The norm-1-property of a quantum observable
A normalized positive operator measure has the
norm-1-property if \no{E(X)}=1 whenever . This property reflects
the fact that the measurement outcome probabilities for the values of such
observables can be made arbitrary close to one with suitable state
preparations. Some general implications of the norm-1-property are
investigated. As case studies, localization observables, phase observables, and

On the structure of covariant phase observables
We study the mathematical structure of covariant phase observables. Such an
observable can alternatively be expressed as a phase matrix, as a sequence of
unit vectors, as a sequence of phase states, or as an equivalent class of
covariant trace-preserving operations. Covariant generalized operator measures
are defined by structure matrices which form a W*-algebra with phase matrices
as its subset. The properties of the Radon-Nikodym derivatives of phase

Molecular Exploration of the First-Century Tomb of the Shroud in Akeldama, Jerusalem
The Tomb of the Shroud is a first-century C. E. tomb discovered in Akeldama, Jerusalem, Israel that had been illegally entered and looted. The investigation of this tomb by an interdisciplinary team of researchers began in 2000. More than twenty stone ossuaries for collecting human bones were found, along with textiles from a burial shroud, hair and skeletal remains. The research presented here focuses on genetic analysis of the bioarchaeological remains from the tomb using mitochondrial DNA to examine familial relationships of the individuals within the tomb and molecular screening for the presence of disease. There are three mitochondrial haplotypes shared between a number of the remains analyzed suggesting a possible family tomb. There were two pathogens genetically detected within the collection of osteological samples, these were Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae. The Tomb of the Shroud is one of very few examples of a preserved shrouded human burial and the only example of a plaster sealed loculus with remains genetically confirmed to have belonged to a shrouded male individual that suffered from tuberculosis and leprosy dating to the first-century C.E. This is the earliest case of leprosy with a confirmed date in which M. leprae DNA was detected
Integrating probe-level expression changes across generations of Affymetrix arrays
There is an urgent need for bioinformatic methods that allow integrative analysis of multiple microarray data sets. While previous studies have mainly concentrated on reproducibility of gene expression levels within or between different platforms, we propose a novel meta-analytic method that takes into account the vast amount of available probe-level information to combine the expression changes across different studies. We first show that the comparability of relative expression changes and the consistency of differentially expressed genes between different Affymetrix array generations can be considerably improved by determining the expression changes at the probe-level and by considering the latest information on probe-level sequence matching instead of the probe annotations provided by the manufacturer. With the improved probe-level expression change estimates, data from different generations of Affymetrix arrays can be combined more effectively. This will allow for the full exploitation of existing results when designing and analyzing new experiments
Neurocognitive Functions in 3- to 15-Year-Old Children : An International Comparison
Objectives: Performance on neurocognitive tasks develops with age, but it is still unknown whether this performance differs between children from different cultures. We compared cross-sectionally the development of neurocognitive functions in 3- to 15-year-old children from three countries: Finland, Italy, and the United States (N=2745). Methods: Language, face memory, emotion recognition, theory of mind, and visuospatial processing subtests from the NEPSY-II standardizations in Finland, Italy, and the United States were used to evaluate if children and adolescents from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds differ in performance on these measures. Results: We found significant differences in performance on the tasks between the countries. Generally, the differences were more pronounced in the younger age groups. Some subtests showed greater country effects than others, performance on these subtests being higher, in general, in one country over the others, or showed different patterns of age associated changes in test performance. Conclusions: Significant differences in neurocognitive performance between children from Finland, Italy, and the United States were found. These findings may be due to cultural or educational differences that impact test performance, or due to factors associated with the adaptation of measures from one culture to another. The finding of performance differences across countries on similar tasks indicate that cross-cultural and background variables impact performance on neuropsychological measures. Therefore, clinicians need to consider a child’s cultural background when evaluating performance on neuropsychological assessments. The results also indicate that future cross-cultural studies are needed to further examine the underlying cultural factors that influence neurocognitive performance. On the complementarity of the quadrature observables
In this paper we investigate the coupling properties of pairs of quadrature
observables, showing that, apart from the Weyl relation, they share the same
coupling properties as the position-momentum pair. In particular, they are
complementary. We determine the marginal observables of a covariant phase space
observable with respect to an arbitrary rotated reference frame, and observe
that these marginal observables are unsharp quadrature observables. The related
distributions constitute the Radon tranform of a phase space distribution of
the covariant phase space observable. Since the quadrature distributions are
the Radon transform of the Wigner function of a state, we also exhibit the
relation between the quadrature observables and the tomography observable, and
show how to construct the phase space observable from the quadrature
observables. Finally, we give a method to measure together with a single
