Vapor Sensing Characteristics of Nanoelectromechanical Chemical Sensors Functionalized Using Surface-Initiated Polymerization
Surface-initiated polymerization has been used to grow thick, uniform poly(methyl methacrylate) films on nanocantilever sensors. Cantilevers with these coatings yielded significantly greater sensitivity relative to bare devices as well as relative to devices that had been coated with drop-cast polymer films. The devices with surface-initiated polymer films also demonstrated high selectivity toward polar analytes. Surface-initiated polymerization can therefore provide a straightforward, reproducible method for large-scale functionalization of nanosensors
Nanoelectromechanical Resonator Arrays for Ultrafast, Gas-Phase Chromatographic Chemical Analysis
Miniaturized gas chromatography (GC) systems can provide fast, quantitative analysis of chemical vapors in an ultrasmall package. We describe a chemical sensor technology based on resonant nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) mass detectors that provides the speed, sensitivity, specificity, and size required by the microscale GC paradigm. Such NEMS sensors have demonstrated detection of subparts per billion (ppb) concentrations of a phosphonate analyte. By combining two channels of NEMS detection with an ultrafast GC front-end, chromatographic analysis of 13 chemicals was performed within a 5 s time window

In fattened steers of Holstein breed correlation coefficients between factors of the carcass, and between roast grade and size of selected body parts were studied. Study of correlation between roast grade and levels of serumal components of blood taken at slaughter was carried out in the steer above mentioned. Roast grade had minus significant correlation to fat cover depth and daily gain, and plus significant correlation to hips width and thurls width. Correlations between roast grade and concentration of blood serum magnesium or cholesterol were shown, but not significant. There were significant minus correlations between roast grade and concentrations of TP, Al, Gl, Ca, Ca/Mg in the serum. Ratio of Mg/ (Ca+P+Mg) had a significant positive correlation to roast grade. When grouped by sire, steers group with low daily gain had generally a high quality of roast
AAC Penhold Canada Prairie Spring Red Wheat
AAC Penhold, an awned hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar, yielded significantly more grain than 5700PR while maturing 2 days earlier, and 7.5 cm shorter stature. The seed size was significantly larger than 5700PR and 5701PR, with a test weight significantly heavier than both checks. AAC Penhold expressed resistance to prevalent races of leaf rust and common bunt, and moderate resistance to fusarium head blight and stem rust. AAC Penhold had higher grain and flour protein than the checks and improved Hagberg Falling Number, amylograph viscosity, and water absorption. AAC Penhold is eligible for grades of the market class, Canada Prairie Spring Red wheat

Mitochondrial ROS prime the hyperglycemic shift from apoptosis to necroptosis.
We have previously identified a shift from TNF-α-induced apoptosis to necroptosis that occurs under hyperglycemic conditions. This shift involves the downregulation or silencing of caspases and concurrent upregulation of necroptotic proteins leading to activation of the necrosome. In addition, under hyperglycemic conditions in vivo, this shift in cell death mechanisms exacerbates neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) brain injury. Here, we identify two major factors that drive the hyperglycemic shift to necroptosis: (1) reactive oxygen species (ROS) and (2) receptor-interacting protein kinase 1 (RIP1). ROS, including mitochondrial superoxide, led to the oxidation of RIP1, as well as formation and activation of the necrosome. Concurrently, ROS mediate a decrease in the levels and activation of executioner caspases-3, -6, and -7. Importantly, hyperglycemia and mitochondrial ROS result in the oxidation of RIP1 and loss of executioner caspases prior to death receptor engagement by TNF-α. Moreover, RIP1 partially controlled levels of mitochondrial ROS in the context of hyperglycemia. As a result of its regulation of ROS, RIP1 also regulated necrosome activation and caspase loss. Mitochondrial ROS exacerbated neonatal HI-brain injury in hyperglycemic mice, as a result of the shift from apoptosis to necroptosis

Modelling the Dynamics of an Aedes albopictus Population
We present a methodology for modelling population dynamics with formal means
of computer science. This allows unambiguous description of systems and
application of analysis tools such as simulators and model checkers. In
particular, the dynamics of a population of Aedes albopictus (a species of
mosquito) and its modelling with the Stochastic Calculus of Looping Sequences
(Stochastic CLS) are considered. The use of Stochastic CLS to model population
dynamics requires an extension which allows environmental events (such as
changes in the temperature and rainfalls) to be taken into account. A simulator
for the constructed model is developed via translation into the specification
language Maude, and used to compare the dynamics obtained from the model with
