Fine structure of alpha decay in odd nuclei
Using an alpha decay level scheme, an explanation for the fine structure in
odd nuclei is evidenced by taking into account the radial and rotational
couplings between the unpaired nucleon and the core of the decaying system. It
is stated that the experimental behavior of the alpha decay fine structure
phenomenon is directed by the dynamical characteristics of the system.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, REVTex, submitted to Physical Review
Garlic (Allium spp.) viruses: detection, distribution and remediation attempts in a European garlic collection
Garlic is an important vegetable crop in numerous countries used as food and natural based medicine. Similar to the majority of vegetatively propagated plants, garlic may be affected by several viruses that can cause severe crop losses. The present study aimed to screen 105 garlic accessions (mother plants) from 5 European countries (Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, and France) for possible presence of Onion yellow dwarf virus (OYDV), Leek yellow stripe virus (LYSV), Garlic common latent virus (GCLV) and Shallot latent virus (SLV). The occurrence of three Allexiviruses (GarV-A, GarV-B and GarV-C) in mixed assays was also investigated. Meristem-tip culture assays were performed in order to attempt eradication of the studied viruses. Garlic viruses identification was made by ELISA and RT-PCR. ELISA outcomes showed that all 105 garlic accessions were infected by different virus combinations. The OYDV and LYSV were identified, by ELISA, in all countries at 96% and 88,6% respectively and by RT-PCR at 99% and 96%. Furthermore, GCLV and SLV were detected by ELISA in about 88% and by RT-PCR at 89% and 90%, respectively with the exception of the studied Allexiviruses which were not amplified by RT-PCR with ALLEX1/ALLEX2 primers. Smaller meristem size (0,3-1,5 mm) led to better virus elimination efficiency (29%) compared to 8% obtained for the larger size (2-2,5 mm). The outcomes were opposite (16% vs. 90%) for plants regeneration. Virus elimination efficiency was linked to the virus type, e.g., OYDV and LYSV were eradicated at 90% while GCLV and Allexiviruses were difficult to eliminate (57,4% and 55,6% of eradication). Given the economic relevance of garlic crops worldwide and the frequently reported incidence of viral infections, it is important to make virusfree germplasm available. Therefore, investigating the garlic germplasm sanitary status and constantly improving it is of crucial importance aiming to increase the overall garlic production
Review of SIS Experimental Results on Strangeness
>A review of meson emission in heavy ion collisions at incident energies
around 1 -- 2 GeV is presented. It is shown how the shape of the
spectra and the various particle yields vary with system size, with centrality
and with incident energy. A statistical model assuming thermal and chemical
equilibrium and exact strangeness conservation (i.e. strangeness conservation
per collision) explains most of the observed features.
Emphasis is put onto the study of and emission. In the framework
of this statistical model it is shown that the experimentally observed equality
of and rates at threshold corrected energies is due to a crossing of two excitation functions. Furthermore,
the independence of the to ratio on the number of participating
nucleons observed between 1 and 10 GeV is consistent with this model.
The observed flow effects are beyond the scope of this model.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, Strangeness 2000, V International Conference on

Production of Charged Pions, Kaons and Antikaons in Relativistic C+C and C+Au Collisions
Production cross sections of charged pions, kaons and antikaons have been
measured in C+C and C+Au collisions at beam energies of 1.0 and 1.8 AGeV for
different polar emission angles. The kaon and antikaon energy spectra can be
described by Boltzmann distributions whereas the pion spectra exhibit an
additional enhancement at low energies. The pion multiplicity per participating
nucleon M(pi+)/A_part is a factor of about 3 smaller in C+Au than in C+C
collisions at 1.0 AGeV whereas it differs only little for the C and the Au
target at a beam energy of 1.8 AGeV. The K+ multiplicities per participating
nucleon M(K+)/A_part are independent of the target size at 1 AGeV and at 1.8
AGeV. The K- multiplicity per participating nucleon M(K-)/A_part is reduced by
a factor of about 2 in C+Au as compared to C+C collisions at 1.8 AGeV. This
effect might be caused by the absorption of antikaons in the heavy target
nucleus. Transport model calculations underestimate the K-/K+ ratio for C+C
collisions at 1.8 AGeV by a factor of about 4 if in-medium modifications of K
mesons are neglected.Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Eur. Phys. J.
Evidence for a Soft Nuclear Equation-of-State from Kaon Production in Heavy Ion Collisions
The production of pions and kaons has been measured in Au+Au collisions at
beam energies from 0.6 to 1.5 AGeV with the Kaon Spectrometer at SIS/GSI. The
K+ meson multiplicity per nucleon is enhanced in Au+Au collisions by factors up
to 6 relative to C+C reactions whereas the corresponding pion ratio is reduced.
The ratio of the K+ meson excitation functions for Au+Au and C+C collisions
increases with decreasing beam energy. This behavior is expected for a soft
nuclear equation-of-state.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
Phase Decomposition and Chemical Inhomogeneity in Nd2-xCexCuO4
Extensive X-ray and neutron scattering experiments and additional
transmission electron microscopy results reveal the partial decomposition of
Nd2-xCexCuO4 (NCCO) in a low-oxygen-fugacity environment such as that typically
realized during the annealing process required to create a superconducting
state. Unlike a typical situation in which a disordered secondary phase results
in diffuse powder scattering, a serendipitous match between the in-plane
lattice constant of NCCO and the lattice constant of one of the decomposition
products, (Nd,Ce)2O3, causes the secondary phase to form an oriented,
quasi-two-dimensional epitaxial structure. Consequently, diffraction peaks from
the secondary phase appear at rational positions (H,K,0) in the reciprocal
space of NCCO. Additionally, because of neodymium paramagnetism, the
application of a magnetic field increases the low-temperature intensity
observed at these positions via neutron scattering. Such effects may mimic the
formation of a structural superlattice or the strengthening of
antiferromagnetic order of NCCO, but the intrinsic mechanism may be identified
through careful and systematic experimentation. For typical reduction
conditions, the (Nd,Ce)2O3 volume fraction is ~1%, and the secondary-phase
layers exhibit long-range order parallel to the NCCO CuO2 sheets and are 50-100
angstromsthick. The presence of the secondary phase should also be taken into
account in the analysis of other experiments on NCCO, such as transport
measurements.Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
New class of T-prime-structure cuprate superconductors
High-temperature superconductivity has been discovered in La2-xBaxCuO4 [1], a
compound that derives from the undoped La2CuO4 crystallizing in the perovskite
T-structure. In this structure oxygen octahedra surround the copper ions. It is
common knowledge that charge carriers induced by doping in such an undoped
antiferromagnetic Mott-insulator lead to high-temperature superconductivity [2-
4]. The undoped material La2CuO4 is also the basis of the electron-doped
cuprate superconductors [5] of the form La2-xCexCuO4+y [6,7] which however
crystallize in the so called T-prime-structure, i.e. without apical oxygen
above or below the copper ions of the CuO2-plane. It is well known that for
La2-xCexCuO4+y the undoped T-prime-structure parent compound cannot be prepared
due to the structural phase transition back into the T-structure occuring
around x ~ 0.05. Here, we report that if La is substituted by RE = Y, Lu, Sm,
Eu, Gd, or Tb, which have smaller ionic radii but have the same valence as La,
nominally undoped La2-xRExCuO4 can be synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy in
the T-prime-structure. The second important result is that all these new
T-prime-compounds are superconductors with fairly high critical temperatures up
to 21 K. For this new class of cuprates La2-xRExCuO4, which forms the
T-prime-parent compounds of the La-based electron doped cuprates, we have not
been able to obtain the Mott-insulating ground state for small x before the
structural phase transition into the T-structure takes place.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
