer cell line cytotoxicities. The stereoisomers of enantiomeric pairs of these so-called ferronucleosides have been studied and characterised by a combination of chiral analytical HPLC and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Biological activity studies revealed that changing the length of the hydroxyalkyl group had marked effects on IC50 values, with compounds having shorter arms that more closely resemble endogenous nucleosides exhibiting lower cytotoxicities. The lipophilicities and electrochemical properties of this compound series have been studied to rationalise these trends and indicate future directions of study

The political process of constructing a sustainable London Olympics sports development legacy

Get PDF
This study attempts to develop a research agenda for understanding the process of constructing a sustainable Olympic sports development legacy. The research uses a social constructivist perspective to examine the link between the 2012 London Olympic Games and sustainable sports development. The first part of the paper provides justification for the study of sport policy processes using a constructivist lens. This is followed by a section which critically unpacks sustainable sports development drawing on Mosse’s (1998) ideas of process-oriented research and Searle’s conceptualisation of the construction of social reality. Searle’s (1995) concepts of the assignment of function, collective intentionality, collective rules, and human capacity to cope with the environment are considered in relation to the events and discourses emerging from the legacy vision(s) associated with the 2012 London Olympic Games. The paper concludes by proposing a framework for engaging in process oriented research and highlights key elements, research questions, and methodological issues. The proposed constructivist approach can be used to inform policy, practice, and research on sustainable Olympic sports development legacy

Regulatory axes on food advertising to children on television

Get PDF
This article describes and evaluates some of the criteria on the basis of which food advertising to children on television could be regulated, including controls that revolve around the type of television programme, the type of product, the target audience and the time of day. Each of these criteria potentially functions as a conceptual device or "axis" around which regulation rotates. The article considers examples from a variety of jurisdictions around the world, including Sweden and Quebec. The article argues that restrictions centring on the time of day when a substantial proportion of children are expected to be watching television are likely to be the easiest for consumers to understand, and the most effective in limiting children's exposure to advertising
